I recently decided to rewatch/fully watch Voyager. I remember waking up early before school to watch it in my teens and what I saw I liked. These past two years I have watched Star Trek in this order: TNG (Love Picard but Sisko), DS9 (Best IMHO and yes I watched every episode and in order!), ENTERPRISE (did not finish), Discovery (I liked it), and now Voyager. I am really at a loss for what is going on with this show! I felt like the first 3~seasons were solid. I liked the characters and felt invested despite some reductiveness, but season 4 and after have really puzzled me. The show seems to have lost its identity and nothing is really making sense anymore. Did something happen? Were ratings low? Were the actors tired of their roles? I just can't figure out. Its like after the Week of Hell everything went bad.
I thought Voyager was pretty consistent throughout, I never noticed a drop in quality after season 3. I actually think it improved a bit later, they dropped the Kazon and Seven was a great addition.

I definitely felt like Voyager improved towards the end, even if it did lean on Seven and the Doctor too much. I actually noticed that when I saw Bryan Fuller's name on the credits, it seemed like a better episode. Funny how that didn't really work out in Discovery's favor. Disclaimer: I like Discovery.

What do you mean lost its identity? They lose some of the recurring 'bad guys' as they move out of their space, and of course Kes departs just as her character was really developing, but I don't really see how the show changed?

I guess it never did a ongoing story again like it did with Seska, Tom becoming disgruntled and eventually leaving, the traitor guy etc. Which was all leading into Basics.

I think that's what I mean. I think all of the constants of the first 3~ seasons are gone and now it seems like the show is really struggling to move forward. Also, the lack of a true sense of time. I think time was handled well in the first seasons, but now time is definitely asserted less.

When I watched the first time I seemed to enjoy the last two seasons, so it is possible that I will come around. But I am really starting to wonder how many times the ship can be taken over by aliens that are dragging them through time, in their dreams, possessing them, dousing them in psychic illusions. While I like Seven, I think that the show is becoming more of a character drama instead of a space adventure, and if that is the case then it is way less effective at this than DS9. I plan to keep watching, but I'm really starting to burn out in a way that never happened with TNG or DS9.

Yeah, seasons 4 and 5 really beat the hell out of crew, season 6 and 7 add some lighter episodes and have a more balance tone as a result, so I'd say its worth continuing.
That said I wouldn't recommend binging 4 and 5, as you need a break after some episodes.

Man Season 5 has three episodes that I always, always, skip, Extreme Risk, Once Upon a Time and 11:59. The latter two in particular are just....ugh.

Weird a lot of people prefer the later seasons of Voyager, I think it's the most consistent

Seasons 4 and 5 are peak Voyager. I think they're far and away the strongest seasons.

I'll gladly rewatch seasons 6 and 7 more frequently than 3 and especially 1 and 2 though.

We can all agree that Voyager's holodeck episodes are the worst, right? Whenever I'm watching the series on BBC America and a holodeck episode comes on, I watch something else for that hour.

"Once upon a time" and "Heroes and Demons" are utter rubbish. The Captain Proton stuff is largely awful too, though I did find the Captain Proton section of "Shattered" in Season 7 was enough to get a giggle out of me.

I like the two part episode where those aliens take over and seven/janeway are in WW2, Neetlix is with the klingons I think. Otherwise yeah the holo episodes are awful and Captain Proton is the worst out of all the Star trek recurring holodeck programs.

Don't forget about that early 1900s town that Tom makes or Janeway's da Vinci episodes. Terrible.

I think what really annoyed me about that is that they make a point of people having rationed Holodeck time, in a big part down to power/resource conservation concerns, yet they leave Fair Haven running 24/7!

Also, the bullshit about "Oh we left the program running for so long that it started to break down and the characters started to see things they weren't supposed to". Bullshit. You're telling me there aren't anything like permanently running holographic amusement parks running on Holodecks somewhere in the Federation?

Well, for the most part they compare holodeck programs to episodic TV shows or novels, with a set beginning and end. I don't think the writers had conceptualized the holodeck as a persistent MMORPG kind of thing yet.

Which holodeck episodes are the best?

Off the top of my head:
TNG: When the ship's computer comes alive and crazy stuff happens in the holodeck. I haven't seen that one in years though.
DS9: Our Man Bashir
Voyager: WW2 two parter.

I think Our Man Bashir was the best of these.

I'm at work but later I'll make a note of them all. The Marquis mutiny/Seska booby trap episode of Voyager is fantastic though imo.

I never minded Captain Proton. Always seemed fun enough nostalgia and I quite liked seeing the transition from Janeway hating it to really getting into her character 😄

I liked the silliness of Captain Proton, the one I really hated was that stupid pool party program in season 3 or so. It reeked of an executive trying add sex appeal to the show.

Did anyone really watch star trek for it's sex appeal? I mean maybe ToS, those miniskirts were probably risqué back then, but I can't imagine TNG and beyond being very sexy for a TV show.

