So apparently there are a lot of Discord groups on Era I didn't know about

I always see the word "discord link" thrown around in various corners of the internet. While I do have an account, It was only ever used for communicating with friends, and even then, I almost ever used it. These mystical discords that I hear others refer to, about how they talked in them, I found my mind just glaze over as I read, because I didn't really "get it". Payed it no mind, probably just small groups of friends who use Era. Why should I, I'm not close friends with anyone.

Except I found myself wandering into the Animal Crossing discord yesterday, and it was like a light bulb turning on in my head.
It was pretty huge and involved, if not very active when I am active, due to timezones.
A bit of searching later, and apparently a lot of OTs have their own discord.

Is this all like some secret underside of Era?
Is there where y'all hide from me?

I feel like traditional forums are suffering from the influence of the way people are used to communicate on Reddit, Twitter, and other social media platforms. If a question is asked on resetera, the first 20 replies are mostly the same answer. I used to moderate a forum and I always deleted those double-y answers, it doesn't add anything to the convo. It makes a forum look cluttered and it leaves less room for discussion.

Before discord there was the dark ages. Of Teamspeak, Ventrilo and Raidcall. They worked for our communities. I had a great time with the guy at United Operations playing Arma back in the day. But discord is everything. The only thing I could say could improve it would be text/call connection for my phone. Like Razer comms had.

I still think Reddit is the best format. It has the permanence of messages that discord lacks while also have the organization of forum threads while adding structure on top of them with nested comments.

I am starting to use Discord a bit more but still prefer the forum style over it.

I always found the relationship between Discord and reddit/forums interesting.

Whenever I see the requests in communities for a Discord it seems to frequently kill the origin point for the community in favor of Discord.

Yeah I mostly don't get that part of it. The discord I am using is for MinnMax which is the only community spot for them.

Welcome to the joys of Discord. I recently had to cut back on some servers, I had so many notifications and chats to follow it was becoming unwieldy (sadly a few Era servers didn't survive the culling).

Speaking of AC, if you're in the market for an extremely busy Animal Crossing New Horizons Discord that will have various trade channels, the Discord-partnered one is great.

Discord serves are great places for communities to gather in real-time to chat, group up for games, and sometimes have somewhere private to discuss things.

I'm glad the mods don't do this here...

Yeah Era has a lot of Discords which i really like tbh. I enjoy posting on Era and still actively read it for the latest gaming news but on Era Discords I feel like i can be honest without having the fear of somehow get warned/banned. This I really like.

I always think about asking for a link for some threads, but I don't have anything worth while to add.

I've been trying to get my group on Discord instead of the awful Playstation Messenger app for years and it's been a total failure. We're an older group (30s to 40s) so I guess trying some new app is a big ask.

Kinda weird how people are seemingly proud to not know what Discord is, when all it is is a chat program that is incredibly useful and straightforward.

It’s replaced forums and all social media for me. I chat with my brothers and friends pretty much exclusively through it. Only people like other family or high school buddies are the ones I don’t communicate with through Discord. Even my 58 year old mother is on it, lul.

Only thing I haven't figured out on discord is how to read messages where I last left off. Everytime I enter a room, it's at the latest message and i can miss like hundreds of previous messages and scrolling back all the way sucks. Anyone know? My google fu (and discord support search) is failing me. That's one thing i like about the Era software, "jump to new" puts me right where i left off but I know it's sorta apples and oranges between forums and chat channels

same - Lego era for example seems way less active on the forum and has moved to discord a lot. Not really sure why - the kinda of discussions happening would suit a forum just fine. I think it can have a clearly detrimental effect to the kinda of lower activity community threads here

I find Discord tends to be better for discussion around more centralized subjects while forums like ERA work better for more general topics.

was in a few but didn't really like it, it felt a bit insular.
On a forum you pick up the occasional interesting waif and stray instead of a dozen people going around in circles.

Tap the blue notice that informs you of old messages (at least, this is how you do it on Android).

So...
I'm gonna stick around the AC one so I have a community to play NH with.
But is there any reason for me to want to enter other ones?
I tend to not hang around OTs in Hangouts, as they all tend to be quite slow, and I'm not sure a lot of discord groups would be a lot better. Are there any OTs with a super active discord but a dead Era thread? What are the best ones?

...Are there any super secret discords with no thread?

I've joined a few (Asexual, Nintendo, Mental Health, etc) but I'm such a social fuck-up that I don't even know how to start actually participating in them. It feels like they all have these well-established and tight-knit communities and any post I make feels like an unwanted intrusion.

I really should join up to some more, only on the Destiny one atm. Took me a while to feel comfortable using it, which is weird since I was massively active with multiple IRC channels way back when, and Discord is literally just a modern version of that (some of the old commands even work with it).

On reddit you can't really converse in the classic sense like you can on a regular forum or in a chat room. So that makes sense to me.

I much prefer era over a server with tons of people spamming chat like it's twitch stream though.
