Midgar, With Love
I hope this consolidation approach doesn't prevent future collaboration with Acquire. I'm loving Octopath Traveler right now.

Good to see they're aware that Tomb Raider failed to provide something fresh. It was a great game, arguably the best in the trilogy, but still...
Tomb Raider is a franchise that would greatly benefit from scaling down, reviewing what works and what's best for it, and what new things it could bring to itself. Try to have a stronger identity rather than tick boxes. It also does not need to be this huge big-budget blockbuster.

I hope Naoki Yoshida is still head of BD2. He only got promoted last year, and the guy is seriously amazing.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider's underwhelming sales and mixed reception might mean a soft reboot in the future. Hardly anyone seems to care about the story of the reboot games and Shadow's gameplay was widely criticized for basically being the same as Rise's.

Try telling us Lara is now the Tomb Raider three times in the row is might pushing it to hard.
And only noteworthy sidecharacter with Jonah is not really helping.

RestEra Sales threads
I don't believe this reorganization is bad at all, first of all they are not speaking about layoffs which is a great thing because that means that each division is going to have a lot more manpower. Each division is probably going to have several projects directed by different people, and I'd like to believe that each division will have people with similar expertise in a specific engine/platform so they can be temporarily allocated to urgent situations when the need arises (something specific that Tetsuya Nomura has complained about before)

I strongly believe that this reorganization arises in response to Tabata's resignation, because he (and his team) were the main pillar in charge of generating the AAA blockbusters

Perhaps the only thing I would be cautious of is that SE is trying to develop too many games on their own (Nier Automata 2, Babylon's Fall, FFVII-R, + unannounced projects and others) and perhaps this will hinder the output in the mid-term

Damn SOTTR bombed. 4 million is really low considering its budget...

No wonder Microsoft managed to get it for GP

I suggest the following names for the new organization

Business Unit 1 - Blighted Despotate
Business Unit 2 - Drowned Kingdom
Business Unit 3 - Empire of the Winds
Business Unit 4 - Autarchy of Flame

With the following official theme song

I mean, creative staff yeah. But your every day programmers do move project to project. IIRC, Lot of FFVIIR team helped out on KH3 since it was priority.

Ah I understand what you mean. I don't know if BD5 has enough staff to do the grunt work and FFVIIR is likely become the top priority for the company so you might be right about next gen.

A lot of times corporate restructuring is just making official what has been the case in practice for some time.

It's clear that Square Enix has repeatedly required many people from across business divisions to leave their division's project(s) to bail out whichever project is in crisis at that time — this is why Final Fantasy XIV had such a dramatic impact on their total output last generation — so reducing the number of business divisions makes sense.

It'll be interesting to see where Luminous Productions ends up in all of this, since the person who spearheaded it is gone and they're using a different engine from seemingly the entire rest of the company.

Dem teases!

Considering they stamped 2019 at the end of the Babylon's Fall trailer, yes. I wonder how big the project is. We have literally seen or heard nothing about it outside of the announcement trailer.

Could be a huge info dump similar to Astral Chain being revealed where it gets a release date.

Interesting to hear an outright admission that the marketing was severely lacking for JC4 and SotTR. It's a damn shame too considering Tomb Raider is a fantastic game. Just Cause 4 though... well...

Honestly, if they put Lara on an island with no humans and just had her explore ruins and solve puzzles, I'd be perfectly okay with that. They shouldn't be trying to position TR as an action game because it has never been good at that. A lot of people complained that SoTR didn't have enough combat. Remove the expectation of combat and people will focus on what is important in TR (exploration, platforming and puzzle-solving).

Thanks DKHF for pointing this :

gamesindustry.biz said:
Update:Upon reaching out to Square Enix for clarification on the planned consolidation, GamesIndustry.biz was told that the planned changes would be limited to Square Enix's Japan studio and would take place in April of 2019. Furthermore, the shift is not to involve a reduction of workforce, but is intended as a consolidation of business units to more effectively allocate resources.
