Crazy thing is that had the technology been available when TNG or any of the others launched, the same would ave happened.

If Disco suddenly became too expensive I think we'd get at least a final season with more personal, smaller stories than an out right cancellation but considering how much Star Trek CBS is putting into production I think Disco is doing fine, if not great.
This. They have so many sets now I would imagine a lot of the high upfront cost might be behind them for the most part. Not to mention the sets are likely going to double for other productions like the Section 31 show or any Shot Treks they do. While Discovery might be expensive it's not like the investment is going to be limited to just the show itself. It's cost might be making other offerings cheaper in the long run.

The Ready Room: Episode 1 - Alex Kurtzman & Heather Kadin

Glad they're uploading these to youtube.

Any of this stuff true?

The tweets are kinda damning.

Anson mount experiencing unemployment is a link that Disco is dead? even though its clear that Mount can;t be the captain long term becase he's supposed to be the Enterprise captain.

Unemployment is only a worry becase they should be making him his own fucking show.

Disco isn't going anywhere and I'd not be at all shocked to see it run for 5 seasons.

Pike can only be captain of Discovery for so long before he has to go back to Enterprise and we don't see him again, I don't expect him to stick past this season if he even lasts all season long.

Finally caught up with season 2

Ok start but seems like it wont kick off until we finally see what Spock/spore parasite is about.

How they wrapped up the Klingon thread kinda sends a message they are done with them being a central part of the show.

I hope the section 31 becomes more than the obvious we do things by any means necessary / ends justify the means tropes.

May I ask...why are you watching videos from this channel? His most recent video is a sexist rant about "forced" female leads in media pointing to Captain Marvel, Star Trek, and Doctor Who lol.

In fact most of his videos look to be sexist rants attacking "SJW"/"PC Culture"/etc. He is in particular very angry at there being a woman Doctor Who lead.

I always assumed Anson Mount was a one-season thing, just like Jason Isaacs. There's nothing damning here at all.

And the season 2 premiere being on YouTube generates awareness and maybe gets people hooked. I don't see it as a sign of desperation, just advertising. Dude just seems like he wants the show to fail.

If Discovery is cancelled after 2 seasons then the streaming service is dead in the water. Nothing says "we don't have faith in our own streaming service and fans shouldn't either" than killing your 1st big flagship show without proven replacements already airing.

Most Youtube hot-takers are completely out to lunch, unfortunately.

Quick interview with Number one, can't wait to see her. So far the casting has been on point

Woah, I didn't know that Romjin was casted as Number One. Fantastic actress -- and I had the biggest crush on her when I was growing up!

I've never really watched behind the scenes stuff but these ready room stuff is entertaining, I'll keep watching as the season goes on. Also I loved hearing that the two short treks will have different animation styles, one thing I loved about TAS is how they were able to me more imaginative with the aliens and worlds.

Edit: Also in that first episode it seems like they talk about Season 3 as if it's already in production and confirmed.

I'm not going to comment anymore on this show until it gets back to Star Trek (like in Episode 2).

I think I found the link about that video on Twitter. My YouTube timeline is filled with UFO stuff, so I clearly have better taste.

Anyway what caught my eye was the comment about Sonequa Martin-Green having "enjoyed" (past tense) her relationship with the crew. Pike leaving the show wouldn't be a shock, as I commented last week, but using Burnham's relationship with the show in past tense suggests a conclusion (then again if she left the show, that would be a plus in my mind).

The rumoured 150 cost of the show. Variety reported a while ago that episodes in Season 1 were estimated to be around 8 million USD. I don't know if TV production costs are as simple as multiply each figure by the number of episodes, but suffice to say, it does bring up an interesting question of financial feasibility. Netflix may cover the first season, and even the second, but if CBS' grand ambitions to get to 4 million All-Access subscribers this year does not work, is Netflix going to finance this show itself? If Netflix are not financing Season 2, or to a lesser degree, then it certainly underlines the CBS subscription number even more so.

