it would be extremely embarrassing if hackers managed to fix it, like improve on the performance issues.
well, it already is

PlayStation Classic has a public key, is that for real? This is like a joke level of PS3 hack back in 2011....
dims

The fact that happened still astounds me

Yesterday people were posting that buying a PS Classic for hacking was silly because it wasn't going to be busted open like this...

People saying that on, literally, Day 2 was really dumb. Like, the NES Classic took 59 days to hack. Have some patience y'all.

It's happened before.

The author of the emulator for Sega's Smash Pack on the Dreamcast officially leaked info to Echelon, the piracy group that cracked dreamcast games, so they could rip the emulator and release it online. Since Dreamcast games can't be read in normal CDRom Drives, it's not too obvious, but if you network a dreamcast to a PC and browse the disc, you'll find a file called Echelon.txt in the root. Inside is the following:

The final line which says "Respect uncle sonic" is why the Echelon release notes for the Genesis emulator says this:

...but yes, I don't believe Sony did this purposefully lol.

I remember being in highschool home sick for a week with a bad flu and playing Phantasy Star IV for the first time ever on said Genesis emulator on Dreamcast. Magical times.

Well, part of the classic PS1 experience for many was how easy it was to hack and mod... so I guess this is replicating that too :-)

Yeah I seriously doubt that.
........they literally left the fkn key under the door mat. They threw you 16gb... like, let's be honest, no matter what they put in it, it was getting hacked. Why fight it and be stuck with a hard to hack shell with games no one asked for?

They ain't that dumb..

Fk it, I'm going to pick one up tomorrow

The additional 7 empty gigs of space and open source emulator do make you wonder, don't they?

Or maybe they originally were going to include more games on this, I dunno.

All the ISOs of the 20 games combined comes at something just shy of 8Gb.

Add the UI, emulator data and save states and they probably had no choice but to go with 16Gb.

They went to 16GB but the thing is pretty full.

Gaadata is the folder with the games. There are only 782MB left, which makes me think they are bin/cue and there's no compression at all.

That's a bold claim, if it is indeed more powerful, it's not by a large margin.

But no, don't expect Dreamcast or GC from this thing. Same goes for the RPi3 though.
Sure, I don't disagree that it's not going to be a large margin, but there will still be a margin.

The Cortex A35 is an entry level chip, whilst the Cortex A53 in the Pi 3 is a mid tier chip. The Pi 3 has a notable performance per clock advantage, so the final performance delta is going to come down to clock speed difference (which we actually don't know for the PS classic, the 1.5ghz number people are throwing around is the maximum but we don't know if that's what the system uses).

The point is the PS Classic isn't a particularly powerful device, so keep your expectations in check.

Ah, gotcha. So there's only ~780mb of wiggle room left, and USB drives are mountable too.

That's the wiggle room, correct. But then again, PCSX reads pbp files officially so you can put a lot of more games on the console if you convert them from bin/cue or ISO to pbp. Shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: The thing reads USB drives. It should be as easy as hooking up a hard drive with games. Even better lol.

Awesome. Sony cheaping out on the software side makes this makes the product a bit more attractive imo.
I already have one, so It's a win-win situation, since sony wasn't planning on supporting the product longterm.
They had no plans to add more games to it, so they've made their money.

The hardware/design is pretty damn good, and that alone makes it better than a lot alternatives if the firmware becomes compromised.

Per Shoshi in the PS Classic thread, someone got Doom to run on it.

Doom continues its run being the most ported thing in existed.

As has been said before, I'd be prone to believe Sony didn't bother to put much effort/money into the emulation side of this thing because they knew the bare minimum they did would be good enough for the casuals and that the more game savvy would jump in once hacked. Thus crappy emulation and slack encryption. Dollars saved, Win/win. Although a gamble with the negative specialist press reaction to its lacklustre performance so fuck knows but it deffo smells of "It'll get hacked anyway, good enough, ship it"

Wait a minute...I need some explanations.

Aren't a .iso and a .bin/.cue roughly the same size?

I'm just caught off guard that there is so little space left.

ISO and BIN/CUE are more or less the same thing, they were saying that zero compression was used on the files at all. PBP (an official format used by sony on PSP/Vita/PS3) has compression and even a minimum amount of it wouldn't likely effect performance but could still drastically reduce the size of some of those games.

I haven't looked at the contents, but you have to remember that there are multiple very large games (FF7 is 3 discs, Metal Gear Solid is 2) with zero compression going on over 20 games I could see the space being completely used... but I'd have to go checking actual file sizes to be sure. FF7 especially has a ton of reused data between the 3 discs, so using PBP to store all 3 would have netted pretty significant gains in free space... but it wasn't really a concern of theirs I guess.

Nice to know that they cared so little about this product and put so little effort in that they couldn't even be bothered to put in any real security.

Not that it really matters anyway; these games have been pirated infinity billion times already and there are far better ways of playing them over this thing anyway. Don't even really see a point in hacking it at all TBH.

I just ripped my copy of FFVII this week-end and the three discs total size is 1.99GB

As for MGS, it must be something around 1.4GB.

Any confirmation if we can actually delete games in the PSC? Rainbow Six and Syphon Filter must go, and probably a couple others now that I know that space is so scarce. Sure I will add a dongle, but I also want a good base line-up!

It does suck that there's no good way of making FF7 take up less space, the only thing different per disc are the videos.

They used a public key? That's ... wow.

At this point i have to assume that some exec literally went into the dev offices, ripped some unfinished prototype out of some devs hands, who was still working on it the very same moment, and mailed it to the production lines.

The official Sony PBP version of FF7 is 1.32GB which is a solid 30% reduced size.

And MGS is 780MB though I'd think MGS dumped is probably closer to 1.2GB which would put it also about 35%.

So assuming Sony had used PBP as the compressed format for the games, there would likely have been about 5-6 additional GB free... but again, they probably just didn't feel the need since the space was there anyways.

This point has already been discussed again and again.

People got the box already, like me, we want to tinkle with it and push it to its best because we want it to be better than just looking good.

This sounds like a better, more constructive thing to do than shelving it, calling it a day, thinking it's worthless and leaving it at that.

Hopefully we can cut some games in the main line-up to free some very necessary space. :)

The PS Classic uses ISOs when the games have lots of .bin files like Toshinden. Others, like FFVII, use bin/cue. They're roughly the same size so still pretty big.

Converting them to .pbp should fix the size issues if you don't want to just use a big USB stick or something.

I have no problem with that, in fact I already asked for a mini 32Gb dongle for my job's gift trading, haha!

I just hoped there would be more space in there for starters. That's OK though, if we can cut some fat like Rainbow Six, that leaves place for the entire Crash Trilogy which roughly takes up 900Mb and RS is only one in many games I'd remove from there.

Excellent news. Guess I'm back on board with picking one of these up.

Yesterday people were posting that buying a PS Classic for hacking was silly because it wasn't going to be busted open like this...

Some were being bizarrely aggressive about it too. Looking at this thread shows there's no small amount of salt about those assertions being wrong :)
