I'm off to see it with my two daughters and my nephew on Sunday. They're all really excited. I'm not going to read any reviews but the headlines I'm seeing are encouraging. I never thought it'd be the best movie but hoped it wouldn't be trash either. Looks like I might get my wish.

Nice to see the Sonic movie doing better than expected.

Been replaying Sonic Adventure 2 and call it nostalgia but there's just an ambition in this game that I can't see modern Sonic having again, each stage having 5 separate missions, an entire optional virtual pet sim, so much variety in the stages themes, secret power ups and some great exploration in the levels, an great if super shonen story with Shadow as a consistent rival, Sonic and Eggman teaming up, a story that has both its comedy and its serious moments like Sonic (apparently) dying, Eggman having the performance of a lifetime as the main villian for most of the campaign, a secret level unlocked once you get all the ranks, multiplayer thrown in because why not, Shadow has an effective arc from villian to hero, and a commendable job of introducing not one, but two main characters who fit in like a glove into the existing cast.

and one of the best soundtracks in the series, if not the medium, of course, with every character having its completely distinct style for all their levels that not only fit the level but the character perfectly.

I think despite its flaws its still a prime example of what Sonic can be, an adventure thats equal parts ridicuous, endearing, high-stakes, and most importantly driven by the diverse cast of characters, not just Sonic doing meta humor about how he's fast or whatever. I'd be scared if there ever was a remake they would try to pander to the internet commenters and try and destroy what makes the game so unique still.
Me to a T.

So yeah, the Sonic movie was... good? Like, a competent enough movie with just enough fanservice to keep me interested and Sonic ended up being characterized well enough that it actually seemed like a proper in-universe story, in some way.

Honestly, once they started playing Hyper Potions music I knew I was in for the ride regardless. Echidnas and the mid-credits tease just cemented that.

I still don't like how Carrey played Robotnik and it was a gigantic missed opportunity for Agent Stone to be Snivley, but the way he ends up at least gives hope that Eggman proper will be done right if they ever get a sequel.

Right so I'm replaying Sonic Unleashed and to my shock it has been relatively frustation free! Not completely, but it hasn't been that bad and considerably more enjoyable than my recent SA2 replay. To my surprise the medal gating has been almost a non issue! I am at the point of the game where I now need to medal hunt for the Adabat day level and.....

To my shock I only need 5 medals! That's gonna be a cakewalk. And I haven't even touched a side act yet. Normally this is the soul crushing portion of the game but I've been very diligent with my medal collecting in the main stages so far to avoid my pain. Worked well.

Update: Eggmanland is as absolutely atrocious as ever. Good fucking lord how in the world did this utter garbage make it in the game? Did this shit even get playtested? Surely one fucking person at Sega played this during development and put their hand up to say how fucking bad this is? Like..... jesus fucking christ HOW DOES THIS MAKE IT IN TO THE FULL GAME IN THIS STATE?! Just absolute horseshit game design throughout the entire stage. And they know it too. That's why they give you lives at the start of so many checkpoints.

Ok I'm calm. Well anyways I made it through that shite and all I have are the last boss fights. Seriously Eggmanland is so bad it's unbelievable.

As long as you keep an eye open for them, I've always said that medals really aren't THAT big of a deal. Most are hidden in really obvious places and don't require a lot of thought to find, just the effort of going out there to get them. Which still kind of sucks, I guess.

this reminds me of a story about development of I Wanna Be The Boshy, where the creator got through an area their first time without dying and decided "ok that works" and didn't touch it ever again.

Medals really aren't that bad if you look around your first time around. I literally never had to go back to a stage to find more. A remaster should remove the requirement tho.

Regarding Eggmanland, yeah it's a very difficult stage. What parts of it are you having trouble with ?

I'm excited for SEGA AGES Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to come to Switch this week in NA, but it doesn't still frustrate me how SEGA holds the Taxman versions hostage and seems to severely undervalue him and his team in general.

