Verso has some free socialist ebooks for download for anyone affected by Corona - all the books are actually very good and must reads for folks here:
  • Yesterday's Man by Branko Marcetic (The big-money politics that shaped Joe Biden's career. At its core, though, it tells the essential story of how the Democratic Party became a tool of the ruling class.)
  • A Planet to Win by Kate Aronoff, Alyssa Battistoni, et al. ( explores the political potential and concrete first steps of a Green New Deal..)
  • The Case for the Green New Deal by Ann Pettifor (What is the Green New Deal and how can we afford it?)
  • Four Futures by Peter Frase ( An exhilarating exploration into the utopias and dystopias that could develop from present society. )
  • The Old Is Dying and the New Cannot Be Born by Nancy Fraser (Neoliberalism is fracturing, but what will emerge in its wake?)
  • Feminism for the 99% by Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharya, et al. (Taking as its inspiration the new wave of feminist militancy that has erupted globally, this manifesto makes a simple but powerful case: It must focus on those at the bottom, and fight for the world they deserve. And that means targeting capitalism. Feminism must be anticapitalist, eco-socialist and antiracist.)

Free Quarantine Ebooks

The current global crisis has revealed (once again) that neoliberal capitalism is not sustainable. But what lies in its wake? What might a post-capitalist world look like? In this time of quarantine, we have 80% off all our ebooks, and 40% off all our print books. See here for more detail. You...

The thread in OT got me curious, does anyone know of any writing thats about the intersection of socialism and AI beyond the whole space communism thing? I wanna learn about the cyber proletariat.

When you say "beyond space communism", have you read Bastani's book? There is also 'Future Histories' by Lizzie O'Shea that is very interesting, also 'Inventing the Future' by Srnicek and Williams

Thanks for the heads up Rupetta. I've been keen on reading the Biden book since reading a preview on Jacobin. The other books also look very interesting.

Every day I wake up thinking "We're in the prime scenario to push for M4A, worker control, mass redistribution/UBI, breaking capital's stranglehold, providing jobs for everyone through the GND and other programs for the inevitable oncoming depression, but the Democrats picked Joe Biden lol"

This isn't quite what you're looking for, but I had linked to some pieces about socialism and technology a while back: https://www.resetera.com/threads/socialism-ot-the-dawn-of-a-red-era.585/page-178#post-28332052

Donald Trump losing his mind and wanting businesses to re-open, I guess he's afraid of mass dissent. Of course we're not going to see anything come from it though and everything will probably just go back to how it was before.

The capitalist class is in his ear about just forcing people to work or starve and figuring it out later.

He's not the only one using this kind of logic

In fact trump is helping the cause more then people realize by making the real ghouls seem more reasonable

He will have the best healthcare in the world in case if he got it. What's a few million human sacrifices to capital to him?

Just a reminder for incoming Thursday - Jacobin is launching their new video series on Thursday 6 pm eastern, where 1 prominent socialist thinker explains 1 idea in 20 minutes and where they take Q&As at the end. First out is Mike Davis, an excellent author/activist /LA historian / trucker who everyone here should familiarize themselves with ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Davis_(scholar) ) on corona and its political implications:

Jacobin

Jacobin is a leading voice of the American left, offering socialist perspectives on politics, economics, and culture. The print magazine is released quarterl...

If you are not familiar with Mike Davis I'd suggest the highly entertaining 1997 article "The American Earthquake
Mike Davis and the Politics of Disaster" on his work/life: http://linguafranca.mirror.theinfo.org/9709/davis.html

Think I need to put a self-imposed restriction on reading and posting in election threads going forward. I'm completely unable to relate to many liberals/moderates in their worldviews and if I really let loose I'll reveal the accelerationist deep inside me.

Such as it matters when this country is staring down a pandemic and we're not even certain there will be an election this year.

In more positive news...

Hi comrades, I've been lurking this thread for a while so thanks for the good conversations and recommendations you are having here.

In more positive news...

I'm seeing similar "nationalizations" in many countries and I'm worried. I'm sure that the hospitals will return to their owners after the pandemic, but even worse the owners will send the bill back to the government - and it ain't gonna be a fair bill. Does anyone have the actual official decision from the government somewhere?

In Greece, where I know the situation better, the government uses the word "requisition" instead of nationalization and owners of ICUs are getting paid double (Greek source: https://www.efsyn.gr/politiki/antip...-panakriba-tin-epitaxi-ton-meth-ston-idiotiko) for them by the Greek government. Had I a hospital in Greece I would wish this pandemic never ended...

Of course not every country is like Greece, but every country with capitalism has capitalism. If people are not ready or nothing changes, any (ridiculous, in general) monetary relief that is offered during this crisis to the poor is going to be paid back with big interest next year.

What do you know, Joe Biden, the man who clearly has made unwanted contact with others, is also possibly a sexual abuser! Not that it's really shocking I guess, Bill Clinton was one of their presidents, after all.

Yeah like not only is the hilarity of not planning on a pandemic completely lost on him but he does have emergency funds and partially doesnt wanna spend it because using it for essential stuff isn't fun :((((

New Trillbilly Worker's Party podcast about a range of subjects. They start with the stimulus package. I've not had time to keep up with happenings, but it sounds like a real pile of shit.

Man, I just said I was going to try to avoid election talk, but 2020 is really trying my patience.

And it's not even April!

The fucked up part is if Biden withdrew, the DNC will still refuse to give the nom to the other guy who's still in the race!
But okay, watch as Biden secures the nomination. Trump will bring up the rape case and media outlets will blast it 10x as hard.
The GOP is drooling for a Biden win and I can't understand why no one sees that.

I said the same but sometimes I just can't help myself

First time poster here. I am reading The Conquest of Bread because starting with Marx felt trite. Any suggestions for what I should read next?

edit: Jesus, he just told how Michael Sorkin, the leftwing NY arcitect(ual) critic has died of Covid... https://archinect.com/news/article/...educator-critic-has-passed-away-from-covid-19

You should look up his work on re-framing Gaza as a city state (Open Gaza)...
