Camjo-Z Gotta say I like the model in your avatar.

It's a datamined render from the Speed Battle tie-in, I really liked the look of it. There's a Baby Sonic render too.

There's some fun to be had it's not a bad game, but yeah. I think Adventure 1 and Heroes are both better.

Speed Battle got updated with the Golden Bay Zone movie tie-in tracks, and they have a very fitting music choice.

Is Speed Battle worth playing? Toyed with it on launch and kind of forgot about it. Are most players super sayians by now, would it be impossible for a newbie to catch up?

It has skill-based matchmaking, so I imagine you wouldn't be getting matched with the players who have 4000+ trophies like in my video. Even if you somehow did, you wouldn't be punished for losing to them, whereas they would lose a ton of trophies if they lost to you because of the difference in rank.

I think it's a solid game now, a little repetitive by nature and you end up watching a lot of ads to open chests early and double your rewards, but the core racing gameplay is fun and they fixed the rampant balance issues that made me quit before. All of the previously cheap moves like Jet's Bashosen and Shadow's Storm Cloud have been greatly nerfed.

That's good to hear. Just played it for a bit and it seems pretty solid. What should I be spending my Red Rings on? Are any of the deals actually worth it? Should I just be focused on leveling one character?

I've played for a while and you don't seem to earn enough red rings for free to really do anything major with them, I just sometimes spend a few unlocking high tier chests early when I get impatient.

I don't think any of the shop deals are worth the money (only cash I've spent on the game was a small pack of red rings to remove ads between races) but if you really want to spend $10, you should wait for the Movie Sonic event. There's a feature called Tails' Vault that basically lets you get double the amount of cards you'd normally earn for the current event character.

As for leveling, you should level up everyone since you get XP for doing so, which buffs all of your characters by increasing your top speed from rings as well as increasing your defense against enemy items.

Hype check for the Sonic movie. You guys hyped?! Cause I am. Valentines day cant come soon enough. I've been rewatching the trailers and footage so much and checking out cast interviews and whatnot. Never been this excited for a game movie before.

I'm hype as hell. Love the way Carrey is handling Robotnik as I'm seeing some kind of development in Robottnik as we see more footage of the movie. Sonic looks great too and Schwartz is doing a great job with Sonic voices. Jokes are light and fun, action looks great. I'll take my niece and nephew to see this movie!

Just popping in here to say I finally -- finally! -- s-ranked all the hard mode levels and the special stages in Sonic Lost World the other day. I still mostly like the game, even if the fast controls are a bit too slippery. I think the game's overall more consistent and I think they mostly took better care with the wisps in this one (I don't love the tilt controls for the quake power). I think a couple of the stages could have stood to have been broken up but I ultimately think they did a better job of building around 3D ideas than the WiiU/PC game did, where it felt like over 2/3 of the game was 2D. I think part of it is that the stage layouts have a stronger tendency to be built around the tunnel designs -- like Windy Hill 3 in the console version -- which were conceptually the strongest part of that game. Everything tends to feel a lot more consistent and developed, and the wisps are much better integrated into this version of the game. It's not even all that hard or daunting, though I thought at first that the hard mode was going to be much more challenging than it was in the end.

My biggest issues with the game is that the Master Zik battle is just a worse version of the same fight we've seen since Sonic Rush's Egg Scarab, and the tilt controls for the quake wisp and special stage are difficult, especially since the latter can go pretty screwed up pretty easily.

Also the parkour is much easier to control on 3DS.

I also beat Shattered Crystal, which I did not expect to do in just a couple days, but there you go. It was OK.

I find it kind of funny that Speed Battle's all but been dropped from the name and the game goes by "Sonic Forces" wherever it can get away with it.

Looks like they finally fixed the crippling slowdown it was having with new versions of Android so I guess my old bathroom distraction is back.

