Sony is abandoning its PS3 Legacy while Nintendo works to preserve its last gen

With news that God of War 4 sold 3.1 million copies in 3 days, it's easy to forget that back in the days of the PS3 Sony exclusives were lucky to even reach a million in lifetime sales. While Sony first party was putting on a constant stream of quality exclusives, very few of them made any sales impact. While put together, these games gave the impression of a strong exclusive library which helped Sony market the PS4 as the place the go for exclusives, individually these exclusives made little impact despite their quality.

Nintendo faced the same problems during the Wii U generation. They released quality first party titles that were barely played as they were on a console that most had ignored. But Nintendo didn't just move on, they made sure that all the work that had gone into their games will be experienced by putting out well made re-releases on their more successful Switch console.

So why isn't Sony giving their library another chance on the PS4? With the work that developers have put into these games, Sony owes them another shot to have their work be seen and enjoyed. Especially since many blame Sony and their poor marketing during the PS3 era for the failure of these titles.

So lets look back at Sony's PS3 Exclusive library and look at the titles that deserve another chance.

SALES
: 180,000 sold in the USA after 1 month

IGN said:
Insomniac clearly wanted to make this game a more harrowing and personal experience, and by focusing its attention on a smaller, more personal story within the invasion, it has succeeded without question. This is a surprisingly emotional cinematic roller-coaster of a campaign that never lets up.

SALES: 200,000 sold in 1 month

Gamesradar said:
Tokyo Jungle is an addictive roguelike, constantly offering new surprises and challenging you to perfect your routes through an abandoned city as you hunt for food and mates to keep your species alive. Its simple gameplay and plethora of unlockable animals means you'll get the hang of things quickly, but constantly be striving to get that next piece of the puzzle.

SALES: 370,000 sold in the US after 1 month

Game Revolution said:
inFAMOUS 2 is focused without being linear and wild without ever coming completely unhinged. It has all the exhilarating derring-do of Saturday morning do-gooders but with the wickedly wry smile of those who stay home on Sunday to watch Saturday's fare all over again.

SALES: Launched at 17th place on UK charts, uncharted on the NPD

Eurogamer said:
The intense aerial encounters are as addictive as ever, and the Build and Battle system generally makes combat more interesting and unpredictable. The foundation of the game is rock solid and it's safe to say LightBox Interactive has delivered one of the most entertaining PS3 multiplayer games released for quite some time.

SALES: 221,000 sold in the US after 1 month.

EGM said:
I have to admit that I f***ing loved this game. I really wished they would've skipped the bulk of the major changes to the game's narrative, but from a pure gameplay standpoint, it's arguably my favorite Twisted Metal title to date. The controls are on point, the level design's at or above anything else the series has produced, and (when it works) the multiplayer's nonstop gameporn that'll offer dozens of hours of replay value for anyone who gives it the time.

SALES: ???

IGN said:
The beauty of Puppeteer is that its charm and its execution overshadow everything else. For its occasional long-windedness, the story is quite captivating. For its intermittent cheap deaths, its overarching forgiving nature rises to the fore. For its occasionally frustrating platforming, its scissors-based traversal is a breath of fresh air. Puppeteer does a really nice job of overwhelming us with so much well-executed eccentricity, not much else matters. And frankly, there’s nothing else like it.

There's many more that I didn't list like Sly 4, Motorstorm, Siren, Folklore, and more. So what do you think? Should Sony give these games another chance, or let them be forgotten in the depths of the PS3 extensive library? Is remastering Uncharted/TLoU enough?

If they thought they would be significantly profitable Sony would have considered re-releasing them already. I'm sure they're not done yet, and we probably will see some of the games you listed on PS4 at some point.

The first infamous games should definitely get remastered for this gen, as well as resistance. the resistance series as whole, deserves another chance.

Imagine Sony having the balls to re-release their last gen games at full price while delisting them on the previous console's store. Yikes.

We'll talk about Nintendo preserving WiiU software when they do something about Pikmin 3, W101 and Mario Maker

Any particular reason you choose Nintendo as a model when Xbox is doing BC right and proper without forcing you to buy a remaster?

More remasters? Eh... in case you haven’t noticed, we’ve had remasters coming out of our ears since the beginning of the gen. Sure, some of these could and maybe should see releases, but the concept of this thread, that Sony aren’t as interested in preserving their games from the last gen by releasing them again this gen is misguided.

I can't believe people want old game remastered more than new good games. Remaster is only great if it makes player see it then want to play the new version not the old version.

This plus PS Now.

Wait.... what?

OP, your post is so poorly researched and factually incorrect that I can't in fact take it seriously.

