Might as well write out my take on the coup here, as a Venezuelan:
-No fucking way this isn't US-backed.
-No fucking way Maduro didn't need to go.
-Guaido will have to work to be worse than Maduro was.
-Paramilitaries were already around as of years ago. They were not CIA-backed; they were fixers for Maduro and his cronies.
-In the short term, it'd require significant effort to make things worse for the average Venezuelan if it succeeds. In the long term Venezuela may forfeit its economic future, but that was already the case under Maduro.
-If it fails, I'm concerned about the level of violence Maduro will enact in retribution and what pretext that might give for direct intervention instead of US backing. Maduro's been pretty smart about keeping himself alive though, so the the hope in that scenario is he just does goddamn nothing.
That might not mean much in the end though.
If you wanna believe I'm COINTELPRO for thinking that, go for it. I can't stop you. But the last goddamn thing you should do as a Socialist is support Maduro.
