Solo is a good non starwars movie. I'm saying this as someone who hasn't seen anything but the prequels.

My only issue is that it condensed Han's "biggest feats" into like a week:

Meeting Chewie
Meeting Lando
Falcon
Kessel Run

Too quick!

It's probably the best Disney Star Wars.

I think its easily the second worse movie in the series just ahead of Clones.

This. It astounds me that people go to bat for this by-the-numbers slog. I was ready to leave by the end of the Kessel Run. Just a wet noodle of a story. They should have let Lord & Miller do whatever crazy shit they were trying to do. I guess they can be consoled by the fucking Oscar they won for doing crazy shit with Spider-Man instead.

It's probably the best Disney Star Wars.

Like what the hell is this? Do people just want strict by-rote unimaginative regurgitation like Solo to be the Star Wars brand? Is that it? Is there a type of fan who just wants this boring crap over and over again? I mean Rogue One has a lot of the same problems as Solo but Rogue One ends with 30 minutes of Star Wars ship battle porn while Solo ends with three people, one of whom's name I can't even remember, arguing in an office. A big finish can go a long way toward mitigating two acts of meandering characterless nothing.

I liked Rogue One more than SOLO. Fight me.

Loved Solo.

Friend of mine and I have a running joke based on Forrest Gump:

"Hey, Darth Maul, you got new legs!"
"Yep, they're made from the same material as the Death Star."

I thoroughly enjoyed it aside from the explanation of how he acquired the name "Solo", which was fucking ridiculous.

"Explaining" why Han Solo's last name was Solo is inarguably the most egregious sin in the history of film making, and I will hear no claims to the contrary. In my memory the entire film is just a dial tone interrupted by that one line.

Yep. I watched all the new Star wars and I tried to make them happen, then transitioned to understanding they were just total garbage. Then I watched Solo cus I wanted to see a high budget movie on my new TV. Ended up really enjoying it! Tons of fun and cool action scenes and plot, of course, dont expect shakespeare, but it's much closer to the spirit and quality of the original Star Wars films and IMO a good film in it's own right.

It was a fun movie and I liked it. I could have done without some explanations ("Solo") but overall it was better than I was expecting it to be.

I watched it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I kind of felt bored. Not exactly sure why though

It's probably the best Disney Star Wars.
Force Awakens and Last Jedi also combined a ton of huge stuff into one week.

Finn leaves the First Order
Rey leaves Jakku
Rey takes the Millennium Falcon and meets Han Solo
Han and Leia reunite
Rey gets the Skywalker lightsaber
Starkiller base destroys the New Republic
The Resistance destroys Starkiller
Kylo Ren kills Han Solo
Rey fights Kylo in a lightsaber duel
Rey finds Luke
Rey confronts Kylo Ren for a second time and confronts Snoke
Kylo Ren kills Snoke and becomes leader of the First Order
Most of the Resistance is destroyed
Luke comes out of hiding kind of to sacrifice himself and fight Kylo Ren

It's decent, hell of a lot better than Rogue One. I hated Rogue One.

Absolutely loved Solo. It's probably my favorite of the Disney Star Wars films, thus far.

I know people took issue with young Han but I thought he was great. Is he a spitting image of the OT Han? Not really but I don't think it matters if you're just looking to kick back and have a good time.

Other positives - the cast is fantastic, most of the humor lands ("not if you round down, buddy"), several exceptional set pieces (train heist, maelstrom, Kessel Run), and the Crimson Dawn/Maul reveal begs for a series of it's own.

I mean, I get why it wasn't successful but that doesn't mean it's not a great space adventure, IMO.

Yeah, really fun movie for sure.

Only thing I really didn't like was

Darth fucking Maul? Seriously? Give me a break.

and maybe the female droid... but the rest was good stuff.

Man, to me this movie was the definition of mediocre. In fact, glad it made disney realise to give SW more of a break.

For those peeps that liked this, do you dislike the new movies (new trilogy to be)

It's a passable half-watch. That's about the best I can give it. Nearly everything iconic about Han Solo was apparently bestowed upon him within like 3 days? His ship, the Kessel run, his pistol, him shooting first, the life debt with Chewie. I'm amazed he didn't find some blue pants with a red stripe on the side. I was really looking forward to that explanation. I guess they were saving something for a sequel.

Oh, but not everything happens during then. Let's not forget his name was dispassionately assigned to him by a fucking TSA agent. Also Han Solo helps start the rebellion. Great....

It's real fucking stupid.

Was the reveal of cool-armor girl supposed to mean something? Was the twist that she was a girl? Are we still at that point? I thought it was supposed to be Woody Harrelson's daughter, but nope... it's a girl and I am shocked...

It's a fucking lazy hackjob devoid of much personality.

That's nothing compared to Luke and Rey's journeys in the first movies of their trilogies.

No? Because there is plenty iconic about Luke that isn't from A New Hope, and we have yet to see what the real climax of Rey's journey.

But apparently the only thing that happened to Han between Solo and A New Hope is that he wore a vest and got a haircut.

so i just got done watching it, i thought as a han original story it was pretty distracting/weak,

but as just a simple star wars story i thought it was decent enough, i thought the pacing was really good and yea it was fun, woody harrelson's character is more interesting than i thought he would be

far better action/adventure scenes than anything that was in TLJ imo

In just the span of a few days to a week Rey:
  • Left Jakku after being there for over a decade
  • Met Finn
  • Got the Millennium Falcon
  • Met Han Solo who became like a father to her
  • Met Kylo Ren
  • Got the Skywalker lightsaber
  • Fought Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel
  • Met Leia
  • Found Luke Skywalker and kind of trained with him
  • Confronted Kylo a second time and Snoke
  • Became the last of the Jedi

Yeah, over the course of two movies.

Are you telling me nothing of substance happened to Han Solo between Solo and ANH? We needed an explanation for everything he references in his life, including his gun?

Solo was one of the best star wars movies, but i might be the oddball to think it was better than all of the star wars films except empire strikes back. IMHO the main reason it failed was because it came out 5 short months after TLJ, and people were still pissed about it. (I know i was thats why i didnt see it in theaters)

I totally agree actually. I went in with low expectations and enjoyed Solo a lot. It's a lot of fun and I felt entertained throughout.

I agree, the origins of the memorable elements of Han as a character in the movie were by and large pretty lame, but I personally didn't mind the juxtaposition of weird armor marauder dude turning out to be girl freedom fighter. But again, my expectations for this movie going into it were in the absolute toilet, so maybe I was just easily amused.

Eh, decent but far from the best of the new era I think . The Last Jedi remains the best film in the series since Empire Strikes Back.

TFA was waaaaaaaaaaay better

But it's probably my second favorite of the disney era, yeah. nothing crazy but hits all the right notes and it's just a fun star warsy adventure.

Was more bored watching it than in the worst marvel movie. I didn't even finish it. The concept is just so boring and uninspiring + what they did with it was just uuuuuurgh. Donald Glover as Lando was pretty enjoyable though. One day we'll get star wars movies that actually expand the universe in meaningful ways.
