As fucked up as this is, it doesn't even scratch the surface of what's going on around the world.
The justice system in Korea is so fucked.
It's not just Korea the justice system in a lot of countries a fucked in similar ways, Japan maybe the best known and comparable example. They had a loophole regarding possession of child porn that only got closed in 2014. In poor countries it's much, much worse.

1% is crazy. imagine if that happened in any other country With that number, we would have it on news for a month and people would not rest until the government did something about it and names out on the table.

South Korea seems to have the worst racial /sexual /social discrimination of all south East Asian countries right now.

South Korea isn't South East Asian though. Actually, SEA are the ones that get discriminated by Koreans quite a bit, especially the women.

I would have thought that the neck gypsum was put on him by the police to prevent people from breaking his fucking neck before the trial is completed. This is sickening, I hope those trash all face a lifetime in jail.

Burning Sun Scandal: A Timeline of Allegations, Arrests and Involvement of Several K-Pop Stars [Updated]

Lee Seung-hyun, known widely as Seungri, was the youngest member of one of K-pop’s most influential boy bands, BIGBANG. As a businessman, he took on leadership roles in various enterprises ranging from sublabel YGX to a ramen shop to a club called Burning Sun..

Nope, that was Burning Sun. This is different.
Holy shit, what? I honestly thought it's the continuation story from that.

Just talking to my gf and she is telling me more about it.
She told me even more people saw those pictures because some users of that telegram group put the files into a "p2p" site.
She is also telling me a guy managed to threaten a girl into cutting his nickname (Baksa) into her own arm.
This shit is crazy and disgusting also something with worm that I won't write here, because it is too graphic.

Videos are also about humiliating girls, like making them drinking water out of a toilet.

People already working the 1% of Korean males narrative like it's actually half and there's no chance people from other regions weren't on that channel. Nope, time to side-eye any Korean dude from this point forward.

It was a Korean channel where people communicated in Korean. While there were certainly non-Korean's on the channel the overwhelming majority of them were most likely Korean.

This is an American Forum, where the majority of posters are American, but that doesn't stop a sizeable number of international posters from posting here.

I'm so fucking sick of shit like this. Sick of it back at the old site and sick of it here now...YOU DON'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. You're calling South Korea a South East Asian country and then talking about its society in broad generalizations like you fucking have any clue about anything.

Tell you what. Talk to any black person that was stationed in SK or just lived there for any number of years and ask them about their racism towards them. Ask them where they would rather get pulled over by the police. If SK is the worst of the lot, then Asia as a whole must be a goddamn utopia.

I think the reasoning goes like this: English is an extremely common second language worldwide. Korean is not

English-speakers worldwide: 1.27 billion
Korean-speakers worldwide: 0.08 billion

Speaking Korean online says much more about the likelihood of you being Korean, than speaking English says about your likelihood to be from the UK, US or Australia. If you speak Korean, you're extremely likely to be Korean. If you speak English, you could be from pretty much anywhere.

That being said, I agree with you that there are some garbage takes on South Korea in this thread.

Non-Americans who speak English are a lot more common than non-Koreans who speak Korean. And even with that distinction I would guess that the majority of people who post on this forum are American.

This is not meant to vilify Korean's btw. It is to point out that 1% minimum of the male population around the globe are pedophiles (and I believe that number to be an extremely low estimate). People do not want to believe it but it is true. It is why so many children are sexually abused. This problem is a lot more common than we think and exists globally and people need to start understanding and talking about that.

Agreed.
But we've got to agree that South Korea as a country has had and continues to have a huge problem with their treatment of women.

edition.cnn.com

South Korea's young men are fighting against feminism | CNN

On the same street corner in Seoul where 10,000 South Korean women rallied last October to demand an end to spy cameras and sexual violence, the leader of a new activist group addressed a small group of angry young men.
www.vice.com

Why Korean Women Are Hesitant To Label Themselves Feminists

‘Maybe I’d say I’m a feminist if I wasn’t in Korea, but there’s a certain stereotype and stigma that comes with the title here.’

Of course. I was mainly referring to MRORANGE's double whammy of A) saying that South Korea is a Southeast Asian country and B) implying that South Korea is the only country in which this scandal would be handled in the way it has.

What moron would call SK a SE Asia country. They're East Asia or if you want to be technical, NE Asia. Did that person fail simple geography or something?

Yeah I wouldn't be suprised if I knew some guys who went in those chatrooms. I knew so many guys who had weird issues with women when I was in Korea.

Also a little shocked at how long this took to reach international news.

Uh, it's everywhere. Have to expose them all and save people from abuse, instead of brushing it under the carpet for decades. I don't doubt most will get away with it sadly.

Remember that UK band member trying to set up a baby too, horrific. He got caught before I think.

Ian Watkins. Yes, the baby of a fan. Fucking twat.

This is awful news as well, fuck all those people.

So if nearly 1% of the male population are involved... by other country's metrics that would be like 1 million American men. Or 300,000 British men.

Fucking unreal

what... what the fuck
You are incredibly naive if you don't think this is also happening in America and Britain.

Sorry I didn't post something as in depth as your barely a sentence contribution to this story. I try very hard to divorce myself emotionally as much as possible from these stories as one who feels fortunate that all he had happen is a family friend taking naked pictures of me when I was a kid while I had multiple friends over the years that were victims of things infinitely worse, including one driven to suicide for what her father did to her that to this day is root of my murder fantasies involving these monsters. As well as having been told absolutely horrifying stories that are so sick the media generally avoids reporting even a gloss over of the details on that leave me and would just about anyone unable to sleep without pharmaceutical assistance, shit that I'm now thinking of, thanks. So I'm so sorry for my "non take" now kindly fuck off.

It's stories like this that always manage to force me to think about my stance on the death penalty. In the end, I always think I'm against, because ultimately I think taking someone's life is wrong no matter what. But things like this are just so completely and utterly sickening. I truly don't believe it's possible for people who do such evil, evil things to be rehabilitated. I wish they just would not exist. And like others say: it's disturbing to think about how many more instances like this there are across the world, that we'll never know about.

While we're on this topic, I've never really understood the basis for why S. Korea outlaws all pornography of any kind. Googling didn't yield many good results, so I'd love if someone here could enlighten me

You mean like Epstein?
No I was refereeing to the media coverage (and journalistic memory) of this specific case, because it's what the OP was talking about. Not saying that it couldn't happened here : there is already a frightening list of similar criminal rings dismantled by Interpol. The Net has brought a lot of creeps believing that just passively using a computer to watch such horrors doesn't make them a part of it.

One of the former Nth room operators, online nickname "Watchman" (yeah I'm not joking,), who distributed more than 9000 videos in the chat room, was arrested and are waiting for his sentencing. The judge suggested a term of three years and six months.

Eh, and here I was hoping the death penalty.

How does something that's supposed to be illicit and secretive get that big before it's exposed?
Some university should research this. I am going to guess that people who were into it never spoke to others about it. That way it was not even shared among people who were involved. But then again it was on Telegram so they must have seen other group members.

Humans were a mistake. Ugh, this makes me so sick. I hope justice is served and all the people held accountable are punished.
It's been said by many wise people that animals never perform acts of evil. When a lion kills it does it out of defense or hunger. Only humans do it simply to enjoy seeing others suffer.

On the flip side some humans are also doing acts of kindness which animals can't achieve.

A nice sentiment, but untrue. There are plenty of animals out there which hurt other creatures out of aggression, sexual gratification, or entertainment.
