Sonic All Star Racing Transformed is a better game than Mario Kart

In single player at the very least.

Mario Kart 8, whilst visually beautiful, with a great soundtrack, funs tracks to race on and great gameplay, is a bit long in the tooth now when it comes to that classic Mario Kart gameplay.

Sonic Transformed on the other hand offers such a wealth of content that Mario Kart seems lacking. Firstly you have the brilliant world tour mode that gives you a single player progression system to unlock new content, tackle tracks in different ways (normal races, rival challenges, drift challenges, boost etc) that keeps just giving more and more and helps you get familiar with the tracks. It even helps you progress from beginner to expert by allowing you to up the difficulty as and when you feel ready for it. You'll certainly need to as well to unlock it all.

Whilst mario does feature water and air racing now, it doesn't feel any different to being on a track, compared to Sonic Transformed where the three modes of travel not only all feel unique, are changed up not just on a per track basis but per lap to where one minute you are driving but the next the track has gone and you've got to take to the boat to finish the lap and the race.

There's also your standard Mario Kart GP mode, where this differs though is not only the tracks and gameplay but the difficulty. Lets be honest, Mario Kart is only fun at 150cc in GP mode and even then it's a bit of a slog, the other modes are slow and boring and often races involve a lot more luck than you'd certainly like. Whilst a skilled Mario Kart player can generally be 1st for most races the cheating AI makes it frustrating. Sonic Transformed on the other hand is difficult but fair. You lose a race because you did bad, not because you got every CPU character aiming for you. The game actually has the racers take each other out and not just aim for you all the time. Add in multiple routes, shortcuts and unlocks and you have a reason to play this.

The tracks require skill too, especially on the higher levels. Not only do you have to manage to track line much more then loose Mario Kart, but you'll need to trick and boost your way ahead of the pack. Talking about the tracks, each one is totally unique. Mario Kart also has a lot of unique brilliant tracks but theres a lot that feel samey, with wide corners and short layouts. Whilst they are more visually polished than Sonic's which can be a little bit too busy at times they do feel a little safe at times where as Sonic's are much more edge of your seat type stuff.

The nostalgia value is through the roof too with Sonic, so many little touches and details many of which you'll miss as you zoom by. From playing as the unlockable Daytona Car/Dreamcast Boat/ Harrier plane to the music and sound effects used in each track. Of course Mario Kart 8 has experimented with this a tiny bit with the DLC but it's never a visual overload and generally keeps the themeing very obvious with little in the way of easter eggs or details.

Add in time trials against staff ghosts, multiplayer and tracks which range widely from open and easy to tight and difficult it makes Sonic All Star Racing Transformed the better racing games especially for single player. Where as Mario has a barely thrown in GP mode which is just bot multiplayer if you ask me.

Multiplayer whilst still great is geared at the more hardcore gamer, weapons take a bit of a back seat compared to the free for all in Mario Kart but are still useful. But you need to know the tracks and skill to win, this is not a casual party game. That's probably where Sonic falls down, it's not a game three other friends can just jump on, win and have a great time. It requires players of equal skill and is more like a traditional racer in that regard.

Of course Sonic does have its share of problems just like MK but if it does one thing well it's a proper single player experience than a throw away multiplayer game. I only wish Mario took note of this game so we'd have the best of both worlds. Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed certainly needs a bit more love and now it's backwards compatible on Xbox One theres little excuse.

No lies detected. Mario Kart has been lacking since Crash Team Racing has shown what's what. Sonic All Star Racing Transformed is just one more kart racing game that pulls it weight above it. I spent a thoroughly good time with it.

Haven't played MK8 yet but it was definitely better than MK Wii.

I haven't played that but I do own mk8d and I share most of your critisms. You seem to like it well enoug; I actually really dislike it. I should try sonic because according to your post, I probably will find it better.

There's going to be some difference in opinion due to the fact the games are more different than they appear on the surface, as Mario Kart is of course the fun of Mario Kart, and All-Stars Transformed is more akin to an arcade racer.

I will say this, All-Stars Transformed is a lot, lot better than it probably should be and deserves its cult classic status. It's actually very, very good, from the actual gameplay to the creative stages, the unique way they handle single player that's addicting, and there's a lot of detail and attention paid to so many small faucets in the game, plus a lot of old SEGA love in various stages that does actually make for some varied and interesting track design.

But really it'll come down to preference which one you prefer as both are surprisingly different (surprising since I'll admit on surface level they look pretty similar and the first All-Stars game was more akin to Mario Kart than Transformed was), and I'd almost say appeal more to different audiences.

I'll back this up, too. Mario Kart went in this random party game direction long ago.

It's not better than Mario Kart 8, DS, or Double Dash. It's very, very good, though!

It’s just cheap imitation. It’s like the TESCO own brand cornflakes vs Kellogg’s.
I'll just say this now, anyone who claims this has obviously not played Transformed, since if you'd actually played it you'd know it actually plays less like Mario Kart and more like an evolved form of one of SEGA's own arcade racing games.

It's a very telling sign in topics like these who's actually played the games and who hasn't.

I agree for the solo mode, Nintendo better step it up next game.
It’s inexcusable for a game that sell 10M+

I hope Sonic Racing is going to be as good.

