Great episode, well paced as well as flew by.

-That 'Red Angel' seems like it's designed to be ambiguous on angelic or demon imagery. Some of those 'wings' wound up really positioned like horns.

The Spock stuff to me seems like setup for the first Reboot movie (with the red matter) to me. Though does seem slightly different direction atm.

Wew, that was an awesome episode. I'm loving Mount's Pike! I absolutely loved Lorca in Season 1 and was so sad he'd no longer be on the show, but I have a feeling by next week I won't even notice he's gone. Mount has great chemistry with Michael and the rest of the crew.

Tilly and Stamets make me so happy.

I've been pretty critical of Kurtzman in the past but he did a great job directing. The preview for the rest of the season looked insane.
I can't wait for Georgiou to come back! Oh man. Super excited for that.

I'm happy to give CBS my money for this. I'm also taking advantage of all the other Star Trek shows and am watching every episode in order beginning with TOS.

Great episode.

How personal are personal logs? Felt kinda weird how she just jumped in and read her brothers diary? I mean the contents were more of a in case I die type but she did not know as far as I know. (Though she seemed to have a really bad feeling before going to enterprise for some reason)

They always seem to listen to personal logs when someone dies, seems like maybe they aren't as personal as you'd think, still an invasion of privacy though.

Glad to see a lot of you have enjoyed the premiere as much as I have. I really love this show and as much as I don't care about CBS All-Access, I will continue to support the show via legal means because the content here is worth it in my opinion and I hope more folks are willing to do the right thing as well and support a quality show.

As far as budget goes it's worth keeping in mind that the rest of the season probably won't look quite as pretty as the premiere. The previous showrunner was fired due to "ballooning budget expenses" and I imagine that was mostly on the premiere. So expect later episodes to be less explosive. lol. Still the trailer for the rest of the season does look really intense and I did hear the showrunner say that this season does have a much more cinematic feel to it so who knows. Either way it's an exciting time to be a Star Trek fan in my opinion.

Enjoyable episode, I liked Pike a lot more than I thought I would last year, and you can feel the tone of the show trying to pivot around his character away from Season 1

Also caught up on the shorts now they're on Netflix UK, honestly, I liked the Mudd one, Tolerated the Tilly/Saru ones, and hated Calypso

I'd consider a personal log like an officers own record of their career. They're probably required to keep one. Not a private log. For those, I'd imagine they have private logs.

Like I said, you can really see all that money up on screen. But this is one of those instances where I'd say it was very much worth it - this was sci-fi completely unrestrained and it was spectacular.

Conjecture

To reach all the points they need the spore drive.
The spore inside Tilly is actually a Tardigrade (which is what it looked like on the previews).

It sounds like Star Trek: Discovery has already been internally renewed for a season three:

Given the show's importance to CBS All Access, a third season renewal for "Discovery" is a fait accompli. Kurtzman said he intends to stick around as showrunner but he will also recruit a co-leader to help him manage the load as he also juggles other "Star Trek" projects.

It sounds like season 3 is almost certainly a go so that's exciting!

Honestly, I feel like any actual celebrating should occur if/when the show manages to get renewed for a fifth season. I realise that's rather a ways off, but it's the bar Enterprise has set.

I NEED MORE STAR TREK ERA - HELP ME

So I watched the new episode of Discovery, very good, OK, Michael flashbacks are boring but the rest was top grade. I read some comics recently, like the mirror Universe of Next Generation, Countdown (where Nero and Captain Data appears). I already read Star Trek TOS Year 4, those comics about Klingons.

I started watching some old episodes of TOS third season, I already watched Voyager and TNG, maybe watch DS9

Maybe Spock puposely lapsed security. It was clear by the message that he was expecting someone to listen to the recording as he himself was not confident that he would return to Enterprise.

Someone please explain to me why they are dedicating two seasons to follow arguably one of the weakest, least likeable protagonists since LaForge?

Pike has developed more as a character and has become more likeable and interesting in one hour than Michael Burnham.

Kill her off and give us more Saru, Stamet and Tilly (amazing characters) and this show would be infinitely more enjoyable and closer to Star Trek.

I am so done with this Burnham crap. She sucks the life out of every scene and feels almost forced.

Cant watch.

Do they show any of the Enterprise interior? I want to see a modern take on the bridge.

Funny how you picked two black actors and labelled them both boring and crap.

Loved this episode. I really hope they let the bridge crew have bigger roles in the story. It was nice seeing them speak.