Remaking the deleted levels from Sonic 2 is such an insanely cool addition, but the fact that it's exclusive to mobile is baffling. M2 certainly did the best with what they had, but it would've been so cool if there was an option to play the Taxman version as well.

Similarly, Sonic Mania is an incredible game, but it seems like we aren't getting a sequel soon. That game couldn't have been terribly costly to make, and it seemed like a big success. So why won't they make another one?

Finally, they've got to figure out the Sonic 3 issue. Give the Jackson estate money if they want it. Change the soundtrack to the PC version. Whatever they need to do. The Genesis Mini and Genesis Collection that came out on current gen feel so incomplete without one (two?)of the best Genesis games.

Yo what the fuck?! If you give souvenirs to professor pickle in Sonic Unleashed he gives you medals?! THE GAME SHOULD GIVE YOU THIS INFORMATION VERY FUCKING CLEARLY VERY FUCKING EARLY!

12 years later I have only just discovered this. Imagine the frustration of medal hunting I could have avoided. Good lord.

It's only a couple, though. Most of the time he just tells you where you can find medals in stages or alludes to secret routes with the worst possible guidance.

Yeah, Sega needs to figure out their Sonic 3 stuff. It's not right to leave the game hanging.

Dived in to a lot of the side content of Sonic Unleashed today. This game has a LOT of content.

It's too bad so little of it is actually good. My god the back and fourth with the NPC side quests just to get access to tiny missions with bad level design. Feels like a lot of this could have been cut down to give the player quicker easier access to the actual gameplay content. And the side acts are almost all completely awful. This game just loves pulling the rug from under the player doesn't it?

Level starts. Oh a line of rings. As the game has taught me so far, better start boosting. Immediately boost off a cliff that was out of view. Oh well. Oh look a row of enemies. Boost time! Another cliff I couldn't see. Ah. Side acts are FULL of this bullshit. Level design really is atrocious in damn near everything that isnt Act 1. I can understand a certain amount of memorisation required to to perfect runs and whatnot. But the side acts insistence on punishing the player with things they couldn't see coming with either immediate death or damage is just....bad.

When people say Unleashed has the best version of the boost gameplay they're purely talking about the Act 1's, right?

Seeing the movie really got me into a Sonic mood, so I went on eBay and rounded out my collection a bit more:
  • Sonic Unleashed (Wii)
  • Sonic Colors (Wii)
  • Sonic: Lost World (Wii U)
  • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (Wii U)
I already own Transformed on PC, but I figured it would be nice to have a version to play multiplayer on the TV. As for the rest, I own Unleashed on 360, but the werehog levels are just a bit too much for me, and I remembered them not being so bad on Wii when I had that version back in the day. And I've never played Colors before, or much of Lost World, so I'm excited to finally play them.

The Werehog levels are worse on the Wii version, in my opinion. The controls are way more stiff, there's almost no combat variety to speak of whatsoever, and even if they break Werehog levels down in to smaller chunks, making you play 3-5 of those chunks in a row feels like way more of a slog than it does on the 360 version.

Plus Werehog attacks are way more finicky using motion controls.

My friend was talking about Sonic Rush the other day and it suddenly hit me that despite being a huge Sonic fan, I have still never played Rush, Rush Adventure, or Colors DS... so I went ahead and ordered them all on eBay for about $30 total. Rush showed up first!

Playing a game where Sonic can boost but not homing attack or stomp feels really weird initially, but I guess it wasn't weird back then. The boost here is also very different, feels like you actually have to earn it instead of just having it handed to you like pretty much every other boost game.

I was always a little wary of these games when I saw gameplay because it seemed like the screen size would be way too cramped to tell what's going on and where you're supposed to go, and that's kinda true but not as much as I expected. I'm four Zones in and while it's been pretty fun the DIMPS level design is starting to rear its head, there are some noticeable spots where the game just suddenly throws some slow platforming at you, and you either recognize it immediately and execute it perfectly or fly off a cliff and into a bottomless pit.

