i wish the gave a number for vita too, all we have are estimates.
crazy to think 3 out of 4 PS home consoles will end up selling more than 100 million.

Not bad for Sony's worst ever home console in terms of sales. It's actually my second favourite behind the ps4.
The ps4 will sell 130m+ and possibly more. It could actually outsell it by 50m+. I thought the ps3 would sell 90m+ near the end but it came up 2.5m short. It's legs post ps4 were short. The ps4 will fair better post ps5. Price is a key factor amongst others.

Yeah it's always weird to read that so many people say Sony lost the PS360 generation. It's very close and it looks like PS3 slightly outsold the 360. It was such a head to head race that I don't see a clear "winner".
Sony sold more hardware last gen by a short margin but I read attach rate was better on the 360 (more software sold).

a difference of ~3.4 millions when talking about ~85 millions is far behind?
What were the software sales like in that gen? I seem to remember the 360 used to win most of the multiplat sales at least in the first three to four years of the gen and it only began to equalise around 2012 because that is where MS and Sony make their money.

Well it's also handheld. GBA for example shipped ''only'' 377 million units of sw so not that much more. Another example is how DS is at 948 million for sw shipments. Lower than PS3 despite huge difference in hw sales.
In relation to the status quo Sony actually lost the generation.
She made less money (yeah, even less that that disaster of 360), almost killing her self and most importantly she lost a monopoly in one single gen.
Few millions more is not really a victor for the price paid
Well we don't know X360 numbers but from the data we have yes. DS is at 948 million and Wii at 920 million.
Luckily for them Xbox messed up so now they are back up to their crazy sized audience of 100 million+. Ps4 should hit around 130 when it's all done. Pretty good Id say. ANd still breaking records.
Just ensure PS5 launch is not a PS3 type fiasco and we will finally see what happens when a hugely successful PS doesn't screw up with it's sequal.

oh i guess you're right, attach rates for handhelds are usually lower than consoles.
I wouldn't say the very end it was losing lots but overall it was a huge sinkhole.

Yeah but xbox was launched earlier and had a sales lead for longer so that only makes sense.
The one i always find funny is them saying "It took Sony years to catch up to 360 so it wasnt a success", ignoring the fact that PS3 was outselling 360 from day 1, launch aligned.
Yes the PS3 lost Sony a tonne of money but it is also going to be the 5th best selling console of all time and kept Sony relevant and made people excited for the PS4 which made all of those PS3 losses back this year alone.
Yup, both generation started with a player committing seppouku, but PS4 went beyond a simple Xbox suicide
Did it pass the Wii? I always assumed the Wii was the highest selling console of the generation just because I don't know a single person that didn't have one but never actaully heard about whether that was true or not.
It's still technically debatable since we do not have updated figures for Xbox 360, but it is unlikely
I wouldn't say it was "far behind" there may be a few million in between but they look like they're in the same ballpark.

Didn't Microsoft announce a new Xbox 360 at E3 2015 that looked similar to the Xbox One?
They are probably close when it comes to sw sales. I would actually give small edge to X360 if I had to guess. it sold way more in US and UK and those regions buy more games per person than for example Japan.
We already knew this for years :) PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 with a couple of millions. And the PS3 launched 1 year later. Still very impressive for a $599 monster at launch ;D
