What year did they change the terms?
Normal means of pursuing refunds were effectively removed with Star Citizen's June 6, 2016 terms of service update, but it wasn't until December 2017 that CIG ceased issuing them entirely.

The alpha is fun as it is right now, as long as you accept that it's not a game, it's an entertaining collection of bugs that sometimes lets you do the thing you want to do. Spending more than $50 on it is kind of ridiculous, and mostly you can get enough of it by trying the Free Flight weeks they do every so often. I'm glad they do put it out there for people to try without paying, because regardless of the current coolness or future promise, no one should give money to them without getting to see just how buggy and incomplete it is first. A few of my friends and I played together in the Free Flight last month and had an absolute blast.

Two of us took a mission where we had to assassinate two space mobsters in two different parts of the solar system within a minute. We were 2 seconds too slow to get the full payout, but we got CrimeStat ratings anyway, making us criminals. We tried to land but didn't realize we should have hacked a security terminal first to remove the records of our crimes, so security scanned us and shot us down. We respawned in prison, tried to mine for a little bit to reduce our sentences, gave up on that and tried to escape, I broke my leg, my friend still made it out, and then the server crashed before we got to resume our adventures. But we popped onto a new one, took some jobs locating missing crew members from derelict or crashed spaceships, upgraded our guns, and stuck to bounty hunting until we got enough cash to get better armor, and then we rescued a hijacked spaceship Rainbow 6 style. The closest I could compare it to is Sea of Thieves in space, but that's selling both of them short.

The roadmap stuff mentioned in the OP is absolutely ridiculous, though. Elevator panels is a major roadmap feature? I mean, the elevators do suck (two of my friends got stuck in one and had to die to get out :P) but wow. They need to make the servers stop crashing, your ships get unretrievable, your account not freezing you out of logging in, plus putting in all the shit they've been talking about for years like salvaging, multicrew stuff, medical gameplay, setting up a store, exploration, player made quests (the escort and transport ones that are there aren't enough), etc.

Star Citizen, even as it is right now, gives me more of the living-in-space scifi cool first person vibe that I want than anything else I've tried, and I've tried a lot of games in the genre. If it ever becomes an actual game, I'm glad I already have a ship and stuff. And I've definitely already gotten my $35 worth just from the fun I've had in alpha. I just don't see it being an actual game for at least another 5 years at this rate, and they'll have bilked a lot more money out of a lot more people by then.
Gotta be honest, this is the first experience I've heard someone have with the game that actually sounds like something interesting and fun to play. But with all the bugs and missing features that still doesn't justify this game's incredibly gross business model.

you know..its really hard not to get mad at comments like these. Ive spent over 15k, dont feel ashamed of anything, and i love and enjoy the game. So honestly, i wont say much cause this forum would just ban me but why can't ppl just accept the fact the its not a scam? if you wanna pay for it, you pay for it. Behind that money theres a full fledged game that keeps updating constantly.
How does it feel to have more money than sense?

On average $110 per person.

Amazing.
It's actually amazing.

I couldn't actually remember how much I backed for way back when - I did have a tendency to go in high on a Kickstarter if I strongly felt that it was something that should exist... so I thought I ought to actually look it up and find out if I'm above or below average.

Turns out... $30. Well below average. I'm actually a little surprised, but looking through the tiers I don't see any t-shirts in the tier brackets. I was a sucker for a t-shirt. There's a missed opportunity, Chris!

yes you are.
Did you even understood what he was writing?

He did not try to blame the users for their network code (as he states in the thread), he only lists things that can mess with wireless connections and are out of the developers control. (and he is not wrong with that one btw)

btw: please stop with this "true backer" nonsense
Ugh some people seriously just defend everything CIG does huh? No point in arguing with people like you, how can anybody with a straight face that the alpha runs great and has lots of gameplay features? lmao

Gotta respect the hustle. Backers are really Ok with this ?
Dont quote me on this, but I heard his brother who's also working there is driving a luxury car too from someone in the game dev scene.
They're both independently wealthy.
Im not and if you were a true backer you would know that:
Please stop, you're embarrassing the rest of us.
These accusations can't be true because I know Chris personally (through YouTube) and he is the kindest, most disciplined, selfless and honest man out there.
You have a parasocial relationship with Chris. That's not friendship.

