So what is up with the recent flood of anti-enthusiasm topics around here?

I'm constantly seeing topics along the lines of:

"Am I the only one who didn't like..."
"When does [game] get good, I'm about to quit"
"I don't care if I finish this game anymore"
"I don't want to buy [console]"

etc.

And I see posts like:

"Looks good, will wait until it's $10"
"I don't have time for these big games anymore"

My question for these folks is........why....are you.....here?

I thought this was a forum for gaming enthusiasts. I don't know what type of discussion or reaction you're trying to get out of gaming enthusiasts on a gaming enthusiast forum. So........why are you posting that?

Go outside. Go read a book or watch Netflix. Take a break from video games from a while. Trying to garner empathy or have others join in on your lack of passion, on a forum dedicated to said activity seems really.....well, dumb. At best you're venting to a non-receptive audience. At worst you're dampening other people's enjoyment of the medium.

So just keep it to yourself maybe?

I feel like this has always been the case for these kind of online forums.

Folks are gonna flood in with "WELL THAT'S JUST ERA LOL", but it was like this in the old site too. Negativity garners more discussion and controversy, for better or worse.

enthusiasts can be non enthused with a particular thing in the hobby/medium

once in a awhile you have posters who serially piss in every bowl of cheerios but that's handled with

What makes you think this is in anyway a recent phenomenon?

Why would your liking a game be more valid than someone else not liking it?

So basically if you don’t like something leave if you like it stay

sounds a lot like our political climate

It's not the job of the consumer to be perpetually enthused by products.

Great topic. I ask myself the same question. It could be a number of things tbh. Bots/marketting trying to persuade a big audience like ERA one way or the other. Simple console wars. Or just salty/sad gamers.
I don't think there is a place for it, at all.

I'm all for criticism, it often leads to development and improvements.
But topics like the ones you listed as examples in the OP - which are ALWAYS posted here - don't add anything productive.

It takes more effort to be mad than it does to be happy ;)

Why should anyone be required to feel excited about a product? What's wrong with waiting for a game to reach a price point that you value it at?

I think "hype check" threads and "Day 0" culture are way more problematic.

Playing devil's advocate against a popular game or talking about what you don't like rather than what you do is the easiest way to get attention on a message board.

I don't feel like I fall into most of these categories of posters, but I like games, but I also have to live within some kind of financial means, which means I'm not going to buy every game brand new at full price. I don't disparage people for doing so, but to say that I'm somehow less "enthusiastic" about games than you are because I can't spend every dollar I make on video games is pretty fucking condescending. Actually if anything, waiting for games to be cheaper means I can play more games, which makes me more of an enthusiast than you are...so how about that? What are you even doing here?

The idea of going into a hobbyist forum, and trying to convince others that thing they like is bad and they should feel bad for liking it.
People wanna share their opinions and want to find common ground on said opinions. That's what you do in a community, find common ground.

And lol at getting upset at people wanting to wait for games to be cheaper so they can buy em.

huh, what's wrong with waiting until games are cheap?

in addition i think there's such a thing as being too cynical (i am like this often) but i think that's preferable to being generally uncritical

It would be nice if some people could dislike stuff without implying people who do like it are stupid/brainwashed/uncultured/whatever.

You know, for a change.

I think you're conflating enthusiast forum with everyone having to be enthusiastic about every game.

The only time I don't like it is when it's really obvious they're only saying it to troll those who have a more positive attitude towards whatever the subject is.

WHICH IS ALL THE FUCKING TIME >=|

Have you been to other “hobbyist forums”? I’m genuinely asking because those places are by far the most toxic and miserable. You can’t compare these to era. On the contrary, those “positive” gaming reddits consist of 99% memes/humor which is pointless - maybe it’s because I dislike memes...

Anyway, people generally like to complain. I personally don’t need to hear absolute statements about why game XYZ “sucks” or is “overrated”. So I tend to block these overly negative users and so should you. :P

The "When does _____ get good?" thread are shitty but the rest of those comments are fine. Especially the ones related to money and time.

You’re on an enthusiast forum. That doesn’t necessarily mean everybody is gonna be all 😍 to every single game that is announced, released, reviewed, etc.

Hell, this place has wild opinions sometimes, but I love it here because are so open to being critical of games, no matter how beloved or popular. This place can have an echo effect depending on the game or the publisher, but I appreciate the harsh criticism when it shows up. I love that people think that The Outer Worlds and Three Houses are trash while I enjoyed them both. I love that people tell me why they strongly disliked them. Give me variety in life, baby. Make me annoyed, oppose me, prove me wrong. If everybody here was sunny and cheery and happy-go-lucky about everything in the industry it’d be boring as fuck. If I want that I’ll go repeat positive affirmations in the mirror.

There seems to be a performative element to some of it. Like, if you don't like open world games and some series you love transitions to open world, sure, I get complaining then. But you'll also see it in like, the third game in an open world series like say Watch Dogs 3. Nobody cares if you don't have time for 40 hours non linear adventures in those threads my guy.

I am okay with being anti-enthusiasm and negativity. The biggest fans are the ones that critique the most because they want things to improve.

You can look for sunny sunny happiness and conformity elsewhere.

People like to hear themselves talk. Making threads are no different. Why keep your dislike to yourself if you can make people hear it? Same everywhere. People love to talk about themselves. I've made zero threads so I know what I am talking about :D

Thanks for making this topic, OP. I agree - this forum has become so relentlessly negative over the past year for some reason. Is it because we're all losing faith in humanity or what? Either way I hate it, thanks.

You make it sound like there isn't a new hype, rumor, or X is actually great thread every other day.
Being enthusiasts doesn't mean being hype machines. What a dumb premise. But yeah, don't be critical. Just consume product and then get excited for next products. Don't like reading people not getting hype? Use the ignore (thread) button. Simple.

My heroes are dead and my enemies are in power, what do you want from me? And again, this environment is hardly a recent phenomenon nor is it exclusive to ERA itself.

Ongoing to say a lot of crowd on here came over from gaf and most of us are older now.

It's no joke that the older many people get the more miserable they get.

I know, OP.

ResetEra comes off as one of the most negative places on the internet at times.

Just find one of the few peppered threads that resonates with you and partake in the conversation.

And hope it lasts before you run into your next hyperbole filled post or thread.

Breeds naivety in the customer audience and opens the vulnerability to be abused. There's value in critique, and environment without criticism isn't conductive for wanting progress/change in the gaming industry.
thank you, this is good and succinct

Criticism is massively important, and to go so far as to ask people to not even make their own threads about their critiques of games is especially egregious to me.

Voicing negativity is a form of entertainment.

For reference, please see the internet.

It wasn't like that in 2017 or early 2018, closer to when this forum was founded.

But since then hottakes and negativity - it just sells the most. Jim Sterling even more or less outed himself on that.
