Your absolutely right, when I was in Tokyo 2 years ago for TGS, Xperia had their own booth at TGS show and it was very present at Yodabashi and Bic Camera. The most common devices you see people using in the train are iPhones, Xperias and Walkmans.

But I wonder since the Xperia is doing good in Japan why did they screw them over with 64GB memory for Xperia 1..

The way Sony was adamant about holding on to their smartphone division I was certain it would relate to utilizing them as an in-house R&D resource for 5G and other mobile related matters.

I read the article with that second argument/quote. Really it's nothing more than "mobile is the future so we should have a stake", disregarding that they are basically non-existant in the mobil-market and have no hope or strategy of improving their numbers. Younger generations' first touch point is not going to be an Xperia. Yoshida also says "We see smartphones as hardware for entertainment and a component necessary to make our hardware brand sustainable," . Problem is that brand-recognition of Xperia and Sony in the mobile-market is again pretty much non-existant and has been for years.

Well take PlayStation for example. 5G is going to play a huge part in their future plans with PS Now eventually expanding to mobile, remote play becoming more prevalent on mobile and the possibility of them releasing a future handheld that can access these functions (just speculation there of course). If Sony didn't have an in-house mobile team then either SIE is going to have to take on people who specialize in the mobile sphere and 5G to help them in their efforts, or they can go to Sony Mobile and utilize their extensive experience to help them achieve their goals.

Having an in-house team of specialists is invaluable when you have so many divisions that could utilize them when they have a related projected. Not to mention once Sony gets their affairs in order for mobile and get their new path settled there's nothing saying they can't begin expansions once more. Me, I'm hoping they do have some sort of collaboration with PlayStation to get the successor to the Xperia Play out in the form of a PlayStation Phone that has physical controls for PS Now and Remote Play access.

Yea, when they mentioned the focus of entertainment the push for 5G makes even more sense. They would rather have their own product at the forefront showing off the capabilities within their ecosystem even if it's in addition to supporting other 5G devices.

This site has camera samples from the Xperia 1. Some are full resolution and what we are able to see shows a very good level of detail even in low light situations. When you click on an image click on where it says "Zoom in the image" on the right to get the full size. We should be expecting more hand on impressions and media in the coming days as the phone begins to land in various regions.

The biggest problem I've found with buying an Xperia in the US so far is that the lack of marketshare has made it hard to get your warranty honored. Last I checked I have to find a certified third party partner to do repairs because of the lack of official infrastructure.

I decided to live with my slightly cracked screen at that point.

Sony phones are awesome - but the 6 month release cycle is ridiculous, it's out of date as soon as it's in your hand.

That's why I stopped buying Sony phones - I loved them too.

I loved my Sony tablet for a minute, then I realized that it had been abandoned like 10 months after release or less. I'd never buy another Sony mobile device.

Sony Mobile simply doesn't have the manpower to support that many devices post-launch. I think they've said so themselves in interviews years ago.

I had the Z3 Compact.

I don't remember when I got it, but here's my logic..

The tablet was announced Sept 2014. The last OS version it got was Marshmallow, which released on 10/5/15. Sony is slow as hell so it didn't actually see Marshmallow until 4/27/16. To me that's essentially a year of support.. just stretched out by their long-ass release schedule.

Nougat released 8/22/16 but wasn't made available for this tablet.. despite Z3's being used by Sony's Android N dev preview.

So I see this as multiple failures.. First, it was an extremely short support timeline (2 OS upgrades).. and second they took nearly a year to get Marshmallow out. Nougat was 4 months away by the time that Sony users got Marshmallow.

I'm primarily an Apple guy so I don't view this support timeline as acceptable in any way. I really liked the tablet though when I was using it.

That's fair. But it's a chicken and an egg situation. They can't support the devices so fewer people will buy them. When fewer people buy them then they won't allocate resources to mobile devices. It's not like they are inexpensive either.

I had it too. Mine was lost at an airport. It was actually the best tablet I've had. The Z3 and Z4s though...they were at the point where Sony was winding down on tablets unfortunately. Too bad they stopped support so quickly.

It's off topic but I always hear Android people talk about rooting stuff.

Can the Z3 be rooted and upgraded to the current OS? I realize I'd lose Sony's custom stuff, which is fine. Back in the day I was using it for remote PS4 play so it wasn't an option.

I loved the tablet and was considering a Sony phone at the time, but the short support timeline put me off for good.

I never have, but I'm pretty sure I recall reading Z3s being rooted on XDA site a lot.

One thing that stood out to me was that the screen dims (like oled TV's) depending on the content. Possibly to prevent burn in? That would be annoying af, imo.

Wish they released it here, but ever since they dropped support for the MENA region, it's impossible to find here. Why do popular reviewers almost never mention or review Sony phones?

Update: Wife just text to say it's sitting at home, arrived at 2:30. Lucky she was in as the DHL message said they would deliver between 3:40 -4:40.

Note 9, if I'm honest I don't really need to but I'm able to get 25% off o2 though work and was able to sell the note 9 and clear the rest of the remaining balance (bought directly from Samsung). I'm just a bit bored with Samsung having had the S8+, S9+ and Note 9 plus not being able to flash ROMs because of the fear of tripping KNOX.

I'm going with Purple, last purple phone I bought was Xperia XZ2 and that was my favorite xperia phone. Black looks nice but it's pain to clean IMO. I already bought the official Style Touch Cover in purple, now waiting for the phone to launch on July 12th!

I've had an S8+ for the past two years and due an upgrade soon. Would this be a good upgrade over the Samsung or should I maybe wait for a potential S10 Note?

The Samsungs have other unique benefits to them like Dex Mode and you are guaranteed more updates/software support from the standard screen ratios.

OK I haven't get a chance to really mess around however here is a few quick (personal!) points:
  • Going back to a screen which is flat is great, I've been using phone with curved sides and while they look pretty the can 100% distort an image at the edges.
  • Not having a hole in the screen for the camera is good! Wife has an s10 and I really don't care what anyone says having a black hole on a white background or when scrolling trough a website is stupid as fuck.
  • I'm having really difficulty adjusting to the side mounted finger print reader, this might be down to me not being used to it, I've registered 4 different prints and it seems very hit and miss.
  • I was worried after reading some online previews about this size and 'pocket-ability' of the phone, coming from a Note 9 this phone is so much nicer in the hand and pocket.
  • Talking about size the height of the screen hasn't really been an issue with apps, the only one which had black bars was google authenticator, all other app work not problems (I haven't tried games).
  • Netflix refuses to install…
  • The screen… wow, coming from a Note 9 I wasn't really expecting much of a difference but flicking Creator mode is like night and day. It's like when you have a TV correctly calibrated and the image is just so much better.
  • Phone is snappy as fuck, Note 9 was no slouch but this feels so much faster.
  • Im digging Sonys OS launcher design, its pretty much stock android but its so clean, nicer than Samsungs new One UI (which isn't bad).
  • However there doesn't seem to be a system dark mode…
  • I kinda wish that there was an option to have SMS/email/etc sorted with newest closest to the keyboard, I've wanted this for a long time but with the extra height this was be a real boon.
  • Sony still have such random apps that cannot be uninstalled, why Sony!?
  • Haven't had a chance to play with the camera.
I haven't been able to register for the free headphones, I keep getting an error that my IMEI is incorrect, anyone else in the UK having this problem?
