Welcome to the resistance bunker, glad you made it in one piece! I'm Redhead On Moped and I'll be in charge of the briefing while Commander Knuckles is away. If you have a fighting spirit, then you have a place in our ranks. Let's do it to it!
banner1storymwu9n.png

Here's how it happened. Making yet another grab for global domination, Dr. Eggman launches a large-scale offensive on an urban center. It is a desperate time for survivors; all hope is lost! Then, out of nowhere, appears the heroic visage of the world's fastest supersonic hedgehog -Sonic- who makes short work of the surrounding forces. But Dr. Eggman has a surprise of his sleeve. Sonic find himself face to face with a troop of much tougher enemies. One wields a mysterious power which proves too much for our hero. Sonic is defeated and captured! his present status is unknown. With nobody left to stop him, it's a matter of a few short months before Dr. Eggman succeeds in conquering all but a tiny fraction of the world. Our best reports say only 1 percent remains free from his rule. Even in Sonic's absence, the survivors weren't ready to give up! A rag-tag resistance was formed, with Knuckles The Echidna as commander. Together with their latest recruit, they are ready to do what needs to be done.

The fate of the world is in your hands!

Lean, mean, eyes of green, Sonic The Hedgehog is ready to take on the forces of Dr. Eggman!

Commander of the resistance, Knuckles The Echidna doesn't chuckle; he'd rather flex his knuckles fighting Dr Eggman's evil army!
miles68o0c.png

Miles Prower, known to his friends as Tails, has been out of it for months. Without Sonic, he seems to have lost direction in his life. His whereabouts are currently known only to few.
sanikck9epxl.png

This pudgy blue hedgehog seems to have arrived out of thin air. As far as we can tell, he's a Pint-Sized Sonic From Another Dimension. Perhaps he holds a key to saving our world...

There you are Buddy! Thank you for joining our ranks. Armed with that wispon, you're sure to be an asset for the team! Wispons are the go to-weapon for you and your friends, be they bear, bird, cat, dog, rabbit, hedgehog, or wolf!
ocho7qrps.png

This mysterious entity is somehow even faster than Sonic. Witnesses say he's the one that defeated him. What's his connection to Dr. Eggman, and how can we stop him?
klarge82akz.png

Large, and somehow in charge, Dr. Eggman must be stopped at all costs!

Bow your head low, all hail Shadow. From what we've learned, he was part of an infiltration operation alongside Team Dark, but contact was lost. Has he gone rogue?

There are 4 playable characters and 4 main gameplay styles in Sonic Forces. The first is Sonic/Shadow, where you race through the world in a style of play Similar to Sonic Unleashed (360) and Sonic Colors, minus the drifting. The second play style allows you to play as that Pint-Sized Sonic From Another Dimension, with controls similar to Sonic Mania, that's right, you get the drop dash! The next mode is all new, and it's all about your Buddy, the custom avatar hero! Buddy's look can be customized to suit your needs, but the kind of Buddy you pick changes the gameplay. Here's the score.

  • Bear: Blows away enemies with a Homing Attack
  • Bird: Flies high with Double Jump abilities
  • Cat: Keeps one Ring after being hit
  • Dog: Restarts with five Rings after the player dies
  • Hedgehog: Collects Rings when getting damaged
  • Rabbit: Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
  • Wolf: Automatically draws in Rings when near them

Buddy's gameplay is all about the wispon, a new weapon that works alongside the various alien wisps which have stayed on Sonic's world. Each wisp gives you a different color power for Buddy to use, so experiment with what's best for you. The possibilities are... INFINITE! The final mode allows Buddy to team up with Sonic and unleashed the real super power of teamwork with the incredible double boost! This maneuver dashes through everyone in your path, and with Sonic's speed and Buddy's Wispon, you'll be unstoppable!

Can I just say how hyped I am for this? Have avoided spoilers, went on partial blackout, and am getting an Xbox One X to enjoy it on. It's been too long, since 2011, for a Boost-Sonic style game. I'm also hyped for the OST as well, everything I've listened to has been golden, and this might be my first main entry OST purchase since Unleashed.

I mean, it's not too hard to figure out. It's a mixture of exposure to the character which people found appeal in. Some played Sonic games when young, some saw one of the various Sonic TV shows when growing up (there's been literally five different TV series, each with a surprising number of episodes, aired over the last 20+ years, there's even a Sonic show on Cartoon Network that's airing right now that's gotten fairly popular and recently aired its 100th episode), Sonic had one of the longest running comics of all time which was the most popular kids comic for many years, there's actually a variety of good games in the series (and bad, I think many are expecting Forces unfortunately to fall under this), plus there's been big spread of him with the internet as Sonic also kicked off between... certain faucets of the internet.

