Here is below the PS4 software sales since FY2015, including the quarterly physical/digital split from FY2016 onward
(doesn't include "download only software titles" ; no data before FY15 because it was not provided)

jagTb0J.png

Now you can take a look below at the evolution of PS Plus subscribers and Software digital ratio over years

2PlMeIz.png

Here is now the Quarterly Physical Software Sales on PS4 since FY2016 (from April 2016 onward)
And the interesting stat : Sony's average gross margin per physical copy sold

For a $60 retail game, publishers have to pay about $7-10 to Sony as a license fee (publisher's gross margin ~ $33)
For its own first-party games, Sony's gross margin will be as high as ~ $40
When Sony's average gross margin is higher than $7-10, that's because it's inflated by the performance of its exclusives
  • Q1 FY16 (Apr-June 2016) : Uncharted 4 release
  • Q4 FY16 (Jan-Mar 2017) : Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Q1 FY18 (Apr-June 2018) : God of War & Detroit
  • Q1 FY19 (Apr-June 2019) : Days Gone
Q2 FY18 (July-Sept 2018) with Spider-Man didn't go higher (despite good performance), probably because of huge sales of annual sport titles (Madden/NBA 2K/FIFA) which lowered Sony's average gross margin

6kN74u8.png

Some stats of PlayStation in 2019 (calendar year) including data of previous years to contextualize
*Sell-in numbers (sold to retailers + digital sales) come from Sony's quarterly reports and don't include "download only software titles"
**Sell-through numbers (sold to customers via retail stores or PS Store) include "download only software titles" (unless otherwise specified)

This is the PlayStation Yearly Revenue & Operating Profit
I added Revenue in USD to give you an idea of what Revenue in JPY mean (therefore if Revenue USD don't follow the same growth than Revenue JPY, it's because of exchange rates)
  • 2019 is the 2nd biggest year ever for PlayStation with over $18.72B in Revenue and $2.35B in Op. Profit
la1Q8OI.png

Here is below the PS4 Yearly Hardware & Software Sell-in by Calendar Year (same graph with Sell-through numbers is also available)
  • More than 257 million games have been sold-through in 2019 (including "download only software titles")
    • 704 000 games sold to consumers each day on average (= 8.15 games sold-through each second)
    • 2nd highest yearly software sales (sell-through) for any platform in video game history
  • Over 109 million digital games were sold-through on PS Store in 2019 (doesn't include "download only software titles")
D6XGVob.png

With over 240m software sold-in last year, PS4 2019 entered the Top 10 Highest Yearly Software Sales (Sell-in) at #4
Below are the Top 10 and Top 15 Highest Yearly Software Sales :

Iw2mTAO.png

PlayStation Network generated over $12.48B in 2019 thanks to :
  • PlayStation Store ($9.28B) through Games and Add-on content (MTX, DLC, etc...) purchases
  • PS Services ($3.20B) with PS+ and PS Now
2019 is the 2nd highest revenue ever generated by PlayStation Network (#2 for PS Store ; #1 for Services) and during that year :
  • 103 million players each spent ~ $90.14 on average on the PlayStation Store*
  • about 40m PS+/PS Now subscribers spent ~ $6.66/month on average ($79.92/year)**
*calculated by the following formula : "Yearly Total Spending on PS Store" / "MAU at the end of the year"
**calculated by the following formula : "Yearly Network Services Revenue" / "Amount of PS+ & PS Now subscribers at the end of the year"

M5Dskbi.png

And to finish, the PS4 Hardware sell-through with a Breakdown by Region, one with raw numbers, the other one in %
As of end of 2019 :
  • US account for 30.4% of total PS4 units sold with ~ 32.2m

    • Japan : 8.3%
    • Rest of the World : 61.3%

I wonder if they'll speak about specific titles like Days Gone, Death Stranding, Medievil, and Concrete Genie. People are curious about those regardless of the outcome. I'm hoping that they'll update the sales of legacy titles as well, I'm interested in seeing where HZD stands now.

That's cool, 2019 was pretty weak for a AAA fan like myself, good to see PS4 going out with a bang as PS5 looms

Software down only 6m despite no God of War, Spidey or RDR2 tier game combo seems insane. Or am I reading that wrong?

That "2nd best year ever for PlayStation" is looking much more interesting when you consider that PlayStation had lots of amazing years in these +25 years!

How the hell did they managed to get the 2nd best year in the year the PS4 gen is practically dying?

That PS+ money must be insane

Edit. Also, holy shit, still tracking ahead of the PS2.

Sony should really price cut the PS4.

Espcially in poorer regions. Seems like the perfect time to keep hardware sales up and expand audience, as the regions develop over the next decade..

The locations where PS5 will be more of a slow burn.

PS4 sales must be really slowing this year in anticipation of next gen. Will be interesting to see
A. A price drop on PS4 at the PlayStation meetin
Edit : or stay as is and deliver a well priced PS5
B. The effect or not it has on sales.

I'm surprised they haven't done it, but then again, the numbers are still stupidly good despite approaching saturation.

It's definitely way overpriced in Japan imo. When I lived there I really felt it.

Obviously margins are great but there's a lot to be said for having a budget option on the market also.

That physical/digital ratio :|
The end is near ;_;

It would be insane if they donn't release a cheaper diskdrive less version of PS5. The market is clearly ready.

Also where is the disk less PS4? They can get to 199 price tag with that cut probably.

isn’t it still an expensive box to make? They could do a chip shrink to 7nm but that may cost more than they think they’ll get back in sales. But I do think they need to do something if they want the traditional 10 year lifecycle for PS4

I'm surprised they lumped digital sales as games + add ons. Wish they separated it better in the pie charts.

I'd assume the Insomniac acquisition is factored in somewhere too. That'd be a decent amount used from PlayStation's reserves/profit.

Crazy sales.
Good job playstation!

I expect this year to be lower. I assume sales will slump due to next Gen consoles.

How were the ps3 sales in 2013 compared to previous years?

It'll happen as soon as 7nm wafers get a bit cheaper. PS4 most likely has massive price elasticity. They can drive god knows how many sales with $199 PS4.

Great results. The 20% decline isn't nearly so bad when you consider the absolute beast that was their 2018 figures. Considering the relative differences in game output between those years I would say that only a 20% decrease is quite stellar.

The PS4 is going out with a massive bang with its lineup of exclusives so I expect it to continue to perform strong. And yup, I think when all is said and done it will be gunning for the PS2s crown.

What a fantastic OP ArmGunar, very well done!
Those are crazy numbers for PSN.

I think Sony can get closer to 2018 revenue numbers just because of the sheer force of the end of gen software from 1st and 3rd party being stronger than 2019.