You preface your discussion on a topic about BC, with a false claim about the lifetime sales of PS3 exclusive games and then restrict your actual quoted sales data to the first few months of sales for a bunch of fairly obscure titles in a single region...?!?

You should re-think this OP completely before you become a victim of a thread backfire.

Xbox is the only console doing "preservation" right this gen, not Nintendo. PS5 will (probably) be BC with PS4 and we already got a crapload of PS3 remasters on PS4.

Furthermore with PS Now and the constantly improving PS3 Emulation, PC can access those games too. They won't be lost to time. And anyone really interested in those games can buy a PS3 anyway because they're still around.

Nintendo despite having indie support still needs bigger games on the Switch and leveraging the Wii U library is a good way to do this.

Those games in the OP are not iconic. But missing out on a Captain Toad game? Toad is iconic, Donkey Kong is iconic.

What’s OP smoking? The Last of Us, God of War 3, and the Uncharted games have all been brought over, while Shadow of the Colossus was remastered. Even Gravity Rush from Vita showed up to PS4.

I actually have a somewhat cynical view of Nintendo's approach to Wii U games on Switch. They are old games, with minor upgrades, sold for more than the original release price in some instances. The pricing just rubs me the wrong way.

Anyway, the same approach wouldn't work for PS3 games on PS4. They need quite a bit more work in most cases to meet the presentation standards PS4 users are accustomed to. I do think some more PS3 games could use PS4 ports though (I'd love to give Puppeteer a try) provided they are priced appropriately.

Yep, I agree. MS is doing it the right way...free and good. Why would you want Sony to copy Nintendo? Makes no sense being forced to buy games that you own again vs getting somewhat new and improved games that you already own.

Ugh not really? I don’t understand Sony did what Nintendo has done by remastering some games like TNDC, TLOU, etc

Plus the CPU change from Cell to Jaguar is far more complex than Switch ARM vs low clocked Wii U CPU.

I’d like to play PS3 games on my PS4 but it’s far more complex than many seem to think.

Wow! Not porting your entire catlog of old games is apparently "abandoning your legacy" now.
All of this.

I'm not sure this comparison has merit when there are PS3 exclusives that have sold more copies than there are Wii Us in existence.

Not as a trend or as any widespread modus operandi. Systematic remasters are a thing of this generation, not the SNES era, and Sony is the manufacturer that started it.
Even then, nope. Nintendo had a whole line of games on the Gameboy Color that was nothing but enhanced Gameboy, Super Gameboy, and NES games.
Nintendo had the New Play Control line on Wii back in 2007, long before Sony put out their first remaster.

For good or for bad, this is a trend that Nintendo started.

Then, let's talk about how the PS3 has sold approx 90 million consoles. Close to it at least. And was on the market a few years after next gen started.

vs. what the Wii U sold. And how long it was on the market.

If someone didn't get those games on PS3, well, they just didn't want them.

OP, what is your doing....

The WiiU was a huge failure in terms of sales. Bringing its best titles to a system people actually bought is probably a smart move financially. They sell more and the cost of porting is (probably) relatively inexpensive. Or at least inexpensive in comparison to developing something from scratch. It also allows them to bolster the library of the Switch I'm between new releases.

That said, doesn't Sony have PS Now? Isn't a huge (or ateast decent) part of the PS3 catalogue available via that service?

Exactly, the same company that makes you buy the same games in every system that comes out (seems to be changing with Switch, but still).
Yeah, the same company that has backwards compatibility in almost all of the consoles be it GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U.

Also, I prefer to pay a minimal valor than to lost all of my games like I did in ps3 to ps4

We're getting a mix of new IPs and sequels of great "old" IPs. That's the Sony way. Why should the develop sequels and sequels and sequels forever? New IPs are great. It's a healthy mix. Thanks to that, we got gems like Until Dawn, Gravity Rush, Tearaway, Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Detroit Become Human, and many more. Their current strategy is perfect and it works well for us games and for Sony.

Regarding remasters: We already got a few remasters and remakes. Maybe a few more (Demon's Souls, Infamous and Puppeteer would be nice) but that's it.

Too many ports!

Not enough ports!

Can we come to a consensus on this topic so we can move on?

What I dont understand...

Why do you only write about the sales in the us?
Why only in the first month?
Why dont you add titles that were sucessful?
What is your point?

Games like Puppeteer or Tokyo Jungle were never these big games and are better for the Asia/european region.

------

I have to agree that I would be happy to see Resistance come back (Remaster or Resistance 4)
But besides that, I dont care for any other game in your list and would not play them, even if they would be free and bc like on Xbox.
Well and there is always PSnow and I think the games on your list are in for just 10$ you can play them all and more...