Sonic is maybe the only video game character that has most successfully mastered the multi-media scene that so many other series have failed at. He's had successful TV series (more than one!), comics, merchandising, and a lot more. I think that is a big part of it since he's really the only video game character who's successfully accomplished this. I think that's actually a big part why Sonic is still relevant today where so many have failed and he himself has had plenty of bad games sprinkled through the series, Sonic succeeded in branching out away from just games to find success and popularity, and is maybe the only video game character that has managed to do this so successfully.

Plus, for how many bad games there are in the franchise, Sonic actually has several pretty unique hooks in the games which do actually have appeal among audiences. There is actual value in a good Sonic level, so there's that aspect to it as well. And this isn't even digging into the huge Sonic Fan Game, Hacking, and Modding communities, or the fanfiction *cough*.

While game-wise, my Sonic has green eyes and turns into a Werehog at night, my Sonic period, as in the one I fell in love with, wasn't on a cartridge, or a disc, a tv screen... It was on a page, and it was written by Ian Flynn.

And this game is the closest I'll get to that feeling.

And that is why I want this game so bad.

Keeping my expectations low. Clearly sounds like it's not going to be anywhere as good as Generations or Colors. Hell, I thought Lost World was fine until the last world where all the flaws were way more present & persistent.

....but I'm only paying $4 for this, so least I'll make some money back on it if I beat it as quickly as everyone says it is.

so guys

what if this is all secretly a way for sega to tie the persona series, mainly persona 5, to the sonic series

& this is all actually eggman's palace that you have to enter & the avatar is really the MC, hence the pre-order DLC clothing, while everyone else is just your party members turned into animals and you gotta steal eggman's treasure which then turns him back to dr. robotnik?

.....sadly, someone has probably tried to put more effort into linking them together than i did in this post.

What about Pokemon, which is arguably more popular than Sonic since that franchise is popular in its home country(as well as the rest of the world), unlike Sonic?

You got me there, Pokemon would be the one above Sonic there. To the point I often forget Pokemon was even a video game first since I learned about the Trading Card Game as a kid before the video games.

But I can't think of anything that comes close to Pokemon and Sonic in terms of branching out of gaming success to date. I think if you were to place an order, it'd probably go Pokemon > Sonic > Resident Evil, but Resident Evil is way behind the other ones and mainly gets that spot because it's the only video game franchise with a successful movie series that really did boost the series brand name and did well in the box office (plus other ventures that weren't quite as successful, such as comics/manga, the recent CG films, etc. Board game coming soon).

This said, I don't think it changes the core point much. Sonic is one of the only video game franchises that have successfully managed to break out in other mediums and find audiences there, which I think is a big part of why he's still relevant today.

Instead of Miku, it's now Miku in a Sonic outfit:

& instead of a Persona remix, you get a bunch of Sonic Mania tracks to dance to.

.........damn it, now I want that to happen

I get paralysed with the options in a character creation. I'm sure my first few hours with Forces will be getting my avatar just right.

I just hope the game isn't a buggy unplayable mess, that's the low bar I want it to clear.

Technically it's a competent game, no bugs or slowdowns or anything like that. Yet it somehow still manages to be less fun than 06.

A Huelen Sonic OT... God bless ResetEra.

Looking forward to playing this tomorrow on the One X. I've got my expectations firmly lowered, but it's been so long since Generations that I'm hoping it'll still be a decent enough romp all the same.

At the very least, I'm hoping the story goes full-on insanely stupid.

Got the game on friday and liked it.
Many story is really short, but to 100% this game it will take some time.
Didn't expect the avatar gameplay to be good, but I was pleasantly surprised!!

I want this to be a B Tier game I can enjoy a reasonable amount while gleaning slightly nostalgic early 00's vibes from the edgy story and Sonic Rock music.

I'm looking forward to it a lot. I know people are decrying it, but I am still positive. I love boost Sonic and mechanically, it was absolutely sound at Gamescom. Those comparisons to Sonic 2006 and claims it should rate below 60 are strange to me, because the mechanical quality of what I have played suggests that this is unfounded, even if the level design actually is much weaker than it used to be in other boost Sonics (which still would be truly unfortunate.

