So since I saw in the Star Trek Discovery OT ( https://www.resetera.com/threads/star-trek-discovery-ot-to-boldly-go-into-the-new-streaming-era.708/ ), there isn't a Star Trek franchise OT to discuss the rest of Star Trek (ranging from the TV shows to the movies, books, novels, videogames and comics), I guess I'll make an attempt to make one.

So, Star Trek is a sci-fi franchise that is well known that was created by Gene Roddenberry and has continued long after his death.

In late 2017, famed director Quentin Tarantino pitched an original movie idea for Star Trek to Abrams and Paramount, both were reported to be enthusiastic about having Tarantino involved with Star Trek and a December 4, 2017 Deadline report stated that Paramount and Abrams was to assemble a writers room of scribes who would listen to Tarantino's pitch and assemble a movie with Tarantino as director and Abrams as producer: http://deadline.com/2017/12/quentin-tarantino-star-trek-movie-jj-abrams-1202220032/

Later in December 2017, Deadline reported that the Tarantino Star Trek movie was moving along with Paramount selecting Mark L. Smith as screenwriter for Tarantino's Star Trek movie which has been reported to be targeting an MPAA rating of R which would make this movie the very first R rated Star Trek movie in the franchise, Deadline reports that Tarantino wants to direct the movie and have Abrams on as producer, Deadline also reports that Tarantino was promised by both Paramount and Abrams that he would be allowed to direct an R rated Star Trek movie: http://deadline.com/2017/12/quentin...s-the-revenant-paramount-pictures-1202231379/

APRIL 27, 2018 UPDATE: Paramount has announced a successor movie (tentatively titled Star Trek 4) to the Kelvin timeline Star Trek movies, the director who was chosen according to Variety was S.J. Clarkson, she is going to be the very first female director for the Star Trek movie franchise, Variety also reports that according to their sources, Tarantino's R-rated Star Trek movie is still being worked on and is expected to be released after this tentatively titled Star Trek 4 movie: http://variety.com/2018/film/news/s-j-clarkson-star-trek-4-chris-pine-chris-hemsworth-1202787592/

AUGUST 6, 2018 UPDATE: CBS is producing a new, currently untitled, Star Trek series for CBS All Access that will feature Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard and will also have a behind the scenes role as executive producer of this new Star Trek CBS All Access series.

It's been confirmed this is not a reboot of Star Trek: The Next Generation but a continuation of Picard's life. It's speculated that this series will be taking place 20 years after the events of the last TNG movie, Star Trek: Nemesis.

Stewart stated that in this series, it's most likely that Picard won't be a Captain and that a script has not been written yet for this series.

Videogames, Books, Novels, Comics

Star Trek has a large amount of videogames, books, novels and comics, the amount would be too long to list in this post but this OT is for discussion for the entire franchise.

I guess I can start us off, due to a recent sale on Amazon I bought a few Star Trek books.

Star Trek: Enterprise
By the Book

Star Trek: Voyager
Pathways

Star Trek: Discovery
Desperate Hours

I'll probably read Desperate Hours when Discovery finishes airing though I know it's a prequel and other than DH I have no idea of the other trek books are good but hey they can't be as bad as the shows!

Actually, there was a "quick and dirty" OT, but with no real information and everybody just hot dumps their shit into the Discovery thread anyway, so...
Search won't find it until you select titles only, because the search goes back to Jan 25th and that thread had its last post on Jan 17th.

As for this effort: that font isn't very readable.

I've changed the font for the OP, I hope it's easier to read.

I have to say I really love Star Trek VI and it's my favourite Star Trek movie. 2 and 4 are great too but 2 has been tarnished a bit by being copied so many times. Anyway 2, 4 and 6 show how great Trek can be. 1, 3 and even 5 were fine. The TNG movies were alright. First Contact is fun even though movie Picard is almost a different character than TV Picard. And the reboot franchise has been mediocre. The first one was basically Hero's Journey with a Star Trek skin. The 2nd one was an insultingly bad reboot/remake/reimagining of ST2 (again after they already did it with Star Trek Nemesis), and the 3rd one was like a mediocre big budget episode of TOS.

