Square Enix is willing to put Classic Lara Croft everywhere except in new AA/AAA Tomb Raider game

With newest release of Classic Lara skin for Fortinte Square proved again that they are willing to do anything with old Lara except make new mainline game. Over the years we got endless runner featuring classic Lara (and T-Rex), puzzle game (Lara Croft Go), isometric coop spinoff (Guardian of the Light and Temple of Osiris) heck even Rainbow Six Siege got Classic Lara skin.

It's this tacit admission that OG Lara is still the iconic one, even if Polygon would have you believe otherwise

Yeah that's how reboots work. If DmC sold well we'd never see classic Dante again outside of throwbacks.

I don't need the design back but I'd love the overall tone and solitary exploration and platforming gameplay back, that's for sure. The atmosphere in those games was really amazing and I still love TR1 especially.

The new mobile game Tomb Raider Reloaded is in soft launch right now and leans closer to the original side, and it seems like the next mainline game will as well. So they're slowly moving in that direction.

No that's immature

She must be weeping openly while slitting a guy's throat. That is mature. Oh and with smaller boobs. It's really important to make the boobs smaller to justify the torture porn that isn't really torture porn, its actually very mature storytelling. With small boobs.

I mean, they did put her in a AAA game.

And she's also in their "AA efforts", like Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris as the actual protagonist. Which you mentioned, but doesn't seem to count for some reason.

Almost like it's only been a couple years since the reboot trilogy ended.

Like, what the fuck are you expecting (except another circlejerk thread like is already starting)? It's not like it's industry standard to have multiple AAA games series of the same series running at the same time. The other thing you listed are decades apart (including one from 2 generations ago) with 1/100th the effort, time, and manpower requirement.

The next reboot is likely gonna lean into this and be awful because nobody at modern SE knows how to make environmental puzzles.

I don’t trust Crystal Dynamics to write a good Lara Croft story, they’ve had like 5 chances and it always comes out mid. If they’re committed to keeping TR as a narrative-driven game, they really need to step it up in the writing department. It doesn’t need to be amazing but I can’t take “Lara follows daddy’s footsteps” anymore.

Honestly, I’d rather have the Crash/Spyro treatment for the first 5 Core games.

At least we've gotten semi-recent Tomb Raider games. If you want to have this discussion let's have it about Sam Fisher...

Someone actually posted this on Era. Hoo boy, the surprises never end.

The Core Lara Croft skin on Fortnite is literally perfect. Like I'm sure your average Era member who is too cool for Fortnite (but can name 50 Naruto characters and whose top 10 games are JRPGs) will find a way to nitpick it, but it's legitimately a HD version of the Lara Croft model they used in promo materials in the 90s.

New Lara > Old Lara.

Anyways, I am excited for more TR. The trilogy had its ups and downs, but I enjoyed all three games.

You have no idea how confused I was to see Lara Croft get gunned down in Rainbow Six Siege... I had no fucking idea she was in the game at all as I don't really pay attention marketing much and I hadn't played it in a while. I legit thought I was going crazy for a bit and my brother, who was fucking with me at the time, said he didn't see it and had no clue what I was talking about.

Anyways, that aside.. who knows what's in-store for the new Tomb Raider, wouldn't be surprised to see them lean more towards the classic aesthetic as this is pique nostalgia time for games of that age.

Got any picture? I only saw another skin that looked like the first crystal dynamics reboot.

Hm... Temple of Osiris was 2015, right? I am supremely bummed we didn't get another isometric shooter paired with Shadow. I kind liked them more than the mainline entries.

In this situation it’s probably because Fortnite asked for it really. if you look at the characters and the designs being brought into the game someone over there is choosing the “best” designed versions that would work for the game. Just look at the marvel characters specifically the X-Men. Also Fortnite has a lot of money and power due to how popular they are so the chances they are rejected is low.

I really just want a confident Laura again. I say "No Shades/Glasses, no buy" as a short hand for having a Laura that is confident enough to get shit done while wearing cool ass specs.

That Confidence was what made her really attractive.

Just make a real Tomb Raider game with Real Lara and not that generic-looking whiny psycho, with thoughtful level-design based exploration and not Uncharted-wannabe murder simulator gameplay mixed with godawful stories and characters, please.

Hopefully it will remain that way. I don't like Classic Lara, reboot Lara is better.

I mean Shadow of the Tomb Raider came out in 2018. So even if there is a new game that stars classic Laura, it's still in development. Does the OP think games are just made in a matter of months?

They know that OG Lara is still one of the most iconic characters in gaming history, and want to make sure to keep that flame somewhat alive during this diversion with the reboot series in case they need to go back. Which they probably will because new Lara is terrible.
