Update Nov 10:
Patch 3.3.0 is now live. Patch notes:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link//16840-Star-Citizen-Alpha-330
A lot of the content meant for this one (the first planet Hurston with its city Lorville) got delayed from 3.3.0 to 3.3.5. That's in Evocati testing right now and it sounds like that'll wrap up pretty quickly. We'll have a new thread with a new OT for 3.3.5 once it's out.

Update June 30:
Patch 3.2 is live:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link//16638-Star-Citizen-Alpha-320
Mining, more flexible quantum travel, new group features, more flyable ships and more at the link.

Update March 31:
Patch 3.1 is out now.
Feature summary: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/16487-Star-Citizen-Alpha-310
Full patch notes: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link//16485-Star-Citizen-Alpha-310

-----------------------------------------------------------
Star Citizen alpha 3.0 is the long-awaited patch that adds the ability to land on procedurally-generated planets.

Update Dec 23: The patch is now live for all backers. There's a new launcher for Live that needs to be downloaded from here:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/download
(people who were previously using the PTU launcher still need to install this new one for the Live side)

Click thumbnails for full size. All images are in game.

New content
Three moons to explore:
Yela - ice

(from reddit)
Cellin - volcanic

Daymar - mountains, dirt, thick fog, lightning storms

and one huge asteroid, Delamar, which has the Levski landing zone.

There are outposts and wrecked ships to find on the surface. You can find these by exploring or might be directed there by the mission system.

New mission types: Patrol, Assassination, Cargo, Smuggling, Exploration, Escort

Cargo - buy and sell commodities. Cargo can be seen in ship storage.

Grouping: Joining a friend's game works. You get on the same server as them and it automatically adds you to their party.

Flight model changes in atmosphere - turbulence, changes to handling

Ship insurance - ordering replacements for lost ships

Basic ship security - lock it up when you leave so people don't take it

Stamina system - oxygen, heart rate - e.g. difficulty aiming after sprinting

Cloth simulation on clothing (new and existing)

New armour types - Heavy, Explorer

New tech
- Incremental patching. After the initial ~35GB download, further updates have been around 500MB each.
- Frame rate improvements
- New Filmic Tone Mapping Curve (ACES)
- Temporal Supersampling (TSAA) - previously rendered frames are used to improve the anti-aliasing results on the new frame
- Improved Screen Space Directional Occlusion (SSDO)
- New graphics options including FOV (slider), chromatic aberration (slider), motion blur (off, camera blur, camera+object blur)
- Network and server improvements allowing more players per instance
- Persistence - ammo, missiles, spawn location, inventory
- Nested physics grids for transporting ships inside larger ships (Dragonfly, Ursa rover)
- Reworked interactions ("item 2.0")
- Mobiglass interface improvements
- Better HUD rendering - render to texture instead of overlays
- Cockpit interface improvements: control how much power is generated and distributed to other systems, monitor how much heat, EM and IR the ship is generating and reduce it, monitor and adjust shield strength and repair behavior and adjust power usage and performance

- Updated kiosk interfaces
- Subsumption system used for dynamic NPC behaviour, daily routines, mission generation (flow graphs), conversation logic
- atmosphere entry effects

- New quantum drive effects

- Engine trails and contrails
- volumetric fog in space for things like nebulas and dust clouds around asteroids
- Planets rotate and have a corresponding day/night cycle. Suns rise and set:

- Modular procedural generation for space stations and outposts

"Where are those procedural cities we saw at Citizencon?"
Those aren't in this patch, unfortunately.

Basics for new players
This quick start video by STLYoungblood is a good place to start.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hStCa-ugtu0
This patch includes a hint system for new players.

The base game package is $45 for Star Citizen (the MMO) and you can add Squadron 42 (the single player campaign) for another $15.
More detail here: Getting Started

Controls:
https://starcitizen.tools/Guide:Controls

Game modes:
"Persistent Universe" is the main one that has the new content. Players spawn into shared instances of the Crusader star system which currently are holding around 50 players. Frame rate tends to drop as more players join, although not as much as in the last patch.
"Arena Commander" has dogfighting and racing in smaller instances (or offline) which tends to have better performance.
"Star Marine" is for FPS matches.

