Sony Confirms PS Plus Subscription Stacking Has Been Blocked

Conversion rates for consumers with pre-paid codes revealed
Update: As pointed out by reader Fuzzymonkeyfunk, and corroborated by Push Square, Sony's support department appears to be confirming that the company has deactivated the ability to redeem pre-paid PS Plus cards to prevent subscription stacking. This is, presumably, because PS Plus and PS Now subscribers will be upgraded to PS Plus Premium for the duration of their longest membership.

A support email explains: "I have checked the voucher and your account and can conclude that as of now there is a temporarily deactivated function for PS Plus/PS Now subscriptions which does not allow for stacking of either membership on already active memberships.

"This is only temporary and as soon as we have more information about we will let our players know, for more information regarding news for the new launch of our service please check out our blog."

As of the time of writing, it's still possible to purchase pre-paid PS Plus cards from a variety of major retailers, including Amazon. However, Shop To does appear to have pulled the product from its storefront.

We've contacted Sony for comment.
This was buried in the PS+ issues thread and I thought it was threadworthy.

You can read about how the PS+/PS Now trick in the PS+ stacking thread.

Important to note that this news is coming nearly 2 full days after people started having issues redeeming codes.

Two full days of people buying PS+ codes because Sony said themselves that if you have concurrent PS NOW and PS+ subscriptions, your account would be converted to PS+ Premium for the longer duration of the two.

A lot of people spent a lot of money buying PS+ codes only to be fucked now because of Sony's failure to communicate.

Yeah, so even if this is just a big or technical issue the silence from Sony is inexcusable.

Renewals as well it seems. Someone in the PS+ issues thread ran out of time the other day and can't renew to play online.
Hence why it doesn't make sense for them to do this intentionally before putting a very big game on their service (Fifa 22), it's likely just them being incompetent regarding communication and solving whatever issue this is.
Hopefully they fix it sooner rather than later.

Edit: The rabbit hole to where these threads goes down to are always quite the scene to see, impressive.

Microsoft can afford to lose money on the $1 Game Pass deal. I don't think the same is true of Sony. Anyone who wants these new tiers to be anything close to a proper Game Pass competitor needs to understand that Sony isn't going to be willing to lose money on something like this to build a solid base. Want the service? Pay for it.

Sony isn't allowing anyone to add more than 1 year of PS+ to any account. You can do up to that, although some users are probably having issues with that due to lag in the backend of figuring out when your sub expires, etc.

Its lame and the shitty part is how terrible Sony is at telling everyone whats going on. You can buy 5 1 year PS+ codes on amazon, gamestop, etc with no errors but when you try to redeem them you get a bizarre error. Not "We aren't allowing people to redeem more than 1 year right now. Here's why." just a generic, vague, "something went wrong, try again later!"

it works perfectly fine if you have 0 days of PS+ right now and you can redeem a single year so its not a backend error or anything, its absolutely deliberate by Sony to prevent stacking.

Lol I tried to extend my PS+ from the PS store today before the news broke. Not a big deal I'll just pay the asking price if I like the service.

Funny to see this when Xbox is practically giving GP away for awhile just to get people on board.

thats why this issue is strange and why people are jumping to conclusions but either way Sony officially Needs to come out and say if they are stopping stacking or if it's an issue.

Has Sony officially commented on this yet? The silence if not isn't doing them any favors.

What you're describing here is a disappointment and clearly lacking vs the competition, but excusable.

What's not fucking excusable or even remotely acceptable is Sony continuing to sell PS+ subscriptions for nearly 2 days without communicating that these subscriptions can't actually be activated on top of current subscriptions after stating that if you have concurrent PS NOW and PS+ subscriptions, your account would be converted to PS+ Premium for the longer duration of the two.

Zero defense for that. Fuck Sony.

If they're already preventing stacking like this, the profit margins must be pretty tight on this service.

These people are paying for it. They are buying codes which aren't redeemable.

If they want to lock down stacking loopholes, cool, it's their service - but it feels like any time there's a major rollout or policy shift at Playstation these days, they start giving off shady used car salesman energy.

Another move that arrogant Sony has been making tbh

They really don't know what they're doing and floundering.

So either the people who don't know about this and will be buying those cards will be fucked, or stores who still have stock of the cards will be fucked. Either way, people are getting fucked. Come the fuck on, Sony.

While I'm not quite to the extent they are in frustrations, Sony is not allowing people to extend *any* subscription, even many that have lapsed. It's not just people trying to take advantage of a potential loop hole.

How is buying a PS+ code and wanting to activate it "gaming" anything? How is literally going by what Sony advertises (that if you have PS Now and PS+, it will be converted into PS+ Premium for the longer subscription of the two) gaming anything?

Stop defending a multi-billion dollar corporation over shitty practices and terrible communication. They aren't your friend.

The weirdest thing about this is its affecting everything with renewal. There was a user here and a couple on Reddit that reported they can't sub to Plus as a new sub at all. Auto renew cant be turned on or off on subscription management. You can't buy a PS Now or PS Plus sub from the website or console. What the hell is going on, why would Sony torpedo all of this?

Nothing, which is the biggest issue. They just need to say something and let the cards fall.
Latest Sony Support messages seem to have been pretty consistent in saying that the feature has been intentionally disabled temporarily and to wait on more news about the new services, but that's pretty much it from them.
Oof, whether this is a technical issue or an intentional limitation (support messaging leans towards intentional), they need to come out and officially say something. People finding out via other pissed off people is probably the worst way this information can spread.

This feels like a huge bug that someone didnt notice before it went live. Has Sony confirmed that this is intended behavior?

They're not paying the intended cost for the subscription; they're clearly exploiting a conversion path to the new service. Frankly, I'm surprised Sony didn't immediately get out in front of this. I mean, surely Sony isn't completely oblivious to the $1 Game Pass deal. It's horrendously stupid of them to even allow stacking. They should've taken a snapshot of current prepaid subscription lengths and maybe allowed people to stack a single year beyond that out of generosity, but yeah, the fact that Sony isn't launching the other tiers (and, hence, can't do an immediate conversion for everyone) is really going to screw them if they let this slide. Sony doesn't have the money for this, and people hoping to get ten or so years of this service that's potentially going to tank Sony's profits is probably in for a rude awakening when the extra tiers are drastically altered or eliminated down the road. At the very least, I expect any money Sony loses from this to really put a damper on the deals Sony can make with publishers to fill out the games catalogs on these better tiers.

It's been nearly two days, news outlets have picked up on it, and Sony remains silent. If this was some odd technical issue you sure think they would've made a statement on it long ago.

If Sony doesnt want people to stack up, Sony should do a hard cap like Microsoft does. I'm pretty sure you can't have more than 3 years of Gamepass at any point in time, regardless of the sub tier or how much you're paying for it. At least it's fairer instead of letting some people stack up on 10 fucking years of PS+ then suddenly going "oops you cant stack up at all uwu".