I've seen these pictures floating around the net for a while claiming to be the Enterprise bridge from DSC. I believe them to be fan made (particularly because of the viewscreen) but take a look if interested.
Honestly if it ended up looking like this I wouldn't be upset at all.

That was an incredible premiere, really good to have Discovery back.

As an aside, for Canadian viewers, the premiere is available to stream on Space.ca without any sign ins. I think it will be available only until next Thursday, so make sure you watch it soon if you haven't yet.

I think she is awful and unlikeable also. The show needs step up its game with all its characters though. Lorca got so much time and was by far best character in S1, hope they don't do the same with Pike just for him to piss off at series end.

Even folks who dislike Burnham (who I do like but feel is one of the weaker links overall) have plenty to enjoy through Saru, Tilly, and Stamets. Well, plenty to enjoy if they share my opinions, that is. :P

I liked Tilly and Stamets a fair bit right out of the gate, really. Saru sort of sucked during the first half of season 1 but he's pretty great now. I'll agree that Lorca might have been the best character in the first season (and my roommates would say it in a heartbeat, even) but I find plenty of other characters fair to excellent.

I can see Manny Coto-era Enterprise doing a 4-part prequel to this if they had less even of a budget.

Lmfao.

5x11 "Strangers"
While escorting Ambassador Soval to a peace conference on the Tellarite homeworld, Enterprise picks up a distress signal from the nearby Surata system. As Archer and Soval explore Surata IV, Trip ponders his future with T'Pol.

5x12 "Mind Front"
Injured by a thorn on Surata IV, Soval must trust a highly allergic Dr. Phlox with his life. The situation is complicated when Phlox's favorite bat accidentally creates a machine which accelerates a patient's neurons. Desperate to save their relationship, T'Pol performs the Vulcan rite of Shad'Gre on Trip, subjecting him to flashbacks of previous events.

5x13 "The War Within"
Phlox convinces Soval to undergo a dangerous procedure inside the machine his bat constructed. Soval and Trip unexpectedly meet during their respective experiences and must navigate Enterprise's catwalks in an alternate past in which the ship has been boarded by Xindi. Special Guest Star Felicia Day.

5x14 "Rememory"
Soval places a beacon on Surata IV to warn future explorers to be wary of the planet's vines, but Phlox's bat eats the sign. The ship is boarded by Xindi holdouts, confirming Trip and Soval's visions were portents of the future. Ensign Mayweather gets himself trapped inside the mess hall.

My complaint about Burnham largely stems around the fact that this show is arc-driven rather than episodic. This means we get less exploration and less emphasis on the bridge crew. I'm actually surprised at how little of a talking point this is among other Trek fans.

For instance, I could not rewatch S1 because I was simply not interested in the awful Klingon storyline, nor about Burnham's relationship with Ash.

With Voyager, Enterprise, TNG and Deep Space 9, I could rewatch several seasons because the episodes are so varied with new stories and different cultures explored.

Discovery is a one-time viewing show, especially as it's driven by Burnham's narrative. The fact that Season 2 seems to follow the same theme suggests that the producers had no feedback from fans on this, and that is really disappointing.

But, yeah, great visuals though. ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

The show would be unwatchable without them. Lorca is the GOAT. I don't wanna hear different

It was known from early production that it was going to center around someone other than the bridge crew so that's not a surprise and even then, they said they would focus on them more this season. As for the episodic, that's just not what TV is now-a-days, but even then, they said there would be more exploration and more episodic style episodes this season. But it's going to be arc-driven for the most part and Micheal, like it or not, is the star of the show and not the bridge crew. If it's not your thing that's fine but that's what they are going for. Luckily there are 4 other Star Trek shows being produced, if you can't enjoy this one perhaps one of those might do it for you. The Section 31 series might lend itself to a more episodic style show, I don't now how you feel about MU Phillipa though.

For me personally I actually like the approach they have taken with Discovery. We've had so many Star Trek shows that I personally am happy that this show feels more deeper, story arc driven and really epic in scope. I've been really happy with the show so far. I have my complaints as anyone would but ultimately I love old Star Trek and I own all of Star Trek but I am glad that they are doing something new and fresh with the material these days.

Great ep. One part I didn't like though was Pike's science officer. That death scene could be seen from mile away and was just badly done.

The guy playing Pike is awesome casting and he nailed it in this episode. Tilly's character however feels really overplayed to me by this point. She was just annoying.
