A great series still languishing in gacha hell, absorbing other series for its nefarious means...

Yeah it is a pity that Fate/Stay Night is just known as a porn Visual Novel. The All Ages version, for example (that is also the version I played), completely removes the H scenes and the story is not impacted at all. It is a really long VN, but the story is wonderful, including how you understand everything only after playing all the three routes.
The VN is loved by many so don't worry about it. The people that actually read it know that it's a great story that tackles many themes with wonderful characters. The porn jokes pretty played out honestly.

Happy to see all the Type Moon & Fate love in here, been playing FGO Japan ver since it first came out and excited for Lostbelt 5.

I frequently hang out on a popular Type Moon forum called Beast's Lair to read translations and discussions. Currently a really big fan of the fate/strange fake light novels!

Now....Tsukihime remake pls TM ;;

I mean, my friend Kiki's been bugging me about getting into it for years and I just finished the Unlimited Blade Works anime.

I wouldn't say I'm hooked yet, but I'm having fun at least.

Can I just say though that Sony basically has almost nothing to do with this game?

Type Moon does the writing and owns the IP, Delightworks does the developing, and Aniplex is the publisher, and Sony owns Aniplex. That's multiple layers of removal.

Super depressing as in sad/depressing stuff happens in the world?

Or super depressing because a lot of historical figures are turned into top tier waifus and husbandos?

Fate/Zero is a depressing anime in general so if that's the first thing you say I get why you'd think that. Fate/Stay Night has some dark elements, but it's way more optimistic about making your dreams/ideals come true in a cold world. Each of the endings are some of the happiest endings you can find in any story. The epilogue is also one of the most heartfelt endings ever made. The other spinoffs like Carnival Phantasm and Emiya Gohan are cute and optomistic with no real conflict.

Nasu as a whole is a very humanist writer who is firmly optimistic, with in general going under the idea that "sure bad stuff might happen, but people will pull through in the end."

Gen Urobochi, who wrote Fate/Zero, is a cynical sadsack who hates women and only got away with this particular tone due to writing a prequel who's problems that all the big serious competent adults caused get solved by a plucky teenager.

I find the extended Fate universe of spin offs and games to be absolute trash, especially FGO which specifically targets mentally ill people.

The original VN is very good though, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not surprised to see F/GO at the top.
Meanwhile, Monster Strike's just been out here still grindin'. Feel like I heaven't heard anyone talk about it since, like, 2015.

The former! :P It's weird, I can watch movies like The Raid and and Polar and anime like Claymore and Death Note and I'm fine but for some reason the atmosphere of Fate makes me nope out. I played a bit of FGO and Jeanne Alter's story in France hit me quite harder than normal o.o

Hmm I see, I might have to try again and see one thing through to the end then. But yeah it's not so much the events in itself that get me but rather the way they are told, like I mentioned above Jeanne Alter hit me really hard. Then I also played the Summer Event in FGO were they are on a lost island and that was fine but something about it still felt weirdly negative to me. It's almost as the way the stories are written impacts me negatively in my subconscious somehow.

Nasu is also one of the best writers in anime for female characters thanks to his love of bishoujo manga and anime like Utena. He has a great understanding of writing interesting female characters that have clear motives and can hold conversations with other women that don't revolve around the main character or men in general.

Urobutchi one the other hand is terrible when writing female characters and had many of them have no agency in Fate/Zero. All of his original female characters are were choked out by men and even Saber was written poorly by reducing her character to being an idiot when talking about kingship. She's a far better king than Gilgamesh and Iskandar ever were and yet she can't even defend herself without throwing a tantrum.

So, someone help me out:

1) Is this mobile gaming or gaming in general? I just looked it up and this thing is generating billions in revenue which, unless I'm misreading, is pretty nuts for a f2p game.
2) wtf is this game? It's an RPG, but what's up with all these weird scenes people are posting?

Thanks. My brain needs help

Gacha games taking your paycheck by luring you with handsome men. Not that I would ever fall for such a scheme.

Being F2P is hard :(

I haven't heard this before honestly. The writing in early FGO is so poorly done that all I felt was disappointment when compared to F/SN. Have you seen the UBW anime? If you don't want to read the visual novel you can start there. It's an optomistic story in general about pursuing your dreams no matter what.