Eddache (Eddie Bowley, who also works with Tomska's Turbo Punch) put out a Sonic video, and it's pleasantly devoid of most of the worst elements that tend to pop up ("Sonic was never good" "Sexy/Cringe Fanart" etc, except for the thumbnail of all things, but I'll give that a pass). It's decently researched and not too long:

Finished Sonic 3&K via Genesis mini hack with all Super Emeralds collected. Still maintain that it's peak 2D platformer material behind Mania, cause goddamn!

Really? I replayed it not too long ago on Steam and still find the speed stages to be just as much of as blast as I remembered.

I recently tried to play Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast, I found the game incredibly boring and unfun on any section or mission not involving Sonic or Shadow. Really don't know what I saw in this game when it came out, I just found anything not a speed stage really insufferable.

Sonic Adventure 1 for me is in the same boat, but at least I can just play as Sonic throughout the entire story instead of playing Hero or Dark and having to jump through a bunch of missions running around looking for an emerald or shooting robots in a tank.

That's interesting, the Eddache thumbnail changed to crop out most of Sonic. So I guess you can remove even that caveat.

If your have T-Mobile, I saw in the app they're going to offer $4 Sonic movie tickets. They usually do it via a code link through Atom or something similar, so if you have a friend or follow the T-Mobile Tuesday thread (if people still update it), you might be able to get a cheap ticket. If I can get extra codes, I'll post them here.

I played SA2 a while back around when it came out on Steam and I mostly wasn't a fan either. I like that the Sonic and Shadow stuff is more momentum than speed based in theory, but the physics are so aggressive that it's hard to maintain it. The level design loves to screw you up and if your control stick is just slightly out of pocket then everything stops you dead. I don't even want to know how many times I tried to get to the top of the Metal Harbor missile in order to get the A-rank.

I don't agree with the " cringe part " i think cringe and how its used is kinda dumb.
But yeah rodger as of late is kinda.... eh

I think it speaks volumes that I heard Ben's sonic for less than 10 minutes and went " no this is better , this is better in all ways he should just be sonic "

I figured they would just dropped the forces part

That twitter guy is beyond annoying as all hell.

But yeah I'd could get behind Sega doing another recast for every non-eggman character, i would rather not hear Rodger's performance in a SA1 remake at all.

TWIP is one of the most whiny, irritating Youtubers I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. He makes Arlo look like a bastion of positivity.

They just seemingly recast a bunch of the voices for Team Sonic Racing. Unless it was budget limitations that prevented them from hiring back some of them.

IIRC all current Sonic productions from SEGA are non-Union (though I think Roger and some of the current cast are fi-core?) which is why they weren't able to get Ryan Drummond back during Colours, but I might be misremembering. I'm fine with Roger personally.

To whomever made the time attack ranks on Sonic Pocket Adventure's "Advanced" time attack mode, where you have to finish with 50 rings, even stricter than the normal time attack mode: why

I want to get my hopes up for the Sonic Movie, but I know in my head it's going to be the same old "Here's your favourite character doing things YOU do in the real world, isn't it wacky?" followed by a overly long human subplot that takes up too much time (Because we need to save budget on the CGI) that is either.

1. Guy needs to find his place in the world and does so through encounter with character from another world.
2. Dad overly busy with work and needs to find time to spend with his family and does so through encounter with character from another world.
3. Dad needs to connect back up with estranged daughter/son and does so through encounter with character from another world.

Given the trailers show a daughter, I'll go with option 3 for this one.

The over-eccentric villain almost always is the best part of these films as well. Weirdly enough.

What's interesting is there seems to be setup for a secondary villain Sonic fleed from in the first place. (There were even some story details that came out around the same time as Baby Sonic, but before we actually saw him, IIRC.) And Jimbotnik seems to go back to Sonic's world, meaning if there was a sequel, we'd probably see more of the secondary villain.