So do the more expensive ships come with lifetime insurance or do players have to re-buy them with in-game currency if they get destroyed?

Honestly marzoo if you were the REAL true backer (lmao what does this even mean) you say you are, you would know that in a reddit post on the Star Citizen reddit, Bearded-CIG was able to diagnose a reoccurring 30k issue that a player had because the ethernet cable was running along copper pipes. Moving the ethernet cable stopped the disconnections.

I love these threads that pop up every 6 months or so.

I have one question: If I buy this right now, what can I actually do?

Out of curiosity, what is the premise of this game? Is it like EVE Online meets No Man's Sky? Are they going for an MMO experience?

Wasn't this supposed to ship this year? I felt like I was told that some years back, that it would slip till 2020?

Skimming this thread though it doesn't seem like that's going to happen though?

So another year in the books and no shipping game... I do try to respect people spending their money on what they want. And I still do; but at some point, I can respect you buying what you want and still call out the manufacturer of the shit you chose to buy.

We are either well past that point or entering that area when we are on year 8 to 10 (With Wiki saying development started in 2011 and crowdfunding in 2013) and theres still no signs of imminent release.

That shits a problem

That shits not normal (no matter how much you try to pretend it is)

Sorry.

More EVE online, less No Man's Sky. The best description would be a space life simulator as that is the end goal now. https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/12879-Death-Of-A-Spaceman

Similar to EVE, you make your own career path, but just like EVE folks with more cash will definitely have an edge over you. People can argue if it's pay-to-win depending on you define your end game goal. If you think of it is as an MMO where gear and loot is the endgame, then I'd consider other players already have an advantage. If you consider it as a game where you can fill an occupation of a space trucker, explorer, salvager or find a niche such as a bartender or space merchant then gear/loot wouldn't matter too much to you except none of these gameplay loops are implemented in-game yet, only cargo hauling.

I love these threads that pop up every 6 months or so.

Since there are multiple types of purchases available, what you will need to buy is a Game Package, which includes a beginner ship and access to the Alpha testing of the game. Prices range from $45 (USD) to about $150 (USD), starting with the basic package to ships a tier higher depending on what you want to start with. Previously, the Game Package would give you access to the Persistent Universe (PU), plus Squadron 42 (single player campaign) and the two other multiplayer modules Arena Commander (gives you access to racing and ship combat) and Star Marine (is the FPS only multiplayer shooting portion). Besides the PU, no one really plays both of the modules, you can get a game once in awhile, but it will mostly you on an empty instanced server.

The main multiplayer portion is the PU that gives you the space sim aspect of the game. You will start from a selected space station or landing zone and begin from there. At this point you can select from a few different types of missions or just choose to explore the universe with your starter ship, but understand the missions are pretty rudimentary and a half broken.

The current main gameplay loops are combat, mining and cargo hauling. You can choose to explore the planets, which I think the fidelity and detail is quite amazing. There a quite a bit of combat missions that have you fighting pirates, looking for bounties, or protecting a ship. A few have you flying down onto a planet's surface and raiding a drug lab into FPS combat or finding a missing person in a cave. Although there are lots of missions, there's realistically only about 4-5 different variations that include delivery missions where you retrieve a package from location and drop it off in another destination. The mining portion requires that you have a mining ship, which there are only 2 currently available. You can either grind for the rental cost or buy in-game, which costs about 1.2 million. A delivery mission with the basic ship can fetch you about 1-3K in 10-30mins of gameplay, you do the math on how long it'll take to get a mining ship. And then there is cargo hauling which requires a ship with plenty of cargo. I believe all accounts will have a Freelancer (one of the mid-size cargo ships available), I think these are temporarily though, who knows how long it will be in your available ship. In different stations/landing zones, you can go to a trading console and purchase commodities you can haul to another location and sell those as there will be different pricing from locations.