The boss battles are neat (although they all take way too long for how simple their attack patterns are), but surprisingly my favorite part about this game is the special stages. The way you access them is cool, they control great, aren't too difficult, have a neat gimmick in the form of leaping off the half-pipe and doing the little Ouendan-ish sections, have great music... what more could you ask for?

Rush and Rush Adventure are two of my absolute favourite Sonic games. Rush was a revolution back then. The way it completely turned Sonic gameplay on its head and executed it so well felt amazing back then. Rush Adventure ironed out some of the flaws and was a damn good sequel.

Oh and to this day Rush and Rush Adventure have my overall favourite bosses in the series. Rush 1 in particular also had a story I was really in to. Blaze best girl.

I agree with this. Heck i'm scared for a sa1 remake for that reason. That games plot goes from " AW YEAH THIS IS HAPPENING " to like " Everyone burned to fucking death and spawned a vengeful water monster " to " I'm hanging out in a casino " to " The water monster killed a bunch of people an drowned a city " . There are wild anime ass jumps in tone that need to be taken at face value that I don't need winks at the camera

I'm so jealous that you get to experience these games for the first time. ^_^

If you can, in the case of Rush and Rush Adventure, don't "rush" through them and call it quits after you've beaten the final bosses. These two only get better and better as you memorize the level layouts and aim for those S-ranks. The replayability is there and it's so satisfying to hone your reflexes trying to shave seconds off of your clear times.

I can't wait to revisit these games eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Jury's still out on the bosses (although I do like them), but I couldn't agree more with the rest, right down to Blaze's general awesomeness. She should've replaced Rouge in the pecking order eons ago.

For as much use as it serves, you can Jump + R Button to homing attack.

Yeah, wish I'd known about that there R button before I died to one specific spot over and over on Night Carnival Act 2 where you have to press R+Up to reach a platform positioned right next to a bottomless pit, even though said maneuver was never once required before. Not since the White Land 2 jump in F-Zero and the Carnival Night Zone barrel have I seen such a devious trick, I'm sure plenty of kids got stuck at that spot in 2005.

But... they're called "Sonic Rush"! That must mean I'm supposed to rush through them! Why would the marketing lie to me? GOTTA GO FAST GOTTA GO FAST GOTTA GO FA- oh, sorry, don't know what came over me there. I must be spending too much time in other threads.

I'll definitely go for some S-Ranks, any good Sonic game deserves a few replays!

BWAHAHAHAHA

Legit the first time the game requires you to use the R button in Sonic Rush I was stuck for like a day. It really is a Sonic 3 barrel moment.

Also, how do folks feel about Infinite?

Fun and surprisingly self-aware concept that went totally wasted by putting most of his backstory in a comic nobody read and having him unceremoniously vanish at the end of his own game. They couldn't even do the most obvious slam dunk of making him playable in TSR or the Forces mobile game. Characters that weren't even IN Forces are playable in the mobile game!

I don't mind the Deadly Six in theory, I just wish they had a single actual personality between them. A sentai team of magic goblins that look like they dropped out of NiGHTS shouldn't be a hard sell as a group of antagonists, but they've got less charisma than the Babylon Rogues, let alone Eggman. Zavok's positioned as this cunning schemer but everything about his design screams "brute muscle" and he's not good at either, and everyone else is a stereotype with legs.

IIRC all current Sonic productions from SEGA are non-Union (though I think Roger and some of the current cast are fi-core?) which is why they weren't able to get Ryan Drummond back during Colours, but I might be misremembering. I'm fine with Roger personally.

If I remember right Ryan actually auditioned for the role of Sonic again and got it. But then they wanted him to be non union so he had to say no. I need to look for a source for this sometime but when I first heard about that it bummed me out a lot. Still does.

I think he;s wasted potential, why does Sega want to act like he never happened? He's better than Zavok
sega has a weird tendency to completely ignore things that weren't a 100% success the first time instead of trying to salvage them, see the Babylon rogues, the entirety of shadow the hedgehog, sonic 06, the storybook series, etc. the exception is how they keep bringing the deadly six eben though no one likes them