It's far better than Mario Kart 8. I say that as a huge Mario Kart fan! Transformed is far more interesting to play as a single-player experience, and the tracks are really great! Mario Kart has better weapons though.

I disagree, and I always felt this place and the old one overhyped it to a ridiculous degree. It’s an okay game and suffers from rhe driving not feeling as good and tracks being too fucking long.

I wouldn’t argue with anyone who felt Sonic Racing Transformed was the better game. It’s very well made.

I remember I bought racing transformed out of curiosity and my best friend at the time used to live shitting on anything sonic related. So the more I played i went from this is good, this is great, this game is awrsome, and ending with this is better than mario kart!

When I told my friend he thought i was trolling and i would tell him no seriously dude this game is fucking good. He never played it and just assumed it was a bad game because it was associated with sonic. He was the type to take anyones opinions with face value except for mine.

Absolutely true. Mario Kart is just a party game (if you drink a lot), otherwise it manages to be both boring and unfair.

It's just far superior than the last entries of Mario Kart in every possible ways, no matter which angle you take.

I'm not a Mario Kart hater. I enjoyed Mario Kart Wii, 7 (one of the best showcase for the 3DS that is not made by SEGA) and 8 (even on that gamepad!).

The handling is kind of ass though. And the performance isn't that good on consoles.

The only thing it has over MK8 is the single mode content, which IMO is pretty much one and done.

I can't tell.

I played both actually and Transformed is extremely good indeed. But to say that it beats like, MK8, sounds like a bold statement, but not necessarily false.

I'd put them on even grounds. They both excel at doing their things. MK8DX refines the MK formula to the best it ever was imo. While Sonic All Star Racing refines the Diddy Kong Racing formula to its best.

Both are excellent fantastic kart racers, but I couldn't tell which one is the best. It's one of these times where whynotboth.gif fits very well.

I would say it was a better game than most Mario Karts until 8. As far as I'm concerned at least.
But while I do think 8 is the superior game, I still prefer Transformed because... Well, it's got tracks based on Shinobi, Panzer Dragoon and Space Harrier. And yeah the single player progression is great.

IMHO:

MK8 > MKDS > MKDD > Transformed = DKR > MK7 = MKSC = SMK > MKWii > CTR > MK64.

Or something along those lines.

I enjoyed the first Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing game more than I have enjoyed Mario Kart in some time. I don't know what it was, the challenges, the gameplay? Everything combined I guess.

Mario Kart is a really good series, but it's kind of stale and familiar these days. Diddy Kong Racing was also notably better than MK64.

Transformed, I own and have put some hours into. Not as many as I'd like and more are planned. It didn't hook me as much as the first one did, for whatever reason. I felt compelled to 100% the first one and did, but never got credit for it due to a glitch.

I'm really regretful that I never got to play Crash Team Racing.

Apart some unexplicable choice in MK, for example the shells that hit and BLOCK YOU for 5 second in the middle of the track for no reason, MK is essentialy an arena game covered by driving elements, which can be good in some way, while SaASRT is a racing game in its core and then a battle game. In SRT you can do a best lap like you are in a normal racing game, in MK the best lap is a nonsense.

MK have the best graphics, but SRT have an incredible soundtrack, unmatched by MK. Both games have good elements but overall i find SRT superior, it'a a more honest game to me.

I do not like the driving engine. Mario Kart feels more fun. I think SP stuff in Sonic Racing is leaps and bounds, though. MK really struggles there. GP is tiring.

Not only content. Solo mode also a lot less cheap than MK8 because items impact less le gameplay.

The three main mechanics also are a lot more fun than racing in in mk8. I liked mk8 (doble dipped even on Switch) because I can play it with friends (it's easier to get into) but I find SASRT a lot more rewarding, complete and fun

I love transformed. waaaay matter than Mario Kart. Maybe because it's less random yet the stages are more chaotic? Transformed just seems like it takes more skill to master. I'm super excited for Sonic Racing.

I love Sonic All Star Racing Transformed. I still hope there's a sequel for PS4/XBOne/etc.

But no.

If the gameplay was more polished then we could have a conversation. But as it is, it has the beginnings of a worthy Mario Kart contender.

Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing is even better than Transformed.
Have people gone mad?

I loved Mario Kart Wii and DS, so I was expecting great things from Mario Kart 8. But it just fell flat for me, and I think it's because I had played Sonic Transformed beforehand.

One big factor was how much fairer the game felt. The AI manages to put up a decent fight despite there being no rubber banding and it being possible to avoid or mitigate every item using pure skill, as opposed to hoping you can find a throwaway item to use as a shield fast enough. Getting knocked around constantly by homing attacks isn't really enjoyable if you're actually trying to play the game for what it is, and not just messing around with friends.

It's certainly my favourite kart racer, and I look forward to anything else Sumo Digital does in the same vein. It's just a shame it wasn't able to reach the Mario Kart levels of popularity that it quite frankly deserved.

Sega Transformed is really good racer. I'm surprised Sega never released this on any of the current systems, especially their launches.

It’s very good, but I don’t agree that it’s better than Mario Kart. A worthy rival though.
Agreed, I own both and co-sign this. Sonic racing games are more fully featured than MK in terms of single player modes. MK has lacked in that area since MK DS.

But I prefer the aesthetics and core racing experience of MK. I don’t know, let’s say both games scratch a different itch.