The idea of a show's fate being based on the success of fans subscribing to a specific digital platform to stream it....that's really harsh. Trek needs to be on network TV.

Sonequa Martin-Green is the star of the show, the sooner people start accepting that the sooner they can either enjoy the show despite her or just move on to something else.

Speaking of...

Edit: Also you don't just multiply the cost of one episode (the premier especially) across the full season, there are episodes where they are obviously low budget, for example the last episode couldn't have possibly cost half of what the premier did. That's just throwing out numbers to drive a narrative that some people are obviously trying to push.

Imagine extrapolating someone using past tense to describe their experience to mean the show is about to be cancelled.

The entire slate of Star Trek shows is all to prop up CBS All Access. The reason they're planning four more shows is ST fans have already proven they'll pay. More shows means no lull between seasons, so you never have a reason to drop your sub.

As for network TV, I honestly think ST on CBS proper would probably die on the vine. I don't think the general audience particularly wants that style of show. (The Orville dropping after becoming more TNG like sort of back up my point.) Especially on CBS, which has higher ratings thresholds than some of the other networks.

CW or Fox maybe, but CBS owns the rights, so...

Star Trek going back to network television would kill it. And with cable ratings what they are today, cable would kill it too.

It was always expected that the Captain Pike/Spock/Enterprse storyline was a one season long deal that would wrap up by seasons end. They strongly implied this in the season 2 premiere but it was always kind of a given due to the season long story arc structure of the show. So yes Anson Mount is finished with Star Trek: Discovery and is now "unemployed". Same with Ethan Peck. Their stories were only for this season and filming finished some time ago.

It would be pretty brave of CBS to cancel Discovery which means they would cancel the other Trek shows as well and there has been no evidence of this what with Patrick Stewart and others discussing the new shows on a weekly bases and it's highly unlikely that Discovery would be shit canned and the other shows green lit as that would not send a good message to the subscribers who stuck with CBS All-Access for Discovery not to mention Discovery has always been heralded as their flagship show. To cancel it after 2 seasons when they have nearly no other compelling content for CBS All-Access would signify that they don't have much faith in their own streaming service. My opinion is this then; If they cancel Star Trek: Discovery then they might as well shut down CBS All-Access and move the rest of their projects to CBS or elsewhere. I don't think any of this will happen.

CBS may very well not be satisfied with Discovery's numbers but they also know that success and launching a new streaming service takes time and content and they need the content and they need the trust from the few supporters that they DO have now. Even if they are losing some money with Discovery it still may be in their best interest to continue onwards with it at least for another season or two. Maybe as CBS All-Access grows it's userbase, shows, etc then more people will tune into future seasons of Discovery as well.

Also if Discovery was such a massive flop then why go out of their way to give Kurtzman a huge 25 million dollar contract and announce all of these new Star Trek shows (none of this happened until well after season one came and gone). Wouldn't make sense to go all in on Star Trek if the first season was such a failure.

Also even if Netflix isn't happy with their current contract with CBS, doesn't mean they can't renegotiate. Still pay a decent amount toward the show but perhaps a little less or some other deal.

Also lets not forget that Star Trek: Discovery came in at 4th most watched family show on Netflix of 2017. I hardly think those are bad numbers...

https://comicbook.com/startrek/2017/12/17/star-trek-discovery-netflix/

As far as the trolls are concerned? They hate the show SO much that many of them are trying to convince themselves that the show is a flop and/or canceled because they want this to happen so bad. Some of these channels have videos going up and all hours suggesting many of these people don't hold jobs and have no life. These are people that don't contribute anything back to society but have the audacity to shit on other peoples work. We have a word for that; Losers.

It's one thing to dislike a show or product. We all like and dislike things, myself included but it's people that sit there and put a legitimate effort spamming, shitting up fan communities, releasing false information as fact, etc that differentiates between someone who simply does not like a product and someone who is simply put a troll.