Now that the OT's finally up I guess it's time to give my ULTIMATE THOUGHTS!

• Modern Sonic being more on rails is a positive in my book TBH. In fact, the only wonky parts that annoyed me were a few sections in later levels where he wasn't on rails and I flew off an edge because I could barely see him in the midst of all the robot explosions and assumed the game would automatically make him turn like usual.

• I really like Classic Sonic in this game. Having the Drop Dash is fun and the level design is straight up better than Generations as far as I'm concerned, they reveal a lot of depth when you try to go for the collectibles. I had no idea there were two lower sections to Casino Forest until I intentionally let myself fall between the flippers to get some red rings.

• Avatar is a playstyle that they'll never bring back and I'll be fine with never seeing again, but in terms of Sonic Team gimmicks he's probably the least awful they've ever done, mostly because he plays pretty much the same as Modern Sonic. He feels even better when you get Wispons that have bonuses to make up for his shortcomings, it's no shocker that everyone at the top of the leaderboards uses a Wispon with the stomp boost ability.

• THE MUSIC! All the radio chatter makes it a bit hard to hear the first time around, but after turning the radio off - man there are some good tracks here. Classic Sonic in particular is a pleasant surprise, his tunes are what Sonic 4's music should have been. Ghost Town (which kinda sounds like a Diamond in the Sky remix) and Casino Forest are my favorites there. For Modern Sonic I love Sunset Heights and the inside of Network Terminal, and my favorite Avatar songs were of course the ever popular Park Avenue and Aqua Road.

• Not a huge fan of the QTEs and mid-level cinematics. They're cool the first time, but unnecessary on replays as they break the flow. Null Space in particular annoyed me by having a hard-to-perform rail skip that saves a LOT of time at the very start, but like 20 seconds of forced Double Boost cutscene every time you hard restart the stage.

• Sonic Team is this close to finding the sweet spot for level length. If every level in Forces was just a minute longer I would have been completely satisfied, as it stands they always leave me wanting more! (Which admittedly isn't the worst problem to have.) On the plus side, I have already done more speedrunning in Forces than any previous Modern Sonic game, as I can stomach restarting a short 1:30 level much more easily than trying to do a 4+ minute level perfectly.

• The campaign is pretty short but there's a surprising amount of replayability here. Having 3 sets of collectibles and tons of missions that unlock more Avatar costumes really gives you a lot to do.

I had to review it for another site and gave it 8/10. It has problems but I would classify Sonic Colors as a 9/10 game and that had its issues as well, I just had a lot of fun with both. Much like with another of my favorite games this year (Knack 2), the inevitable middling scores from critics are disappointing only because I expect a lot of people will miss out on a good game because of them. I'll be interested to see what fellow Sonic fans in this thread think of it.

BRING ON THE SHADOW DLC

I'm looking forward to it a lot. I know people are decrying it, but I am still positive. I love boost Sonic and mechanically, it was absolutely sound at Gamescom. Those comparisons to Sonic 2006 and claims it should rate below 60 are strange to me, because the mechanical quality of what I have played suggests that this is unfounded, even if the level design actually is much weaker than it used to be in other boost Sonics (which still would be truly unfortunate.

Anyone who likens this to 06 doesn't know what a bad game is. That's the only possible explanation I can come up with as to how someone can actually try to argue that Forces is remotely comparable to a game where almost everyone who played it had to re-do the first 15 minutes after dying to the cheap Mach Speed section of Wave Ocean because the game doesn't have a damn autosave.

Camjo-Z I am very happy to read your thoughts on the game. Forces need not be an absolute gem for me to be well-entertained and what I have read from you makes me confident I will have a lot of fun. Also, 60fps in a high speed game is absolutely required and I loved how smooth the game already felt at Gamescom. 1:30 sounds short for a boost Sonic level, but I rather have levels a tad too short than much too long.

Not sure. I only finished Sonic's story in 06 because I was sick to death of dying because the game messed up and the endless loading screens.

Some of the criticism I've heard about Forces don't concern me. The overly dramatic story especially sounds great in a "that's so dumb" kind of way that reminds me of SA2.

The pre-review scores have bummed me out. All they really needed to do was give me generations 2. I don't even mind the plot. I just don't understand what's so hard about taking that winning formula and doing more with it, without getting gimmicky.

Was checking the character creation, bummer, no option to change the body shape, that sucks, they should have had body type templates based on sonic's friends, like Tails, Cream, Big, Vector, Rouge or the sonic boom version of Knuckles.
