Maybe I'm just being a Debbie Downer (I usually am), but I can't imagine they'd have warned us 'hey we're changing things to not regular schedueld updates' as in, don't expect stuff, and then just release stuff the next month anyway.

I'm guessing it'll be a few months at least, maybe we'll see some more before Christmas.

Would have loved Nintendo to give me some more SNES games for my birthday (Oct) month though! :'(

How do we feel about the possibility of FF6 eventually making its way into the catalog? Or do we think Square might actually put in the effort to make a modern console port of it (adapted from mobile or not, lol)?

Between Earthbound and SMRPG, I'm leaning Earthbound happening first. I can't shake the feeling that Nintendo has some bigger plans for SMRPG up its sleeve.

Really hope Earthbound is added in the next update. I feel like replaying it. FF6 would be amazing as well as Chrono Trigger, but I dunno how third party games will be added. I just hope the update comes soon, I'm having so much fun with the SNES catalogue. The difference between it and the NES app is night and day, I barely touched the NES app but SNES is so good that I don't get why they didn't add it from the start.

Also hoping for the Japanese only Fire Emblem games so I can play FE4 on the big screen!

Shrug definitely feels like no October one, but I do expect an update in November for good marketing alongside Black Friday sales

Given that FF7/8/9 seemed to be pretty popular on Switch and other formats I think it is more likely that you'll see a similar release for 6 and some of the other titles at some point in the future.

I guess if the Mana collection does well they might even do a translation of FF5. Maybe wishful thinking.

I can see Square supporting the online service but I doubt it will be much in the way of stuff that people really want. You might see Mystic Quest or Secret of Evermore on there at some point.

Chrono Trigger seems to occupy a weird space where Square will release a mobile and steam port but don't see any value in releasing the same port on modern consoles.

Interestingly enough it looks like they updated the mobile port about a year ago to bring it in line with the fixes on the steam version. So this means one of the only current gen devices that you can buy a version of Chrono Trigger is the Apple TV. Madness.

For Chrono Trigger, I'm perfectly happy with the DS version.

As for FF5, didn't they already translate it? You know, the GBA version? It wouldn't be too hard to adapt that script for the limitations of the SNES version right?

It so is. The theme songs from the various casinos still play randomly in my brain sometimes.

The random people pick pocketing you and trying to sell you fake watches was kind of annoying though.

Except when you return the wallet and the owner puts it all on their lucky roulette number and wins. Then it's awesome.

PS1 too right? I don't know what that means for getting the SNES version done since a lot of the work in translating old games requires working within the constraints of the original rom or fixing it to allow longer character strings for text.

I would be happy with them selling the RPGe translation, as long as they could agree it with the original authors and pay them an honest sum for it.

Playing Kirby's Dream Land 3 and it's a fun game but like, what is this heart star mechanic? Seems like such artificial padding making you replay levels until you figure out what the fuck the game actually wants you to do. Like it'd be fine for optional collectibles but it's literally to unlock the final boss.

It's easier if you know the pattern for each world:

1st = Help flowers
2nd = Use specific ability to fulfill objective (may require animal buddy)
3rd = Mini-game
4th = Fetch quest
5th = Bring corresponding animal buddy to end of stage
6th = Either collect multiple things (odd-numbered world) or reproduce a star block pattern (even-numbered world)

If you know this ahead of time it can significantly reduce backtracking.

Yeah I've figured out some of these things but am still left clueless.

Like I went through world 4 yesterday. The flower in 4-1 is red at the end of the level, and the stage has black flowers in it, I avoided all the flowers, no heart star, I rewinded and crushed all the flowers, no heart star. ???

And then on 4-6, there was a little dude sitting on a single block, and then a room full of blocks, so I figured oh I have to destroy all the blocks but that single one he was sitting on (which is the one right above the door, so basically the easiest to hit). Nope, no heart star.

I'll give you a hint for both.

4-1: The flowers are not actually black. You need to help restore them.