I think 90's era Star Trek definitely had a sophomoric, "sex sells" side to it. The gif and the picture above are hardly the only examples.

I guess it's also because I didn't watch star trek until after the 2009 movie so maybe that's why it feels more cringe than anything lol

I always hated Troi's jumpsuits she wore though most of TNG. I wish they had put her in a regular uniform earlier.

Kira's cat suit from the later seasons of DS9 rarely comes up in the "sexy" uniform discussions. Does it get a pass for some reason?

I guess her uniform isn't as blatant, so it kind of flies below the radar. Kind of like how even when Troi wears a uniform, it's much more form fitting than Data's or Riker's.

1st season Kira wears the standard Bajoran uniform:
latest

She goes through several one-piece uniforms and eventually wears this:
latest

It's certainly not as blatant as Seven or Troi, but it's certainly more snug than the Chief's onesie.

Maybe putting Dax in the standard uniform keep the focus off of Kira's special uniform?

You're absolutely right about Kira, and I'm not trying to suggest it's not problematic.

No worries, I didn't think you were. I'm exploring why it doesn't come up as often as T'Pol, Seven and Troi. Maybe it's because DS9 isn't as popular as the other shows?
Honestly, I think they were just more sly about it. If Kira had her season 7 uniform in season 1, people would have picked up on it immediately, but by having her uniform change over the course of the series it didn't really sink in for people.

So I just watched S5E23 with the time terrorist, and now I am wondering if green uniform seven of nine is the one from the second silver blood episode [S5E18]. As some have pointed out online [i was pondering the same], seven of nine was not a part of the crew at that I ended. Also, even if she was I don't recall her ever wearing the green uniform before the second silver blood episode. Any thoughts?

So rating Holodeck episodes, gonna just lump them in either good, middle or bad. Only gonna list episodes were it is the main focus of problems or drama, and not just spending time on it, so all the little bits of Captain Proton here and there won't count, but something like Bride of Chaotica does. Stuff like the Baseball episode isn't about the holosuite either, they just use it a lot.

The Good
TNG - Elementary, Dear Data - The Moriarty episode, only complaint is it's a bit silly how easy the ship created an actual AI.
TNG - Hollow Pursuits - Barclay is addicted to fantasies in the holodeck, including recreations of other officers. We find out is no actual regulation against it. I guess the rules are slow to catch up with new tech, like today.
TNG - A Fistful of Datas - Data takes over Wild West characters giving them his abilities, Worf and Troi are trapped.
TNG - Ship in a Bottle - Moriarty part 2, not as good but still good.
DS9 - Our Man Bashir - Bashir and Garak in James Bond Rip off.
STV - Projections - Doc trapped on holodeck, begins to think he is real.
STV - Worst Case Scenario - B'Elanna discovers a Marquis mutiny program. Great episode.
STV - The Killing Game parts 1+2 - Hirogen take over the ship and hunt the crew in WW2.
STV - Nothing Human - Recreation of a Cardassian doctor is needed to help B'Elanna, but he commited horrific crimes to gain his knowledge.
STV - Bride of Chaotica - Real aliens invade the Captain Proton simulation. Fantastic episode.
STV - Pathfinder - Barclay back at it, recreating Voyager this time.
STV - Spirit Folk - Fair Haven malfunctions and characters realise crew not who they say they are. It's a fun light-hearted episode.
STV - Flesh and Blood parts 1+2 - Hirogen at war with escaped holocharacters.
STV - Human Error - Seven uses holodeck to fantasize about dating.

The Middle
TNG - 11001001
- More of a B part of the story, Riker creates a woman for some fun and plays the trombone.
DS9 - It's Only a Paper Moon - Nog hides in the holosuite to deal with losing a leg. Boring personally.
DS9 - Badda Bing Badda Bang - The Vic Ocean's 13 episode. I find it stupid.
STV - Heroes and Demons - Doctor has to play hero in a Beowulf story to save the crew.
STV - Real Life - Doctor creates holofamily.
STV - Extreme Risk - B'Elanna does dangerous stuff on holodeck to deal with all her Marquis friends being killed by The Dominion.

The Bad
TNG - The Big Goodbye - First holodeck episode. Picard plays old timey PI and is amazed at how the holodeck is so real. Kinda boring and doesn't quite get how holodecks work right compared to later episodes (the characters can leave the holodeck for a short period, other transfers like lipstick remain).
TNG - Manhunt - Troi's mum, more Picard PI.
TNG - Booby Trap - Geordi romances a holodeck character based on a real person.
DS9 - His Way - Enter Vic. The Odo/Kira get together episode.
STV - Alter Ego - Harry and Tuvok both become interested in a holodeck character.
STV - Once Upon a Time - The Wizard of Oz type thing with Naomi Wildman.
STV - Fair Haven - Janeway and the Irish Pub owner.

Was a few episodes I was unsure to count, like the Da Vinci episode on the planet, or the evil Barclay program one. Those are more characters than the holodeck itself, but they still from it just that the mobile emitter lets them loose. They both good episodes imo.