Some of these people REALLY hate Star Trek: Discovery simply because they are trying to do something new with an outdated franchise. I love all of the old Star Treks. I own all of it on the best possibly formats but I also like the fact that Discovery feels fresh and new while still honoring what came before it. Some people though are so bothered by this that they are legitimately losing sleep and have become so obsessed with destroying the show simply because it's not what THEY want. They don't like other people enjoying it and they will stop at nothing to try and ruin other people from enjoying it. Honestly many of these people realistically need mental help but that's a topic I won't delve into.

Bottom line is this: If you enjoy the show, keep enjoying it, keep discussing it. The good and the bad. Be constructive in your criticisms and in return your opinions will likely be respected (or should be). For those who don't like Star Trek: Discovery. Good news! There are many past Star Trek shows you can still enjoy and there are other Star Trek shows in development so maybe one of those will scratch that Trek itch you might have. Or... there is always the Orville as well. :)

If she reflects on what shooting season 2 was like she'd use past tense, it's not a hint that the show is over or that she's leaving.

Netflix did not finance the first or second season in any way, CBS financed it on its own and they will continue to do so. Star Trek Discovery (and by extension the planned spin-offs) exist to prop up CBS All Access and it is obviously working for them so it's going to continue. Recouping the costs by selling to Netflix internationally is convenient but not a necessity, without Netflix they'd just sell the show to other outlets.

Star Trek cannot survive on network tv, the audience isn't big enough. And how is relying on subscribers more harsh than relying on a non subscribing audience?

I'm vacationing in Colombia and Star Trek Discovery is on Netflix here and I've been powering through it. Fucking great show! Keeps much of the old Trek but also is in line with modern tv show trends, it's a fantastic mix.

When exactly do new episodes appear? Friday at 12:01 am or?

The financial structure of the show was one of the first things youtubers twisted and it keeps some people misinformed. As you said CBS financed the show on their own. What Netflix paid for the rights for the show perhaps balanced that out. Netflix itself didn't finance the show the way they do their own shows. This lie that some tried to push is what lead to the stupid talk about how Netflix was angry at CBS because of how Discovery looked, wanted out of the deal, etc. Discovery is reportedly one of the Netflix's most popular shows in addition to Star Trek in general being very popular on Netflix since it carries all the shows and seasons the way CBSAA does.

A lot of the stuff these youtubers say are based on twisting actual facts and comments and outright lying. It's an literally an alternate reality they've built for themselves and around themselves. Since they have nothing better with their lives they keep spreading this garbage. I didn't click on the like above but I can guess by what was said there that it's nerdotic's channel right? Likely spelled that wrong but don't care as the guy is garbage.

Saw the first episode now from season 2 and geez this show is so freaking ... bad? Amazing production values for a TV show I give them that but this is just spectacles (explosions everywhere yeeeah!) and references with absolutely no substance. Remember Enterprise? Remember Captain Pike? Remember Spooooock? Remember Spock´s adoptive sister? Err noo? lol
Why is this even called Star Trek? Seriously should´ve called it Mass Trek or something like that. And I can´t get over the fact that this is all PRE-TOS when everything in there is fucking high-tech compared to what the OG crew got. Why not place it waaay in the future so the tech can shine? Why must everything connected to something successful in the past we all known. God I hate whoever wrote this bullshit.

I thought like you before I actually watched the series. If you think this is bad, you need to go rewatch early seasons if Enterprise and TNG. The show is well written, decently acted and looks gorgeous.

It was only a few weeks ago when someone claimed that I was a self-hating black man because I was critical of Michael Burnham and Geordi LaForge as characters. And now, I post a random video from Twitter that deals with the show, and you're trying to conflate that one comment I made as persistent servicing of a sexist? Unbelievable.

Why would you assume I looked at his prior videos, or his channel? And why would you imply that I was persistently bringing up those points through this discussion?

You intentionally decided to cast me in the most appalling light, and did so with bold, capitalised wording to underscore your immaturity.