4-6: Look around for a particular star block pattern you can copy. Additionally, you can also derive the pattern from the NPC itself.

You also don't need to go to the end of the stage to see if you got the heart. You'll hear a jingle once you fulfill the condition for it.

Ok so we went through October with no updates. Will November yield the same results?

Finally, I am able to play Super Metroid and ALTTP on a proper console, and I gotta say, kind of a mixed bag. Super was really good, like I think it's one of my favorite games now, but ALTTP was not as great as I had expected it to be. Far too obtuse in some areas.

I'm not too bummed yet since I still want to play Breath of Fire and Yoshi's Island, but it really hurts that they aren't talking at all about adding more content.

I finally got to play SMW2: Yoshi's Island and it was a pleasure with the wireless SNES controller. I had a Genesis and also didn't play a ton of games in the early to mid 90s.

Some thoughts:

- It lives up to they hype. This game screams CREATIVITY. This is the mario team at the height of their powers fully unleashed with a new artstyle and new gameplay ideas. I smiled so much and was astounded at times by the level design and all the little gameplay ideas.

- The bosses are fantastically creative. So much better to me than most 2D Mario games. The frog's stomach and the penguin on the planet.....all of them were so creative. Only complaint is I really couldn't figure out the aiming and distance on final boss.

- It's just beautiful, the art style and world still look amazing today.

- I found the difficultly to be just about right, but I did take advantage of the app's ability to create save spots anywhere (but did not use rewind), which I'm sure made it easier for me. It's actually pretty jarring to see how much better Yoshi can be though with more advanced difficulty. Its a bit of a shame that they've limited the franchise since Yoshi's story to more of a novice/child difficultly level. It was actually surprising to me how far and few mid point save rings there actually are. This sucker could get really tough if you were going for 100%.

- In some ways I see this as a precursor to Mario 64, because here is a 2D style game in the Mario world with an emphasis on all these collectibles and slower exploration of the worlds. And there is even influence for galaxy here with that penguin boss fight.

A few questions for those that played the game contemporaneously:

- Were people upset that SMW2 was a Yoshi game and not a Mario game? Looking at it to me I think they made the right decision, because SMW was pretty much perfection for Mario and they had done 3 on the NES and had the all stars release. This was something entirely new, but the quality and pedigree were still there, so it gave the SNES another killer app platformer very different from Mario. I'm guessing there was some disappointment/outrage at first until people played it.

- How hard was the game considered back then? I don't consider myself great, but I platinumed Bloodborne and Sekiro earlier this year, so I can handle difficulty. I made it easier for myself by creating extra saves, but again I was really surprised at how long it took to get to save spots. I guess its easier if you are just running through, but I tried to get as high a score and collectibles as a I could, so I put myself at risk rather than taking the safer path.

For what it's worth, there's actually a hack that brings the GBA script into the SNES version. I'd be completely happy with Square licensing this from the hacker, or working with them. If a company like M2 was involved I could see that definitely happening.

Personally I prefered a few games more regularly than 'bulk' updates or whatever they're planning now. I'm more likely to try out a game further/put more time into ones I wouldn't normally when it's one of just a handful given that month compared to lumping 15 games at once every half year or whatever.

I do think we'll get some new Snes games in November. Despite how people like to barrage them, they do market and they aren't going to go too long without something new to NSO or updating the Snes app and right before Black Friday and the holidays is the perfect time for some marketing fuel. Also they know the longer they wait the bigger people expect the update to be

In yoshis island do you need all the red coins, all the flowers, or all the stars to unlock the special level? Or do you need all 3?

I'm expecting one close to Christmas to be this year's only other update. Knowing Nintendo, it'll probably be for the NES Online service, and it'll be everyone's favorite game:

Urban Champion.
You are definitely a time traveller from the future, because I am one too and can confirm this is the event that starts the end times.

What's interesting is there is code for mouse support in the app which the SNES version of Canoe (the internal name of this SNES emulator) didn't have, plus some new PresetIDs which very likely are for Mario Paint and Mario & Wario.