I'm looking forward to the Tarantino movie. The series really needs a good kick in the pants. I just hope it isn't a time travel/alternate universe plot even though Tarantino has specifically said his favourite episodes were time travel (City on the Edge of Forever) or alternate universe (that TNG episode he mentioned in the podcast).

I still worry about the current Abrams run of movies losing steam, then they will inevitably reboot TNG.

TNG can't and shouldn't be rebooted
TOS worked because people remember the classic light-hearted fun and 60's cheese
TNG is seen as stilted, serious, dramatic nerd stuff... they would be remaking it, not rebooting it

Well, regarding TNG, Sir Patrick Stewart stated in this The Hollywood Reporter interview that he would be willing to reprise his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard if Tarantino directs a Star Trek movie: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/h...card-role-tarantino-directs-star-trek-1065667

"People are always saying to me, 'Will you be Jean-Luc Picard again?' And I cannot think that would be possible, but there are ways in which something like that might come about," the iconic actor told The Hollywood Reporter, speaking from the sidelines of the Dubai International Film Festival, where he received an honorary award.

"But one of my dreams is to work with Tarantino. I admire his work so much, and to be in a Tarantino film would give me so much satisfaction. So, if he is going to direct something to do with Star Trek and there was the possibility of dear old Jean-Luc showing up again and doing that for Mr Tarantino, I would embrace it."

Stewart said one thing was sure about a Tarantino-directed Star Trek installment: it would be gripping.

"The one thing that characterizes all of his movies is that frame by frame, it always challenges, always demands your attention, always demands a very kind of open and generous response to what he does," he said. "I also love his sense of humor as a filmmaker. So yes, he would be my first choice."

Yeah, feel kinda like "Meh" after they blew up Vulcan.

So, TNG, Discovery and Deep Space Nine, pretty much never happened?

All the events did happen, within the Prime timeline. The Abrams movie series is set within a totally separate but parallel timeline that's referred to as the Kelvin timeline.

Nice to have a general Trek thread again.

Already did my TNG/ENT rewatch about 6 months ago. Might do DS9 this year.

Still working through Stargate again with the wife (her first time) and then we have BSG and Farscape for her to enjoy :P

The only place they didn't happen is within about 6 hours and 22 minutes of the Kelvin Universe portrayed in the films.

In the other 500+ hours of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, Disco, and 10 motion pictures, they happened.

640

Starring:

    • William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk
    • Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock
    • DeForest Kelly as Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy, also known as "Bones"
Fixed! The others were never part of the main cast, you didn't include minor recurring characters for the other shows either.

If you want to watch the TV series as they fit into the proper timeline of Star Trek, it would go like this:

  • Enterprise (set during 2150s)
  • Discovery (set during 2256 - ????)
  • The Original Series (set during mid to late 23rd Century)
  • The Animated Series (set during late 2260s)
  • The Next Generation (set during late 24th Century)
  • Deep Space 9 (set during 2369-2375)
  • Voyager (set during 2370s)

Watch them in release order, just like everything that that has multiple installments. Besides being good general advice, if you went chronologically with Trek you'd be starting with Enterprise, which is considered the bottom of the barrel by most of the fandom. The world's introduction to Trek was the TOS - so just start there.

If you want to skip stuff, I think a lot of people would agree that you could skip the Animated Series. I have never seen it, so I don't have anything more to offer on that subject.

As for what they do different, they're really all a product of the times they released in. I can't really put it any other way than that.

I'd be fine if they abandoned the TNG/DS9/VOY era forever. Nothing good can come from following up on VOY and Nemesis.

The only thing you need to know is that Captain Killy is the best captain.

Hey, neato.

Can anyone make a summary of what all the star treks do different and maybe make a recommendation or advice regarding watching order?

It's hard to delineate exactly what makes each of them specifically different from each other - they different from each other in different ways, and both the tone and quality of the shows changes between each and even within the same show.

