Neither did I. Looking good indeed. Hey, Effect, silver lining is there was clearly a demand for a fresh OT if both of us ran in. :P

Last episode was real good. Even if the whole connection to Spock is still dumb. It felt very Trek.

I've concluded lorca is a full on villain and Michael will eventually need to take him down imo. He literally sent the admiral to die, torture etc...

"Lethe" > "Context Is For Kings" > "Choose Your Pain" > "The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry Holy Wow This Title I Mean Seriously" > "Battle at the Binary Stars" > "The Vulcan Hello"

See, I don't think he sent her to die (though I was expecting her shuttle to blow up on the way there).

Though it's clearly looking like the endgame will be between Lorca and Michael - or trippy high Stamets.

The OT might be slightly borked due to being so image heavy. If it still is that way tomorrow I'll see how/if I can fix that.
Looking good. Didn't mean to step on your toes berzeli.

Aw man I just finished making a new OT instead of copying it from GAF only to find out I was 7 minutes late. I made a post on GAF saying I'd be making it when I come in. But since you are the original creator on GAF that's all fine and dandy :))

I'll just post it here to feel good about myself lol

It doesn't strike me as quite that advanced. Just Klingons rumbling down a hallway getting ganked like Captain Lorca's Duck Hunt 64. I can see the criticism but I dig it. I'm also, admittedly, not really a canonista much anyway.
I didn't remember this but apparently it appeared in TAS and I like TAS being cannon because I thought it had good ideas,
the episode in general was really good though and this week it seems like they are finally doing a stand alone episode

If this ends with Lorca and Michael having to go at each other I would like for it to be a situation where neither one wants that confrontation to happen.

What did everyone think about the holodeck?

That was probably the first time I said "Come on!" since the start of the series, but it fits within the internal logic of the show -- if you regularly communicate via holograms that move around, I guess it makes sense that you'd have a holoroom too. For me, I've already decided in my head that this is a self-contained story that's doing its own thing, like one of the books, so I just take it as it is and go with it.

Definitely missed this thread for immediate post-episode reactions. I'm not following official articles/bts much so I was wondering if we'd see Sarek again. Really enjoyed it. Don't care about the holodeck.

This latest ep was the best yet. I will be gutted - GUTTED - if Ash turns out to be the Klingon spy. Haven't seen the Cap'n hanging out with his Tribble lately though...

Edit: Also, first Thread Watch!

So yeah, post-episode reaction: Lorca is really a butt. I wouldn't put it past the show to have him gone by the season finale as they're setting him up with some really questionable choices.

Well I guess it's an experimental maybe-section-31 ship so i can rationalize that they've picked up a lot of interesting tech in their travels. I guess....

What did everyone think about the holodeck?

I grumbled but I didn't riot. I find it a little annoying but not unexplainable. Is it really so bad to stick to viewscreens and train with other crew members? I know it's less shiny that way, but, well..they're the ones that chose to make this a prequel instead of a sequel. Even though they dont seem to actually want to make a prequel. And almost the exact same story line would have worked so well as a sequel.

I reason it away by saying that this was low res, non solid, with poor AI that could not hold a natural sounding conversation. Look at it up close and you'd see the "pixels." By the time they reach TNG it has advanced to be indistinguishable.
Sure, TAS had that recreation room which makes it not completely outlandish, but TAS has always been in questionable territory.

That, too. One of the reasons I'm really rooting for the section 31 theory is because it makes a lot of the shit going down a lot more believable.

The next episode actually broke me (time loops r hard) but it's legit so fun and great.

Glad you liked 106. It's a nice story that I thought added some good texture to Sarek and was much more than "Sarek is in danger!!!!" (But you know he lives).

(It's also technically not a holodeck)

What exactly was going on with Stamets? Dude looked high af !

And Ash Tyler is totally Voq, and if he isn't then the red herring was so erm....blunt.

Weirdly, I had more of an issue with the replicators than the holodeck. IT COMMENTS ON THE NUTRITIONAL AND CULINARY VALUE OF YOUR FOOD. How has someone not punched a replicator yet?

The hallmark Trek style camaraderie and personality quirks are really starting to show. I'm loving LSD Stamets and I'm curious to see which direction they go with kinder and gentler Burnham.

OT: Is anyone going to bother doing a General Trek thread this go around? It was pretty slow anyway I suppose.

I didn't have a problem with the "holodeck". It doesn't seem to operate the way one does. It looks like a virtual reality simulation without the headsets. An actual holodeck is immersive. You can smell things, eat things, interact with things, and the AI is very advance. This looked like a VR shooting range to me. It's the difference between the holograms they used for communication, which is just projection you can walk through and the Doctor on Voyager who could physically interact with the entire sickbay and everyone in it and then the ship itself and even outside of it.

I want to do it.
But I want to wait until Discovery has finished (or goes on Winter break) because this thread is where most Trek-Era will end up....unless ofcourse you guys want one right now.

I'm posting my little mini-review of "Lethe", which I wrote for a Facebook sci-fi/fantasy group I run. I'm omitting the beginning since it details why I was late voicing my thoughts over there this week. (Spoilers: It's related to our great exodus.)

"Lethe" wasn't perfect but it was pretty damned good. I'm a writer and I obsess over writing as a result. Crisp dialogue means the world to me and "Lethe" packs a better script than anything that came before it. Simply put, it's snappy. The interactions aboard the Discovery in particular were very strong. Burnham and Tilly are terrific together so please be excited for the inevitable emotional mayhem they get themselves into going forward.

Lorca is emerging as the show's best character though and so much of that is thanks to his actor, not his lines. His lines are good but Jason Isaacs is that much better. I was pleased with his B-Plot's ability to reveal layers in this dude. Whereas prior episodes have either shown him merely through Burnham's eyes or told us about his past through Mudd's mouth, this time we saw the world as he sees it, and it's haunted.

The core of the story, Burnham/Sarek, is where things encounter a bit of turbulence. Not much, mind you. But a bit. I dig the psychedelic nebula the shuttle traverses en route to Sarek's rescue. I dig Tyler fretting over what to do about Burnham when her connection to Sarek strains. I dig a lot of what we see and hear with the idea that Sarek chose Spock over Burnham for a big gig he never even pursued, anyway. I'm a little less enthusiastic about repeatedly having Sonequa Martin-Green and James Frain go at one-another with Vulcan martial arts as Burnham tries to bring the truth out in her surrogate father. Yeah, no, I know, I get it, y'all, it's metaphor, but it's kind of silly, too. Again, I'm a writer; I think I'd be tempted to scribble it down into a script, myself. But it doesn't entirely translate with a believable face when put to film.

We've got a new plot thread emerging in some Vulcan extremists now and as a Star Trek: Enterprise fan I'm hyped. I loved that show's ability to portray a planet Vulcan with a schism and a chip on its shoulder. I'm glad to see that schism still remains to some extent some 90-odd years later because Enterprise was cut down before its time. The Vulcan race at-large seems to be behaving more in the vein of TOS-and-beyond, which is great and it makes sense because Archer and T'Pol helped right the course, but we've still got radicals or fundamentalists or wherever they're going with this and that's going to be an ongoing threat. "The great experiment" is what those dweebs are calling the Federation and they're saying that it failed. Yeah, we'll see. Dweebs.

Now that Cornwell's well and truly fucked, Lorca's suddenly following orders to the letter and not going after her himself. Kol's got a high-tier prisoner and Dennas (the Klingon matriarch with the bedazzling head jewelry) is back after debuting in holographic form in the premiere. All well and good but what's the deal with Stamets? He was two sentences away from warping himself to 1966 with all the psychedelic rhetoric this episode. His mycellial LSD trip seems to have brought back a happier dude indeed. Is he in actuality Mirror!Stamets? Are we ready to get wild with a crew from The Other Side? Only time will tell. Remember: Tyler is Voq or I lose this season's biggest bet.
