Since they own the IP they can continue the series just not the first one, at least that's what I'm understanding.
As I mentioned, they could buy out of the contract with Microsoft and get the publishing rights for the first game (or sell the IP to MS). Only having one half is kind of useless for both parties.

Spider-man studio. Poor Ratchet & Clank.

Congrats to everyone though. It was always a close relationship throughout the years so this makes a whole lot of sense.

I already thought they were under the Sony umbrella.

What will the real world impacts to consumers likely be?

Pretty much...

no new non-PS exclusive Sunset Overdrive sequel
no new VR games that won't be exclusive to PSVR

everything else will be barely noticeable if at all. Insomniac tried their hand at building up their own IP's. Yet haven't been as successful as they were with Sony's (Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Spiderman)

Nah. The tone in those threads were a lot more hostile than the Sony fanboy circle jerk going on in here.

Just goes to show you how few Xbox fans their are here.

Or, that maybe people are still hesitant about MS as a publisher?

They screwed over the developers for the Phantom Dust reboot, as well as SWERY with D4.

They abandoned a lot of developers to help pay for Kinect marketing (Aces, Lionhead)

They pushed for everything to be GaS - Fable Legends, Halo series, Forza, etc,

Under their care, a beloved studio floudnered, and made basically nothing worthy of note for like 20 years (Rare)

They shut down Ensemble because they were "the RTS studio", and that wasn't the direction they wanted to go, despite not letting Ensemble work on anything but RTSes (They had pitches for everything from racing to MMOs)

They have studios that exist to to never work on new IPs, just like EA's sport studios (343i, The Coatillion, Mojang, Turn 10, Undead Labs)

They basically have an almost EA track level with studios. When a studio gets bought by MS, I generally consider them to have an expiration date, unless they work on one series for the rest of their time. So basically, I just don't trust MS as a publisher. While Phil seems to be saying the right things, it'll be a while until we see results, and if he retires, or otherwise leaves, it could mean a huge disaster, since it seems like he is the only one pushing for things to not be as horrible.

I hope for a new resistance. Maybe set in Russia during the initial chimeran invasion they could do something really gritty with Russia closing its borders or maybe after the events of 3 where earth's forces mount an offensive on the chimeran homeland.

Although considering the current market a resistance type FPS probably won't be that popular.

Whoa that's crazy. Would love a $40 download-only Resistance 3 sequel.

Fantastic Studio. Now will be one of the flagships.

Congrats Insomniac, stability is a great thing.

All the "at least it wasn't on stage" people are laughable. You all would be more hype if they announced this right after a trailer for Spider-Man 2 at E3.

It's inevitable. The market is increasingly volatile and competitive, but most of all, expensive. Maintaining a studio of 300+ people (counting both studios on each coast) isn't cheap, and banking the livelihood of your entire business on hopefully securing another publisher for your next deal is...pretty terrifying in todays economy.

The days of independent AAA studios are fast approaching extinction because it's just not financially feasible. For me personally, I'm not cheering for the acquisition of the studio, more so the secured stability for hundreds of people who have families & themselves to support. I can't be mad at this decision, corporate consolidation or not.
That's not really true. This is because of macro business trends, increased competition for content in our new Services reality, and the total financial control over rights and assets vertical integration brings in the media realm.

These studios aren't suddenly impossible to operate independently from a cost perspective. This is happening because studios are an important asset in the greater war going on between major conglomerates over gaming.

Sunset Overdrive was one of three multiplatform console games they made in like two decades. You're vastly overstating the importance of a couple of side games, all of which flopped. Their success was always found WITH Sony.

Just be honest, you only complain when a developer is bought who won't be making games for Playstation anymore. I loved Insomniac's games for Rift and I loved Sunset Overdrive so while you don't care since you can still play their games on the PS don't act like people who play other platforms have zero reason to be disappointed with this. You're just coming across as hypocritical.