That's pretty crazy and I do like FGO (even though I'm drowning in gacha salt right now). I wish the story was as good as the VN, Camelot was the only singularity that felt close.

Both of you are right. It is just that, after all, visual novels are a niche genre and I think it would be nice if other people would try it. But reading that a game is a porn VN makes you think that all the game is about it - I remember that I didn't play it until recently because I read the same on other websites and only after reading some comments on the VN thread here I decided to play it, and it was a great decision.
Anyway I close the off topic, since this thread is about FGO - I would have liked to read the story of this game (even though I suppose it isn't as good as FSN becing mostly a gache game), but mobile games really are not something for me.. I stop to play a mobile game after 2-3 days.

Reminder that Tsukihime was the superior VN.
#JusticeForArcueid

I read it with terrible sex scenes and that's how I forever will remember it.

I know a dude who spent $1000 for this png, gacha is serious shit nowadays.

The terrible sex scenes have been removed from the latest version of the game with the Realta Nua update so this argument is outdated. Strangely the mobile app has more lewd character designs than the original eroge VN.

What sex scenes, don't tell me they were from this gacha game?

1) Gaming in general. Fate/Grand Order is perhaps the biggest game period in Japan right now, and it's doing pretty decently internationally.

2) To put it in simple turns FGO is a turn based game in which you assemble a party of 6 characters to fight enemies three at a time, using a sort of deck system where each character has 5 attack cards shuffled into a 15 card deck to cycle through, using the characters skills to provide buffs and debuffs and the like.

Those "weird scenes" are from Fate/Stay Night. A visual novel and the start of the "Fate" series. Which was published in 2004. At the time, the market assumption for PC games, especially Doujin PC games was that they would be "eroges", as in erotica. As such tons of such of such games had shoehorned sex scenes within them. FSN was no exception. Once it became a bigger hit and got re-relased, these scenes were removed and retconed away. They're notable for being weird, badly written, and kind of out character. Especially notable once interviews showed that the author of the rest of the work didn't even write them. Not to meniton that they're a objectively small part of the story in terms of screentime.

The Game from the OP is Fate Grand Order (FGO), a free to play Gatcha RPG, and yes, it's generating billions in revenue despite being FTP.

FGO is a part of the "Fate" franchise. The Fate franchise originally started back in the mid 2000's with a japanese exclusive visual novel called "Fate/Stay Night", which was originally published as an Eroge (erotic game). The sex scenes were not the focus of the game originally and in the latest versions of the game they've been removed partially because they were so legendarily terrible.

Hmm I see, so you don't have to start with Stay Night?
The anime they mentioned is an adaptation of one of the 3 VN routes. Many people get into the series through various ways but like any series, going from the start would be best. In an ideal world you'd read the VN, but some tend to be rather averse to that idea. It's unfortunately a little difficult and confusing to explain how to get into Stay Night through anime just because of the history of its adaptations. The best way I can explain it is the VN is something of a horror/mystery, with slice of life. It has 3 separate routes that are meant to be played sequentially, each one examining the themes of the story and drawing out the mystery of the setting/characters. It goes Fate-> Unlimited Blade Works-> Heaven's Feel. You don't really get the complete idea of the series without seeing all the routes. I think the VN is very interesting in this regard.

Fate route can be viewed through the Fate/stay night (2006) anime. It incorporates some elements from other routes but is otherwise the only way to see that route. Despite its somewhat poor reputation online for quality it has genuine merits of its own. UBW route has an anime from a different studio, Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works (2014). As the studio animated the prequel series prior to this, it ends up having some references to it that will probably confuse you. The same studio is also finishing its trilogy series of films adapting the Heaven's Feel route. A little rushed in that it loses a lot of some characters' moments, but still high quality and importantly it is the only way to watch that route.

Of course if you do play the VN there are great install guides online that show you how to apply the patch based on your preference whether you want voice acting, censoring the H content, etc. Sorry for the intimidating post! Some make fun of Fate for being confusing to get into, but really it's just important context to guide you.
