Moving aside the obvious issues of game preservation, ownership and costs involved in start up.
A important factor to note with the streaming "future" is the excessive data involved.

Well kiss your data plan goodbye

Nice find, out of interest does anyone know how much data streaming a game from a PS4 uses (To Vita, PC etc)?

Seems like a good way to wake America up from its monopoly-induced arbitrary data caps.

Most likely, though, ISPs will end up just asking Google to pay for zero-rating the data and it not counting towards your cap, the exact same as they already do for Netflix, Spotify, etc...

This. Luckily I don't have a data cap but that is an absurd amount of data if you are a heavy user and play in the highest setting.

That doesn't surprise me. I don't see Stadia becoming popular at all on release because of this.

Sucks for the people with data caps

edit: eh is the calculation sound? Isn't this article counting megabits as megabytes? lol

65 hours of gaming and my cap is tapped out. Good to know.

(Just to be clear, I never thought of game streaming as a choice for me, and can't see myself using it anytime soon).

Only $600+ per year in additional ISP costs just to make this a viable option for me. Internet service is shit in the US.

LOL. I have a 1TB data plan + 500GB addon ($20). I'd have to throw $50 more a month for unlimited, thanks Cox

I don't have a datacap.

Sucks for people who do, but doesn't affect me. I'll stream 4K/60 for sure.

No data cap here in UK, think it's absurd such a thing exists in any advance economy, its shameful and regressive. But yes, its not a problem for us, internet is a necessity not a luxury.

so a little more than double a 4k netflix which is estimated at 7 gbs per hour. makes sense 24fps vs 60

I'm happy to get use out of my unlimited data.

If you do not have an unlimited plan or semi decent internet than Stadia is not for you, I wouldn't call this news shocking

This will hurt my 2GB per day* plan on my phone tho. But I bet it will be decent enough when 5G arrives.

*It is unlimited, but I have to refresh it when I use more than 2GB on a day. Which would be annoying with streaming.

This is the biggest deal-breaker for me.
I have 1TB cap and I play around 40-55 hours a month sometimes more. I use the internet for other things too.

My isp will auto charge me heavy fees if I pass that cap.
Until Google or ISP providers figure that out, I'm out from the streaming market

Already paying for the limitless data. Stream shit all the time and I'm over the cap as is every month.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they seem to be counting Megabits per second as Megabytes per second?

Is that as funny and wrong as I think it is?

Google says it can provide a steady 60fps 4K stream with a bitrate of 35Mbps. That's the high end of the streaming requirements, while 1080p at 60fps drops the bandwidth to 20Mbps, and 720p 60fps requires just 10Mbps. That works out to around 15.75GB per hour of 4K streaming, 9GB per hour of 1080p, or 4.5GB per hour at 720p.

No, the math is correct.

35 Mbps*60 seconds*60 minutes = 126,000 Mb/hour

126,000/8 = 15,750 MB/hour (~15.75 GB/hour)
