PlayStation is opening a whole new development studio in Malaysia in 2020 - the company's first studio in Southeast Asia.

YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia in Malaysia announced the good news, saying:

"With this establishment, Malaysia will be working closely with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios to create more opportunities for the local and regional games industry. Together, we will work to uplift creative talents in Malaysia and even establish a partnership with our local educational partners. This is to ensure that accelerated growth of the industry in our country will be supported."

The studio will join the ranks of well-known developers like Guerrilla Games, Bend Studio, Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Japan Studio, Santa Monica Studio and more under the SIE Worldwide Studios family.

IE Worldwide Studios Malaysia will not develop new IP of its own. Instead, it will provide art and animation services to developers for PlayStation 5 exclusive games. PlayStation CEO and President Jim Ryan added:

"Impressive talent, a vibrant game ecosystem, and support from the government are key reasons why we have decided to take our partnership with Malaysia to the next level."

Proud to be a Malaysian for this. Also one of the best ministers since he also enforced double the internet speed for the same price.

Nothing against the decision but I'd like to see them eventually get to make their own titles. Right now this seems more like formalizing a system of capitalist exploitation. Hopefully it does lead to bigger and better things and they won't be used only for asset work forever.

Exploitation based on what?

Oh that's awesome! Nice to see more talent from other areas getting a chance to shine. Hopefully it leads to them eventually going on to expand and become full fledged studios making their own games in the future

Exploitation based on what?

In 2014, the watchdog organization Verité released a study on migrant workers in the electronics sector in Malaysia. Among a sample of more than 400 foreign electronics workers, at least 32 percent were, by Verité's definition, forced to work against their will. According to the report, "these results suggest that forced labor is present in the Malaysian electronics industry in more than isolated incidents, and can indeed be characterized as widespread."

That same year, the U.S. State Department ranked Malaysia "Tier 3" in its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, the worst rating possible, alongside countries such as Iran and North Korea. This rating is reserved for countries that commit egregious human-rights abuses. The next year the country was upgraded to a "Tier 2 Watch List" country, and then a full-fledged Tier 2 country in 2017—upgrades that many felt were unwarranted, especially because in 2015 graves of upwards of 130 suspected human-trafficking victims were found at the country's border with Thailand. "It made a mockery," Shawn MacDonald, the CEO of Verité, said of the State Department's revision. Malaysia had "literally done nothing—if anything a slide backwards."

Based on their need to be woke and edgy

Why don't you sit down Executive Taxi. Hopefully Sony is strict about standards, but if anything your post is the one trying to be edgy.

I read before about the mass grave but no further news probably because the ex regime is still in power. Too bad we didn't get a follow up news.