IMHO, I pretty sure I've mentioned in a previous post, I've invested slightly a bit more than most casual players. Although I'm not a space whale, a lot of the my experience has been more pleasant. Yeah sure there are plenty of bugs and connection issues to go around. I am still a believer -- there's a lot of optimism involved on my part -- and a see the potential if CIG is able to deliver. That is to not say I am pleased with the direction of relying on ship sales and the frustrating pace of development. I think it is dubious to tell yourself that this project won't ever fail at any moment even if the company provides some transparency and insight to the project.

It's giving me the FFXIV V1.0 vibes. Why not keep releasing insane ship packs, if you have whales willing to spend. FFXIV had it's fair share of loyal people claiming it was a great game with no issues, that went well. However, the game has a lot of promise still. But, they shouldn't need anymore money for development, unless it's been grossly mismanaged. So, I can understand why people would call it a scam. It's possible it will end up like the Atari VCS.
But if people are finding joy in this project, good for them.

I follow this game just for the ship commercials. If my PC was up to it I'd drop $80 to get that one ship. Like the 300i or something.

It takes all of 30 seconds to confirm that this in fact, totally bullshit, but sure, continue to fabricate things (this is the second time) in the absence of anything meaningful to say.

Sorry you're just not a true backer and if you were, you would know that Chris Roberts has vanished and the entire staff are now looking for him instead of making the game.

All of this is especially crazy when you have great alternatives like Elite Dangerous and No Man's Sky out there. Yeah they are fundamentally different games. But there are to many similarities to not ignore.

Finally, people have a right to do what they want with their money. If they say they got their money's worth after spending $10k or $20k on a beautiful space experience and made good friends with other players of means, why would you assume they are lying? They have no reason to lie. Even if 90% of the people out there think they are victims.
People can do what they want with their money, And I can say that selling people 4.600€ dlc for a videogame is a predatory tactic thar will ruin someone life sooner or later.

Chris is definitely still there. He's just cutting back a lot on video presence (as most people in the company, if you haven't noticed). We'll see him in a video soon enough as 3.10 just entered evocati and will will thus arrive live in the coming weeks with the Pillar talk video that comes with each major patch (that will for sure feature Chris). And his card at the end of youtube videos was outdated for a long time, they had to get rid of it.

As for Sandi, maybe she's still there maybe she's not. Is that important ? Marketing is not a vital post for the development of the game, so replacing her would not change anything. And given she was the main target of the hate spewing from Derek and his cronies, i can't blame her to have disappeared from the game spotlight.

As for the game itself, yeah, the game progression has slowed down a lot recently. We just think it's because they are all hands on deck with Squardon 42 and hope work will resume at a higher pace when the solo campaign is finally released.

This game just continues to look like a fucking weird cult and pyramid scheme rolled into one. They found their hundreds of whales who seemingly are perfectly ok with being bled dry for tens of thousands of dollars on a game that will literally never release. But I guess kudos to them on securing a retirement fund off of people with more money than sense.

The gaming equivalent of Scientology made real.

Game has surpassed a 300m budget and is still nowhere near finished and it asks for DLC that costs thousands of dollars and things keep getting delayed.

I'm pretty sure literally no video game in history has had a budget this high solely for development.

And it's still not close to done.

stop defending this.

Here come the cultists. The whole thing is pretty cringe. No matter how delusional people can be there is always something that surprises you. This game will most likely never launch and if it does I would bet my life that it doesn't come a light year within reach of what was promised or what some poor minded people have conjured up in their heads.

SC wishes it could only be as fun as Elite Dangerous and as polished as Big Rigs.

So...what incentive do the developers have to finish the game if people are already spending so much money on it?

Why not just finish/ship the game, and update it as time goes on, like an MMO?