However, they are ALL - with the exception of Discovery (so far) - shows about exploring space, meeting different cultures and either finding ways to co-exist with them or go to war with them. That's basically what Star Trek is about, with a dose of moral idealism on top - and some shows have that less than others.

- DS9 is the morally gray one where the good guys sometimes do bad things and the bad guys are complex and sometimes change, although it takes a which for this to build up. It's the most serialised show - by the end of it, arc episodes are more common than standalones. Takes place on a space-station but that isn't as big a difference as people sometimes say it is.

- TNG really focuses on the diplomacy side of things and is on a spaceship. Entirely episodic, for the most part, so there are no continuing stories to really worry about with the exception of the Borg and some Klingon stuff.

- Enterprise is all over the place. The show was failing so they made big changes to it in season 3, then again in season 4, and then it got cancelled. Some decent stuff there but I couldn't characterise it other than 'it's set in the 22nd century and the cast is boring'.

- I haven't watched enough of Voyager to give a good impression of it. It seems like a knockoff of TNG. The idea in that show is Voyager is a spaceship which ends up on the other side of the galaxy and has to get home, but most episodes just seem to be like random TNG episodes with characters I don't like.

- Discovery has only been on for 13 episodes and is by FAR the most different of them all. Some people are enjoying the fast-pace and constant plot twists, but to me it feels like a bit of a formless mess. However, it's got the advantage of being on now.

TNG, DS9 and Voyager all have a lot in common. They were made by the same groups of people, same decade, they all even look and sound the same for the most part. However, Voyager is largely considered worse than the other two. DS9 and TNG generally fight for the top spot.

I still think the best single way to get into Star Trek in general is just to look up the episodes from whatever series you want that are considered the best. There are so many bad and/or boring episodes of Star Trek over the 700 or so that exists, that if you accidentally hit on a run of those near the start, you'll never see the good stuff. And a lot of the bad or boring stuff simply isn't worth watching, even to me.

The best of lists are generally good places to start. It's what I did recently with Voyager and hey, those episodes were pretty good! However when I went back to season 1 of Voyager to get more indepth, I discovered it sucked! I'm sure there are more good episodes but I feel like I've already seen the best of that show and that's enough for me.

Hey, neato.

Can anyone make a summary of what all the star treks do different and maybe make a recommendation or advice regarding watching order?
A quick summary of the special things about each series:
- TOS: Very lighthearted series that establishes the major rules of the franchise and excells in terms of character dynamics between the three main characters.
- TNG: A more calm, serious reimagining of the TOS formula, with a stronger focus on social issues and the science aspect. TOS could be rather arbitrary in that aspect, TNG is stricter (though of course it is not describing reality ;))
- DS9: Much more serialised. After a three seasons, a war that dominates the main path of the story starts and it basically explores the question of what one can do to protect alleged paradise without ruining paradise via your own actions. Plays on a space station rather than a space ship, which makes the stories more local. DS9 has probably the most varied cast of relevant characters.
- VOY: Basically a more action-oriented variant of TNG, where the special idea is to have Voyager isolated from federation. Most of the time, Voyager is technologically superior to other species they meet, so ethical discussions often revolve around the first directive
- ENT: First series chronologically, and more serialised than the other series except DS9, but set on a space ship. It gets better with time and has two really outstanding characters (T'Pol and Shran).

Order: I'd personally say TNG, then DS9, even though I like DS9 more than TNG. But TNG is important to understand the rules of the universe and to appreciate the contrast and main topic of DS9. Then watch the other series as you like, if you enjoyed TNG and DS9.

When they decide to reboot the movies I hope they do it in a new era (Maybe between TOS/TNG) with new crew and a more standalone story/universe. Even if they stick to the Kelvin Timeline, I hope they separate themselves from the shows entirely.

You just have to commit and watch most of it in release order in my view, but maybe watching all the TOS movies before jumping to TNG. In my recent rewatch (after just picking up a variety of episodes jumbled up when I was a kid), I skipped the animated series and Voyager, and started watching Discovery as it started.

