Lowest Q2 hw shpments for PS4 so far. Probably combination of slowing demand and overshipping during Q1. Good results though (like usual).

2.8M, down from 3.9M. Last year was a powerful quarter, though, with Fortnite bump and Spider-Man to fuel hardware sales. This decline seems quite natural, as we have less strong software moving units and a natural decline pattern towards next gen.

Overall, hardware seems very healthy still, which is great!

PS2 still dominating, it's funny seeing the Wii on that list amongst all of the PS consoles.

So they roughly shipped 25% less consoles compared to this period last year. That seems like a healthy drop given the launch of the PS5 in a year from now.
Software sales could be a tad better but I assume are still ahead of the competition from Nintendo.

Never thought I'd see another 100 million seller for another generation or two after the last one. PS4 is nuts, the momentum going into PS5 is going to be a frenzy.

Oh. Didn't expect them to lower hardware forecast again. Lowering revenue and profit forecasts makes sense if The Last of Us II gets delayed from this FY to the next.

I'm surprised that the software ratio is about the same for PS2 and PS4. Considering that the cheapest I could get a game for back in 2002 was AU$40, which is almost AU$60 in today's dollars, whereas today I can buy awesome AAA games from a few years ago for a tenner on sale.

With the hard as hell of messy start the PS3 had, yet it managed to hold a spot in top 5 best selling consoles of all time... very impressive.

And Congratulations to Sony on PS4, truly magnificent console.

My guess would be that PS2 had more titles that were shorter and PS4 has less titles but that are longer and Service oriented so people stick with fewer games.

I still wonder if they could've pushed the PS3 up to 100m if they'd been more aggressive with pricedrops. But toward the end it just seems like they they were just looking to get onto the PS4 and didn't really care about the PS3's numbers much anymore.

That's a good point. For every boring old fart like me who has bought a few dozen single player games, there are probably a few people who just buy FIFA each year or play something like Destiny or Fortnite.

As evidence by God of War & Spiderman exclusive content can still move hardware even this late into the gen. But that's quite a revision a down. It gone from 16m initial to 13.5. So hardware is slowing even beyond there expectations. Does that mean there not going to be aggressive with deals this holiday season?

That software sold number is wild, does all ps hardware really sold more software than even nintendo handheld?

Handhelds have traditionally way lower software tie ratios than home consoles. DS actually has by far the best (around 6.2). GBA, GB and PSP are all under 5 and 3DS barely above 5.

Well even at the moment they are having quite aggressive deals in Europe so it's bit weird (just checked one of the biggest local retailers (Finland) and for example there is deal of PS4 Pro with COD MW at 329€). Maybe they just expect demand to slow so much that even being aggressive with deals doesn't help enough.

Holy shit, didn't think they would cut the FY down to below 14M.

Pretty much lines up with what's expected and what I've been saying though. This year's sales are down massively from 2018 and it made no sense how they shipped 3.2M in Q2. Pretty much an over shipment.

We are going to see under 6M shipped next quarter.

Did the PS2 not have the Classics lineup though? I can't speak to Australia but can talk about the UK. You could get games in that lineuo for £10-£15.

I'm praying someone writes a book about this generation. To go from last with PS3 to the 2nd highest selling console of all time with PS4? Ridiculous.

Without being taken seriously in Japan, Xbox is never going to have the breath of library or install base of Sony's consoles. Hopefully MS can keep it closer this coming generation. If nothing else, MS is hungry and pushing the envelope with services and cross-play friendly platform which benefits us all, and it would be nice to see them rewarded for their efforts in the install base.

$399. And targeting 1080p w/ the correct spec.

Sony is so lucky they managed to have all 4 of their systems in the top five best selling systems of all time, including the top 3 entirely by themselves.

What luck.

PS4 has only what, 10-15 million in Japan? Its success comes from selling globally. Xbox has failed to penetrate markets besides North America and the UK in any meaningful way.

Not this again... We had discussions with Welfare and ZhugeEx about that and it seems, although this is repeated every now and then, this is not as clear as many hope.

We have the home console rank in this thread

  1. PS2 : > 155 million
  2. PS4 : 102.8 million
  3. PS1 : 102.49 million
  4. Wii : 101.63 million
  5. PS3 : 87.4 million

We had the Platinum lineup here for PS1/2, which brought games down to AU$40. Games are just so staggeringly cheap now, particularly when you factor in inflation. That's also comparing a physical "value" line to digital, so it's not exactly an equal comparison .

That's looking at it simplistically. I mean I want someone to write something like 'Console Wars' by Blake J. Harris (Great read!) about this generation. The intrigue is certainly there.
PS3 sold more than XB360, they were second that gen.

PS3 barely scraped by X360 on the strength of the RotW at the end of last gen. In US and UK, 360 was king and the Xbone still outsold PS4 those first two holiday seasons.
