Got a pretty nice laugh out of this in an Email right now.

Yeah, I don't know how to feel about this.

I'm not angered by it, even though I accept that is how some will feel, but I do thinks it's a tad too weird for my tastes.

I know I'd feel much better about it if they provided these free with any purchase, instead of using it as incentive to get people to spend more money, which feels a tad too opportunistic and therefore gross.

I think it would be a better promotion if they donate a facemask to a local hospital for every 10$ or so spent on their website.

$100 (!!) to hit the threshold
Branded with the company logo
Timed promotion to entice FOMO
Tacky joke about "+1 Vitality"

They couldn't have done a worse job with this.

To be fair to them, they recently claimed that 100% of revenue from recent sales is going to Covid-19 charities.

Whether it's true I don't know.

Whether it only meant the 54 game Eidos collection they had on sale, or for any Square games bought I don't know.

I don't even know if that is still running.

This reminds me, I started playing Yakuza 5 recently and was taken aback by the amount of face masks in it compared to previous Yakuzas. Genuinely thought they patched them in for a sec.

I'm not going to go on a crusade because of this or anything. But it's certainly not a great look to commission face masks for promotional purposes while many communities around the globe are still struggling to obtain them...

So this is where we are now. Every other ad on TV is filled with laptop camera testimonials, empty streets, staged applauses, masked reunions, long looks through windows with actors portraying loved ones, all attempting to capitalize on this pandemic through showing us how much corporations care and are there for us. Now companies are giving away branded masks with purchases.

This is all so fucked and incredibly tasteless.

It's like a casino offering vouchers to a gambling crisis center if you spend over $3,000.

You guys pretty much summed up my reaction. I don't know how much masks actually cost (I've been privileged enough to not need to leave my house since the quarantine started) but something about "spend 100 bucks on our products and get a mask!" combined with places struggling to get them... I don't know. This seems... weird?

I would say 90% of the commercials I see on TV are customized for the pandemic now, and they are all basically copy paste messaging when trying to sell you stuff.

It's nauseating.

Yeah it's gross. I don't watch much TV but I use YouTube a lot and am bombarded by the Grubhub ads telling me how heroic their drivers are.

Pretty much saying it's ok to martyr our drivers and we're gonna spend this money on advertising instead of paying them more.