I think Roger is fine as Sonic
Now Kirk as Shadow is a huge miscast
Kirk seemed to start doing ok during the last Twitter takeover. I think it's the strict direction he's getting to stay in one pissed-off/snarly mode all the time that's really hurting his performance.
I don't think he's getting strict direction at all tbh. Or at least consistent direction. Sega has made a bunch of big mistakes when it comes to sonic and now they are kinda culminating into this decline and all the people who remember how to make a lot of the good stuff are gone. And they kinda gotta figure out, why people liked those things and what worked. Shadow is one of those things. Wouldn't be surprised if he's characterized differently in his next appearance. Ian Flynn spoke more on the matter, and sega just seems more confused if anything

All that said, I still think kirk is a miscast. Yeah some preformances are better than others, but kirks voice even when toned down isn't...shadow.IMO anyway. I feel the same way about sonic and rodger, it feels like somoene doing an impression not the character themselves. The fakers sound like fakers. IMO anyway.

Shadow should be voiced by Crispin Freeman or Johnny Yong Bosch. Even Yuri Lowenthal would have worked

My vote is still for Khary Payton I would also suggest Bryton James another guy who conviently played cyborg at some point, however he's an onset actor aswell and problaly wouldn't have the time. But if that were possible, it would be kinda sick

At last I can put Sonic Pocket Adventure to rest. I think I would have managed to do that sooner but it took me too long to realize that, akin to Sonic CD 2011, the speed shoes don't really work if you're not on the ground.

And I fucking swear in order to beat Cosmic Casino 2's advanced time attack you have to use the slots. Fuckin bullshit luck based speedrun challenges.

Been replaying Sonic Adventure 2 and call it nostalgia but there's just an ambition in this game that I can't see modern Sonic having again, each stage having 5 separate missions, an entire optional virtual pet sim, so much variety in the stages themes, secret power ups and some great exploration in the levels, an great if super shonen story with Shadow as a consistent rival, Sonic and Eggman teaming up, a story that has both its comedy and its serious moments like Sonic (apparently) dying, Eggman having the performance of a lifetime as the main villian for most of the campaign, a secret level unlocked once you get all the ranks, multiplayer thrown in because why not, Shadow has an effective arc from villian to hero, and a commendable job of introducing not one, but two main characters who fit in like a glove into the existing cast.

and one of the best soundtracks in the series, if not the medium, of course, with every character having its completely distinct style for all their levels that not only fit the level but the character perfectly.

I think despite its flaws its still a prime example of what Sonic can be, an adventure thats equal parts ridicuous, endearing, high-stakes, and most importantly driven by the diverse cast of characters, not just Sonic doing meta humor about how he's fast or whatever. I'd be scared if there ever was a remake they would try to pander to the internet commenters and try and destroy what makes the game so unique still.

I went ahead to see what the android version of Sonic Dash looks like these days given the mention of the baby sonic form, and it's almost unrecognizable from the original release (apparently this update happened late 2018 based on some cursory googling). I have to salute them to finding a way to get all the characters to stand out from each other and make the enemies more than a mere hazard annoyance, though I presume that we're going to be looking at pretty bland ones inspired by the movie for a little while.

Now I feel like a bit of a chump for putting my attention onto the Windows version instead of Android, not that I have any strong opinion about the Angry Birds cameo.

Huh. I remember the original video for that, but it seemed like another one of the neat bits of concept work that don't ever materialize as a game that pop up from time to time. Looks more Sonic and less Rayman now, with a dash of Ori.

IDW #25 was pretty good. Lots of things happening, the art quality was tops (I could see some of the crying faces getting a mixed reception, but I thought they were well done), and definitely a few striking moments.

I forgot to mention (I could edit, but I want this in a separate post anyway) that I have one extra of those $4 Sonic Movie codes. You need to download the Atom Films app (and if you don't have a loyalty program like AMC Stubs, you'll pay a $1.50 fee, but it's still cheaper), then at checkout, enter this code:
