Damnit, the shorts aren't downloadable in the Netflix app ready for the 3 hour train trip I'm about to take. Would have been great to be able to watch them on the go.
Suspect this is because of them just being shoved under the Trailer category, since all the episodes of Season 1 are downloadable.

Regarding Culber:

remember Tilly had a speck of that spore fall on her when they get back from the MU and there is a scene in the trailer where they suck something out of her, what if that's Culber, he grows back from the network?

Regarding Calypso Eps:

As far as Calypso, we don't even know what year the Discovery was abandon, it's 1000 years from an unknown year and we don't know what part of space they are in

The New York Times has posted their review of the season opener. In short: they liked it a lot more than season 1.

Why? The story does nothing, goes nowhere, contradicts continuity and is derivative of a billion similar stories and concepts.

As others have said, there's no contradiction at play here. And while I understand where you're coming from re: derivative, I don't mind. It's clearly an homage of sorts. A well-directed, terrifically-acted homage.

And here's NPR's review. Eric Deggans liked it too. (I swear 90% of it is sound clips though. <_<)

Nice reviews!

Looks like no Klingons and no Spock in the premiere

Huh, I've noticed something pretty nice, not sure if it's intentional, BUT on my Netflix (UK) the four Short Treks are under the Trailers and More section! Anyone else wanna check and see if I've not gone mad?
I'm trying to watch them on the Windows 10 Netflix app, yet there's no option for 'Trailers and More'. I can find them on the web browser version, yet I believe this is limited to 720p, and I'd much rather watch them at 1080p.

There doesn't appear to be a way to add the mini-episodes to my list. I've also tried playing for a minute, but it isn't showing up in 'Continue Watching'. Has anyone figured out a way to watch them on the app?

I thought the web browser was only limited to 720p on browsers other than Edge because other browser devs won't pay for the codecs?

I was under the impression Edge will do higher resolutions and that the Windows app used Edge for playback anyway.

I was under the impression that you need a recent Intel CPU to run at high resolution on Edge? The Windows 10 app definitely supports 1080p, which is why I've been using it.

Oh well, I suppose I'll have to use Edge for the first time ever.
Resolution
Windows computers support streaming in the following browser resolutions:

  • Google Chrome up to 720p
  • Internet Explorer up to 1080p
  • Microsoft Edge up to 4K*
  • Mozilla Firefox up to 720p
  • Opera up to 720p
  • Windows 8 app up to 1080p
  • Windows 10 app up to 4K*

*Streaming in 4K requires an HDCP 2.2 compliant connection to a 60Hz 4K-capable display, Intel's 7th generation Core CPU or newer, and the latest Windows updates. Check with the manufacturer of your system to verify specifications.
It's still weird that the official Netflix app is missing basic features. If anything, I'd expect that to be the primary version they would be developing for Windows, due to most of the browser's DRM deficiencies (Not that I think DRM is a good thing, but it's an unfortunate necessity).

Yeah, I won't be tuning in to those Facebook videos either. I deleted Facebook for a reason.

My household will :( but we'll get over it. If there are any particularly good ones I'm sure the one roommate with a Facebook account will share them in our Discord server.

Hopefully the Facebook streams will be uploaded to their youtube channel. I get why they want Facebook though. They might be able to better moderate any chat that might be there which given how people act is needed.

How did Calypso contradict continuity? It takes place 1000 years in the future.
It doesn't contradict anything because nothing has been set in the time period it takes place in.

The V'Drash or whatever meant to be a future version of the Federation, but Enterprise still has the actual Federation still operating in this period.

Everyone be sure to title your spoilers so that the thread remains easy to navigate.

(none of these are real)
Like this.
Or this. But this is a season 2 thread so I would assume S1 spoilers are fair game in here. Why tag S1 in a S2 thread? Nobody who isn't finished with S1 should be in here yet. And if they are, that's on them.
CULBER IS BACK AND HE'S A SPACE WHALE NOW.

I know nothing of these episodes yet but this is how I would title it.

Looks like I need to sign up for CBS All Access again!

Anyone have any experience with signing up through Amazon Prime? There is a 7-day free trial. I am wondering if the video quality and such is just as good as using the CBS All Access app. To be honest, it would be nice to have it via Amazon Prime Video, then I just have to deal with one app!

EDIT: Just activated the 7-day trial on Amazon Prime. Video quality looks great, watching the last episode of season 1 now.

Watched the "Runaway" and "Calypso" Short Treks and to be honest I'm not sure I can be bothered watching the other two if they're the same kind of quality. They were just pure 'meh' at best.

Oh so just like last time, Crave and Netflix watchers are treated like second class citizens and get episodes a day late. Yeah, fuck you too CBS (and probably Bell).

Well see ya tomorrow I guess.

Yeah the first 2 were fairly weak. I quite liked The Brightest Star for adding some more backstory to Saru. Escape Artist was the only genuinly good episode, though.

Curious how the streaming quality has been for CBS Access users.

I have a perfectly fine connection - more than enough to stream 4K content without issue - but every Discovery episode I get at least one instance where the stream stutters, weird artifacts briefly appear, and the quality is dropped to some horribly low (something like 480p, even) resolution. It's incredibly annoying because it would appear to be on CBS' end, and I don't have this issue with any other streaming service. Closing the app and restarting has fixed it, but obviously I'd rather not do that. Oh, and manually setting the quality to high neither prevents the quality drops or returns the stream back to full resolution.

Oh, yet another thing: the audio quality is always poor, even when the visuals are at full resolution. It constantly sounds like there's a subtle but noticeable filter applied to every character's voice. Makes them sound like a small part of their voice is coming through a voicebox. It has a kind of robotic quality.