I'd say like at least 50% of it on the whole is lesser Star Trek, but even the weaker stuff weaves into the greater fabric of Star Trek as a whole. TNG is a great example, where the vast majority of the plots are self contained episodes, but you're still learning about different species, technology, ideologies etc. There are episodes featuring Klingons that are not all that entertaining, but attention to detail is being paid to depicting the Klingons, and their relationship with the Federation.

It's also fun to see cast member's names showing up with a Director credit, and they sometimes cast great character actors in guest roles.

Edit: I just saw the suggestion that Danny Pudi should play reboot Data and Donald Glover should play reboot Geordi.

Have to say, I can understand skipping Voyager. But if you can just watch most of the Doctor/Seven/Barclay episodes, do it.

I think it's great that Paramount is letting Tarantino make an R-rated Star Trek movie, and I'll probably go see it, but to be honest I really just want Justin Lin to get another shot with his own movie (as opposed to coming in and putting a movie together with Orci's scraps). Beyond is one of my favorite Star Trek movies, and I'm still really salty that Paramount sent it out to die the way they did.

I bet by the time the movie actually comes out Tarantino will barely be involved.

That idea is just too damn silly to actually happen.

Part of the reason I feel like its gotten this far is everyone knows they have to agree and say yes because the second QT has time to actually think about it he will back.

Watching Order is release order, maybe skip TOS if the campiness is too much. Though I still think it's worth watching.

TOS

Low-budget 60's camp. But, despite all of this manages to tell some powerful stories that still resonate today exploring social issues of its time. A world where a Russian, an Asian, a Black woman, and even an alien can all work together peacefully as part of a United Federation.

TNG
It's basically TOS except done even better. The budget is bigger, the majority of the camp is removed. And, so what you are left with is a serious sci-fi drama that is about exploring the galaxy and all the various possibilities that could entail. Now, not every show is a serious exploration of ethical and moral dilemmas, but when those are the focus they hit hard. You'll also have plenty of fun light episodes, Sherlock Holmes cosplay adventures, action-heavy episodes, and just all around great character episodes. TNG is everything you want in a Star Trek show, it has a little bit of everything.

DS9
Arguably peak Star Trek, at least for me. Check your Starship at the space dock because this Trek show isn't aboard a Starship and we ain't exploring the galaxy, at least not at the start. Deep Space Nine is set on the titular station, a former Cardassian Military Space Station transferred to the Federation and Bajor after the Cardassian occupation of Bajor has ended. It's Commander Benjamin Sisko is tasked with operating the station while attempting to help Bajor recover from its occupation and hopefully join the Federation. A task easier said than done. Eventually, a galaxy spanning war is introduced into the show and we see the ideals of Trek tested to its limits. This is Star Trek at its "darkest" but not its most cynical. It's about exploring the limits of blind optimism and humanitarianism in the face of war and annihilation. It's also the Trek that explores its cast of characters most deeply, every character gets some all-star development, even those you think are silly little minor characters.

Voyager
Arguably the Worst Trek. If you just want to watch TNG again then Voyager is your show. But, its TNG done again with a premise that clashes with this execution. A Starship stranded out in the Delta Quadrant thousands upon thousands of light-years from home, trying to make their way back by any means they can. Yet, despite a few complaints here and there you'd never guess these spry Starfleet officers were ever in any danger or missed home or aren't all Starfleet Officers. Voyager just wants to be TNG again, but with a more boring cast, and less interesting stories. It's decent comfort T.V. and still an alright show, but compared to its peers it's far from great.

Enterprise
A mixed bag and often tied with Voyager for worst Trek show. It takes place before all of the other shows, indeed before the founding of the Federation. Instead, we follow the adventures of the first ever USS Enterprise and its Captain, Jonathan Archer. Here the crew goes off and attempts to explore the galaxy as the sole intergalactic ship from Earth, attempting to show that humanity can stand on its own without the help of the Vulcans. Eventually 9/11 happens in real life so the show decides to have a similar type of event happen in the show. As a result, the show becomes more about preventing another "9/11" type attack on Earth as a Temporal Cold War becomes a larger focus of the show. The concept is neat but the execution is flawed, there are some great standout episodes, but a lot of stinkers. Enterprise ends just as it seemed to find its footing.

