Didn't see a thread about it,seems like this breaking news didn't get enough attention out of western media. It's a horrible story, and a watershed #metoo moment. News and discussions about it are flooding east asian internet.

It's exposed that there were Telegram pedophilia-theme chat rooms in South Korea, you had to pay through bit-coin to get in. It's called "Nth Room". People share rape and torture clips of women and children there, even live-abusive performance.

Most victims are underage.

"Nth Room" had about 260,000 paid members. And Korea's male population is a little less than 26 million. Police department confirms that those members including government employee, pop stars, famous entrepreneurs.

More than two million South Korea women made a petition, urge the government to expose all Nth Room members.

You can look into this case using these twitter hashtags:

#nthroom_stop

This is horrible. Reminder this thread explained the way the USA is also finding it hard to keep up a fight against these anonymous circles online and it's scary:

NYT: A Criminal Underworld of Child Abuse (Potential Trigger Warning)

This thread has potential to trigger sexual abuse victims and others. My OP does not have any lurid details in it, but articles and episodes linked may. New York Times' the Daily Podcast had an episode this morning that seemed like an episode I'd normally skip. The title, "A Criminal...

Just curious Ceerious did you specify the male population of S Korea because it was a male chat room? Or just that it has been found to be mostly men? (I don't know the demographics at play, genuine question about the stats)

What's the current path of justice for this? Any actions taken by the Korean government?

Uh, it's everywhere. Have to expose them all and save people from abuse, instead of brushing it under the carpet for decades. I don't doubt most will get away with it sadly.

Remember that UK band member trying to set up a baby too, horrific. He got caught before I think.

Cho Ju-bin faces charges of violating the child protection act, the privacy act and the sexual abuse act, as well as abuse, threats, and coercion, after he was identified as the blackmail ring's leader.

The 25-year-old, who allegedly used the nickname "baksa," or "doctor" in Korean, is accused of distributing and streaming the videos in a group chatroom on the messaging service Telegram.

Police, who have referred the case to prosecutors, made Cho's name public after a record five million South Koreans signed multiple petitions on the presidential office website demanding that authorities reveal his identity.

Does SK normally not reveal the name of people arrested for felonies?

"I apologise to those who were hurt by me," Cho said as he was led out of a police station in Seoul on Wednesday, but he did not respond when asked by reporters if he had admitted to the charges. "Thank you for ending the life of a demon that I couldn't stop."

The setup he had sounds a lot like those "Girls do Porn" assholes over here in the US.

I saw that South Korea went against the norm and released the identity of the supposed "ringleader." Some 24 year-old South Korean who apologized to reporters while wearing a neck brace.

And you can't get online in S. Korea without a real ID right? Arrest all of them!

I lived in Korea for 4 years. You can absolutely get online without a real ID. In the 4 years I was there, I think the only time I needed to use mine was to sign up for a Korean LoL account.

Yeah, you can get online in Korea without real ID through some trickey. But you need to paid to get into the Telegram group, one reported number is 700,000 KRE, about 600 dollars. So it's not that easy to get in.

Thank you for sharing but can you put some of the details in as spoilers cause that is hyper traumatic shit

Sorry, I deleted that part.

Are they saying 1% of Korea's male population was involved? Or is that worldwide?

It's no doubt that most of the members are Korea males because they communicate in Korean in those chat-rooms.
But are they all Korea? Can't be sure, the investigation is still in progress.

These are some official reports from Korea youtube channle. If you have Korea-speaking friends, please let them help you to watch these clips.

Why is always pedophilia the final frontier for rich and powerful people? Is destroying innocence the ultimate wish when every other wish is satiated? If so, there's no hope for this species.

Is this the same scandal that has been making waves in the K-pop world for the last year or an entirely different one?

It appears to be different. I think what you're referring to was the prostitution ring revolving the Burning Sun club and included many kpop stars?

So fucked up and glad this was uncovered. The deep web is likely to be full of these things as scary as it sounds.

How is that many people being involved possible? Am I missing something? Is the whole purpose of this nth thing rape and underage porn or is there more to it? I'm just trying to grapple with the thought of that many people being involved and I don't want to believe it

Makes me only think how those rooms probably exist aswell in other parts of the world and that they all should gez the harshest punishment possible.

What are the possible sentences in Korea for this?

It's widely considered that this crime is far more widespread and common than anyone thinks. The internet enables it on an unfathomable scale.

The trick to stopping it is police infiltrating the dark web, but it's an uphill battle against the quantity of the crime

I remember the story here when Europe broke the biggest pedophile ring of something in the hundreds of thousands a couple years ago, it's sad to think that this is happening on a scale bigger than anyone wants to imagine. I hope the victims are able to get the help they deserve and bring those to justice.

Apparently one member of the group was threatening an elementary school student, which then a middle schooler found out, pleaded for them to stop and then they raped the middle schooler, filmed it and sent it over.

God these people are fucked up. The culture has always been there for men in Korea to have all power over women (dudes burning Irene's picture for being a feminist, Golden Sun Scandal). These fuckers need to die or worse.