Who owns the Sunset Overdrive is rights?

Insomniac, it was one of the reasons they worked with Microsoft.

Now we'll ignore the part where Sony's closed 6 studios in the last decade or so.

I mean frankly Sony has a lot more garbage attached to their name then MS Studios (XGS) does. Also isn't Turn 10 doing something not racing nor forza already.

Cool news but Insomniac has been all about Sony for generations (with a quick detour for Sunset Overdrive).

They also had a a run as an EA partner with FUSE (haha), some VR games, etc. Insomniac was a true independent studio creating games for multiple platforms for years, the same cannot be said about Playground Games, who were, for the entirety of their existence, created Xbox-only games.

Ok Fuse xD

And in the future, they will hopefully also create VR games for PSVR and PSVR2.
With enough money from Sony, I am sure Insomniac will make great VR games.

This is as good as a fit Playground games is for MS, honestly happy Insomniac have a home at least, and Sony will continue to invest in thier talent.

Ted is getting to close that retirement age, and they're the most valuable they've ever been with Spider-man. If there was anytime to sell, it was now.

Imagine having a career as successful as Ted Price
Found a studio, create several hit IPs over the course of decades, retain your independence throughout that entire time and eventually sell you company to another company with which you have had an extremely successful business relationship for many years, probably for a shit ton of money, while not losing any significant amount of creative freedom.

Because the circumstances are extremely different. Insomniac has, for the better part of its existence, almost exclusively made games for Sony platforms and their next project (Spider-Man 2) was also PS exclusive. As such, the acquisition isn't really taking anything AWAY from other platforms unless you're one of the, like, seven people why ONLY game on Oculus Rift.

People were upset about something like Double Fine because that means a studio that mostly makes multiplatform games is now only making exclusives. The situations are different so the reactions will be different as well.

Except for you know one of the best Microsoft exclusive games this gen. Insomniac was clearly willing to work with Microsoft if they wanted to. They had numerous games on Microsofts platform this gen. That's the whole point of them being independent.

It's ridiculous to say that it isn't taking away something from Microsoft owners when they now don't have any chance to get any insomniac games on their system.

It's much closer to a Double Fine than a Playground Games.

What are the odds that Insomniac helps Sony in regards to what tech they want for PSVR2? I doubt they will stop VR development.

So did Psygnosis / Studio Liverpool many years ago. Destruction Derby, G-Police, Colony Wars, Alundra, Formula 1, Wipeout etc.

I'll say it again, let's hope Insomniac don't end up like Psygnosis / Studio Liverpool. (Once producer of great games, to become a shadow of its former self and then closed).

That could happen with or without the studio being acquired. Are independent studios impervious to becoming a shadow of their former selves and closing?

Who owns the Sunset Overdrive is rights?

Insomniac Studios

When Microsoft told Insomniac it could retain the rights to Sunset Overdrive, the companies were on their way to signing a deal.

"We pitched it a few different places, and it was really important to [Insomniac CEO] Ted [Price] that we own the IP, so some of the conversations broke down over that," Sunset Overdrive co-creator Marcus Smith told IGN in an interview. "With Microsoft, they just came in very energetic and excited to work with Insomniac, period."

I will never cheer for acquisitions but they've partnered together for like 20 years, they know each other inside out so it's a good fit.

Ratchet and Clank sequel next please!

What a surprise. A studio that has been making games exclusively for what 15-20 years is bought up by Sony. Sucker Punch will be next.

Where does all the love for SO come from? Game sold like shit.

25 years as an independent studio is an incredible accomplishment, the pay check TP is getting for this has to be insane, INSANE. Well deserved.

Yep, this has to be one of the biggest studio acquisitions $ wise. I would venture and say more than 10 times whatever Sony paid Jason and Gavin for Naughty Dog.

This is a big hit for Oculus. Now Sony have several teams (Burbank -Spider-Man, North Carolina - Ratchet and all the VR specialists too).
