And when I got there the topic was girls and shit. I thought okay whatever, I wanted to talk shit on my barber who's a fucking Sacramento Kings fan in LA but that's neither here nor there so whatever lmao. Then they started talking about what their girls wear and whatnot. Coincidentally, one guy's girl just called him because she got groped at worked by a customer which caused a big scene. This motherfucker, however, decides that he thinks his girl shouldn't be going out to work in tight/attractive clothing because it just shows that they want attention. At this point I thought dude was wayyyyy outta line but the other guys around me agreed to this shit.

One barber even went and talked about how his girl wanted to get a boob job done, but felt that it was unnecessary because he didn't want it and thought his girl just wanted more attention. I shit you not he said "if you get touched on by a guy, I ain't doin shit because you wanted this attention." He kept going on about some bullshit like he could give her the attention behind closed doors and she shouldn't be goin out in public like that.

I was fucking astonished that people still think this way, at least publicly. I think it's because I've been surrounded in a bubble where people would knock this shit down from the first sentence. I felt like I really should've said more than "no one should grope or come on to a girl unless it's consensual, because they're not asking for it unless they're in their right mind and explicitly ask for it," but idk why I didn't .

TLDR: dudes still think women are asking for it if they wear attractive/tight clothing smh

Barber shops are home to hot sports takes, misogyny, transphobia, and generally are just pretty scummy.

Don't be surprised.

Me and my barber talk about vacation, sport events and everyday shit or just do our thing in silence.

You probably did good not disagreeing too much with the man with your future haircut in his hands...

You said enough imo, I doubt the forum was ripe for minds being changed anyway.

My barber talks about mafia conspiracy theories and sports. Most of the time we just watch sports highlights.

Man, OP, please tell me you at least said something after the cut was over? Or did you just walk out of there without saying a word...?

My barber just plays music and says no when I ask for them to brush me longer. That brush is fucking crack.

But yeah, it's not a safe zone in any way. All I can take comfort in knowing is they wouldn't say that shit 10 feet away from the shop. And even then, I try not to frequent places like that.

Sounds like some real "man's man" shit lol, people like this usually just talk a big game around there bros for fun, don't think about it to hard, and for the love of god don't and I mean don't try to fucking #educate them, it's fine if you disagree or don't want to contribute to there bs but real life isn't Twitter, don't be that guy.

lmao this dude's been cutting my hair since I was 11, I'd be crushed and would probably feel like a betrayal

Was this a barbershop in the hood or even kinda ghetto? Those always have bullshit going as someone who has always gone to them (because they never fuck my shit up like cheap suburban places do). Weed, bootleg movies, whistling at women, people talking shit to each other, etc.

I mean.. not really but back in the day when my barber first started out yeah I guess it was a hole in the wall shop. He did well enough to move to a more "suburban" place and I just followed him bc he never fucked my shit up.

Got a cowworker who wouldn't be caught dead in a salon. When I told him I get my hair cut in a salon he looked at me like there was something wrong with me because salons are for girls and girls are icky unless you're having sex with them.

Dude has some backwards views on women and other social issues.

My hair stylist is cool. She's into rock music.

Yeah, that's why I just go to a salon if I need something done. I may not have much to talk about with the women, but at least they're nice to me and seem pretty chill.

I go to a hair salon so all the hair cutting people are girls. All I know are hair salons. I’ve never understood the point of a barber shop. From what I’ve seen on TV it’s essentially a place to hang out and occasionally hair also gets cut. When I go to my hair salon all the girls know how I like it cut. I just sit down and tell them that I want it the usual way. That’s pretty much the extent of the conversation. Why are y’all talking to strangers about anything?

You can go to a salon that is 100% female staffed and still have random conversations with them. You're making it sound like speaking to humans in these scenarios is abnormal.

Once I stepped my shit up and learned to maintain my own sharp ass lining and how to properly care for my blades I saved too much money not going to my barber anymore. But yeah, they were similar with some of the toxic discussions thinking back on it.

Get yourself a mirror kit and some good tools and start saving yourself time and money man. Not to mention you can be sharp as fuck every day when you cut your own hair. Nothing like having the fresh cut look everyday instead of just 5 days after a cut.

I go to a barber owned by 5 Syrian refugees and all of the discussion is around what would be best for my hair and any extras I might want (face waxing, beard trim, line up). No pointless chit chat.

My favourite place to get a cut and I've been through Salon's, Hairdressers and Barbers.

I work in a male dominated job and, yeah. Racist jokes, misogynistic/macho small talk, and sports makes up like 80% of the dialogue. I don’t usually find it worth my time to interact with most of them.

I want them to focus on my hair. I have no reason to distract them when they are using sharp objects around my head and face. I've been going to my current place for around 10 years and I couldn't tell you the name of any of the girls that are currently working there or have worked there. Strangely enough I just got my hair cut this Saturday and as I was about to leave I noticed a large TV that was not visible from the waiting area. I asked the girl, "How long as that been there?" She told me, "You're not going crazy, we just got that TV recently and the walls are a slightly different color now." That was the extent of our chat and it happened after the cut. I didn't go on to ask what she thought of the chaos surrounding the Trump administration.

This. My barber is incredibly ignorant and often makes misogynistic and xenophobic remarks.

But if you mention that's bogus halfway through a haircut you risk a very bad haircut.

Nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying that in situations like a haircut, taxi ride, etc. it's not abnormal to talk to the person. They are "strangers" but it's not like walking up to someone totally randomly and trying to talk. Lots of people feel the same way you do and dislike those conversations, just saying that them occurring isn't strange.

Uber drivers usually talk to me and so I'll talk back to them because it's understood that it's part of securing the 5 star rating. It's usually when I'm at an anime convention so the'll ask why all the people are dressed up. People at the hair salon talk among themselves and the most that's asked of me is an occasional head nod on the rare occasion that they want to hear my confirmation of what they are currently discussing.