Oh I didn't know Barclay was in it! Yeah I was probably thinking I'd do a best of, but I do remember thinking it was way worse than TNG or DS9 on the whole.

Edit: I'm of the view that TNG and DS9 are peak Trek, but I think Discovery has a lot of potential. I would like it to slow down a bit going forward though.

Nice work, OP!

Regarding Voyager; The Doctor and Seven are the only things that make that show tolerable for me

People at work think of me as a Star Wars nut.. though I do enjoy Star Wars quite a bit, I consider myself more of a Trek fan

DS9 is my fave show from the series, TNG very close 2nd...
TOS/Enterprise/Voyager/Discovery is hard to classify their orders

If you are a fan of TNG/Voyager/DS9 I highly recommend watching The Orville, I thought it was gonna be shitty as fuck with Seth M running it (I loved Family guy early on, it became unwatchable for me at some point and I stopped) but it was a delightful season to binge watch when it finished airing and I can't wait for season 2. It very much feels like a great successor to TNG, and there is surprisingly very little humor episode to episode.

Now then... how is Discovery? I'm waiting till the season ends to watch but the few article headlines I saw didn't seem very promising. I figure I'll buy a CBS Pass for a month, binge it all, and then cancel.

Also for any other sci fi nerds, Altered Carbon airs tomorrow on Netflix, the biggest TV budget for a show in history (bigger than Crown/Game of Thrones) so should be interesting. Expanse season 3 starts up again as well sometime this year.

After TFA/TLJ I kinda feel like Star Wars isn't for me anymore, I will always love the original trilogy but new stuff wise, I really look forward more to new Star Trek movies and shows and games. Gonna do a rewatch of the entire franchise from nuts to bolts this summer I think.

I've been working on Deep Space 9 since late December. I screwed up the order and ended up watching the majority of voyager over the course of the last year, which with either make Deep Space Nine look amazing and Voyager worse or just make me one of those "Voyager people". So far, two seasons in Deep Space Nine is less fun but handles the heavy subject matter well. Making a con man and spy two of the major characters is a risk that seems to pay off. I'm aware that the best of Deep Space Nine is yet to come, so I'll continue to chip away at until it really clicks.

I've pretty much refused to watch The Orville becomes it looks like a retread of TNG. Now, I like TNG quite a bit, but I'm not interested in an exact copy of TNG. I already watched TNG, if I want to see TNG again I'll watch TNG. I don't want to watch knock-off TNG.

If you don't cry when you watch "The Visitor," you have no heart.

Farscape is pretty good fun. Rick and Morty does some similar stuff to trek.

I thought it was different enough from TNG to be interesting, and all the tech and stuff of course has been updated for 2017 but I guess its very much a YMMV thing. I could see the arguments both ways about how much it clones TNG but I thought the story lines differed in ways that made it really interesting, the outcomes felt much more nuanced than the usual "this side is good...this side is bad" early TNG episodes.

I see Orville as a dumbed down TNG ( I don't mean that in a bad way), a friend of mine who wasn't into sci-fi at all but she really enjoyed Orville and I doubt she'd like any of the older ST shows, she might like Discovery but I haven't recommend it to her yet, she's just getting into sci-fi.

Orville is Seth Macfarlane's TNG fanfiction, just steals ideas that have already been done by better shows

There's already an OT, PLUS someone already claimed the OT in the OT claiming thread. While this has a lot of work put into it, it shouldn't exist separately.

I saw a post in the Star Trek Discovery OT stating there wasn't a OT for the franchise on ERA.

I tried it, but frankly I can't recommend it to anyone unless you like Family Guy and aren't that bothered about space ship shows.

You say little humour, I say little that was funny, but waaay too many failed attempts. Oh, and we have to say dick a lot.

Harumph.