"Offline" mode
(uses memory editing hack, not supported)
The shared universe map can be played as a Free Flight map for better FPS, but with server-side features disabled. Details here:

Community thread

Glad CIG managed to get this out before the end of the year. Can PTU players talk / post videos about what they're playing?

Oooh, got my email for this this morning. I still have no idea why I keep getting in the first wave of public testing. Not gonna complain, mind you. Gonna get that downloading, ready for later. (also just accepted the invite to the org. Forgot to check for it, was in the old one. With just my rusty, ancient, not been updated for literally forever 300i.)

Love the OP Rat. Top notch stuff, good sir.

Thanks, glad we have Boss in there diligently gathering screenshots so I had some to include!

The sun in the background on that sunset one made me do a double take. It's subtle but the lighting looks right on.

Pretty sure they must have a bugged list in there somewhere... a lot of people said similar things on reddit.

I expect we'll have a lot of people emerging from cryosleep to check things out for this patch. It's definitely been a while since anything big has happened. Check the org forum on spectrum for the Discord link if you aren't in there already.

Exciting times! Even if I'm a little more excited for the Sq42 news later this year.

How big is the game these days? I only have so much room left on my ssd.
And do you have to redownload the game for each patch like a year ago?

Great OP as usual Rat!

I am going to patiently wait until I get my hands on this but it would be a lie to say I am not incredibly excited to finally get to explore 3.0!

You have to download the game using the new patcher (it removes 2.6.3) but afterwards the delta patches will only be downloaded so you don't have to download entire builds anymore.

Around 35 GB for the initial download. There's an incremental patcher now and updates are around 500mb so far.

Ah nice progress! I'll try the update when I delete some stuff then.

Has CIG talked at all about how they plan to scale up the networking to 100s or 1000s of players when it seems like the game is struggling to provide an acceptable experience with a dozen players in an instance currently?

Let's see how Era gets on with SC!
I make a note of popping in to see new media, and I'm rightly blown away by the technical achievement of the individual pieces. I have my concerns, but I'm starting to itch for a space game and I cba with the return to Elite.

Excellent OP Raticus, I think it's the most complete one we've had yet.
I still can't believe I'm in and currently downloading alpha 3.0 after all this waiting.
Prepare for a flood of incredible screenshots and footage in the next few days!

Curious if there will be gameplay improvements on the flight model/dynamics. Y'all in it, please post cockpit shots. Would like to see the changes.

I can't wait to try this out on my LG OLED. Space Sims are made for OLED and I haven't played this since early 2 builds.

3.0 already has increased number of players per server and a bit better FPS. Still work in progress and no where near perfect.

I am thirsty for reactions and informations about this update but I guess people are too busy playing it.

I wish I was in the first wave.

So we can expect a release on public servers before the end of the year, more or less, that's good, I'm eager to try it.

I started the download before I went to work. I'm gonna play it in a couple of hours and will probably post some impressions.

I'm more of a content guy, so I will try to find out what you can actually do already, if you know what I mean.

According to the email, there's a lot of content that is still to go in via the Delta Patcher. This is mostly a stress test at the moment I believe.

It's been at least a year since I've checked in on Star Citizen, this is probably a good chance to see how things have progressed

That' s a lie :p
Can't wait for it to be public, glad there's finally new stuff to do :)

Ha, yeah, I guess I should clarify that was "earlier than we were currently expecting based on recent progress". I'll take that bit out anyway, it's not quite so barebones any more.

Some nice stuff starting to show up on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/

I'm looking forward to getting some good shots of the entry effects later myself. Here's a nice one. There's a bit of a bug with how the atmosphere overlays Crusader in the background though.

Can't wait for the public release !
It was a nice surprise to see the news about PTU this morning, totally unexpected.
We should see a lot of interesting stuff appear on youtube in the coming days.

I'm looking forward to playing this for the first time in a year. Hooray for the delta patcher!

Here's hoping we'll have an actual game by 2020, sigh.

The heat death of the universe will happen first.
One thing is certain, this joke will got old first :p

I'm curious about the performance we'll get on this one. That's my main struggle at the moment, I want a smooth experience with a framerate as consistent as possible.
I just want to cruise around in my cutlass with some friends at a stable framerate, I'm a simple man.
