Put it this way, if Rey was always supposed to be a Palpatine, why would Daisy say in interviews that she thought the answer was given in TFA?

I'm certain she was meant to be Luke's daughter, since the entirety of The Force Awakens implies a special bond between her and Luke, but you can't use that any more once Ben tells her that her parents were nobodies. Luke dying doesn't exactly help, either, and it's not like the two actually got on at all in The Last Jedi.

So plans would have had to change - and you can't really blame Abrams for not liking Johnson's ideas and ignoring them when Johnson didn't like Abram's ideas and ignored them.

Because she wasn't supposed to be a Palpatine. No offense to Jason, but this sounds like him running interference for Disney again by deliberately twisting something he heard to make it sound different ("Rey being a Palpatine was one idea Abrams proposed in 2014" becomes "Abrams preferred Rey to be a Palpatine when making TFA").

why would luke abandon a child to slavery?

Because she was taken from him.

3 oscar nominations for The Rise of Skywalker. Pretty impressive given that Endgame only got 1 nomination.

I decided to rewatch the Disney Star Wars films before I do a 2nd watch of TROS. I skipped Solo though, I didn't feel it was necessary yet. The only film I'd watched more than once before this is TFA. Anyway, my opinions on them have changed a little bit, so I'm going to adjust my Famitsu scores on them.

The Force Awakens 34/40 > 33/40
Rogue One 33/40 > 34/40
The Last Jedi 33/40 > 34/40

The people who were so mad about Luke cutting himself off from the Force and going to live as hermit would have been ok with him abandoning his child to a life or servitude on a desert planet?

It's because people blew Daisy's comments out of proportion.

I thought a lot was answered in 'The Force Awakens'. Then after the screening I went for a drink with my agent and everyone, and we were chatting away and I realized that oh, in their minds it's not answered at all!

Nothing about "the answer being given in TFA." Simply lots of teasing shown in TFA and some of Rey's backstory was glimpsed, but nothing anything concrete was given.

She says she thinks she knew who Rey was related to. Wonder if it really was Palpatine all along

Seems super unlikely to me anyone auditioning for the role would've been told anything like that.

So plans would have had to change - and you can't really blame Abrams for not liking Johnson's ideas and ignoring them when Johnson didn't like Abram's ideas and ignored them.
And if JJ had said to Rian, "Rey is a Skywalker/Solo/Kenobi/Palpatine, make sure to carry that through" or if TFA had committed to Rey being the child of someone important, that'd be one thing. But far as anyone knows, the former didn't happen and TFA left the matter completely open-ended. Answering a question where the questioner made no intent behind it clear is quite a different thing from answering a question and then saying later "Actually that answer was wrong, the truth is completely different."

I mean, isn't that exactly what "in their minds it's not answered at all" is implying though? She thought it was answered, most people didn't. Meaning from Daisy's perspective the movie did provide an answer. Of course it's also possible that it was clearer when they were in the middle of production, either from scenes that were shot but dropped/reworked or just from the direction JJ was giving her on set, that didn't then come through in the final cut.

Personally I don't think JJ knew what he wanted the deal to be with Rey's backstory on TFA -- whether she was a Skywalker or a Kenobi or someone else important, or from no one important at all. And I think the frantic production on TFA, coupled with the fact that as far as he knew continuing and finishing this story wasn't going to be his problem anyway, just made it easier not to commit to any one idea about it and leave that for Rian and Colin to deal with. I do believe the Rey Palpatine idea was not something that came up until he was brought back for TROS. The way Terrio has talked about and defended that idea, and what it means for the whole saga, makes it sound to me like an idea he and JJ came up with together rather than something JJ had planned five or six years prior.

I don't like that people can't complement TROS without some backhanded comment, but I'll eventually get over the salt.

Anyways...

Saw it a sixth time in the theaters yesterday. It's a movie I enjoy more and more upon rewatches. Always catching something new from it.

Which is nice as I soured on TPM and AOTC as time went on. TFA I freaking loved on opening night and still do just slightly less so. TLJ I was mixed on but over time and rewatches just settled into that it was just really average with some wooden dialogue. I think ANH, RotS, and TROS are the only movies where I appreciate them more either over time or upon rewatches.

I don't know. I'm not Abrams and even he probably didn't know. Might be why Johnson scrapped it.

If I had to come up with something, though? I'd have said Luke never left her anywhere. That her mother fled with her when the Jedi Temple was attacked but Jakku was as far as she could get before the First Order found them. The only way her mother could ensure her safety was to lure the First Order away and they shot her ship down just as it left orbit, totally unaware they were leaving Rey on Jakku alone.

Luke then feels his wife die and believes their daughter died too. The grief is too much for him and he disappears.

Clearly that's not how it panned out, though. I know Era has this thing where it tries to shift the blame from Johnson to Abrams for literally every little thing because it has some odd belief he's incapable of doing any wrong, but Daisy Ridley knew who Rey's parents were and when she saw the first screening of The Force Awakens she believed it told you.

So clearly the information is there, in The Force Awakens, and we're meant to rewatch that movie with the knowledge of who her parents are and say "oh yeah the movie teased that all along". Which implies to me the matter wasn't open-ended at all, but Abrams just didn't provide a concrete answer because that's a big moment for another movie.

Or would you have preferred Abrams did as Johnson did and simply left the next movie with no plotlines to go with?

I've lurked many of the Star Wars threads on Resetera but this finally seemed like the safest thread to share my opinion. I'm 27, grew up on the original trilogy, saw the prequels as they came out and now have been actively following the Disney era.

Honestly my favorite Star Wars content has been under Disney. The Force Awakens is my favorite film, I love the other two sequels, The Mandalorian, Jedi Fallen Order, the Battlefront 2 campaign and the spin off films. I have yet to dive into rebels. I never cared for episode 1 or 2 growing up, I did enjoy 3 but honestly I was more of a casual fan until the Disney era. They have really solidified my interest in the franchise and deep lore.

In short, i agree with most criticisms (TFA = ANH, TLJ having pointless parts, TRoS being fast paced and a bit retconny) but I still love this era and really appreciate Disney creating content that's made me more of a "hardcore" Star Wars fan.

And I just love those final 40 minutes. It's so good.

Wow. Most impressive. My record was seeing TPM four times. I think I saw TFA and TLJ three times each. I think I'm good with TRoS at two until it's out on disc.

I was still a teen by the time ROTS came out but I saw that twice. TFA I think I saw four times. RO three times. TLJ twice. Solo once. And this...well yeah. ^_^'

So yeah, I guess it's my most watched SW film in theaters.

So that's five for The Force Awakens, four for The Last Jedi and three for The Rise of Skywalker? Not bad really. I think The Force Awakens is the only one to win any, though.

Yeah, I think TFA was the only one to win an award from the Academy, but I think TROS has a realistic chance at two of those awards this year.

MAZ: You already know the truth. Whomever you you are waiting for on Jakku, they're never coming back...but, there's someone who still could.
REY: Luke.

This is the most direct way TFA addresses who Rey's parents are and the suggestion is quite clear that Luke isn't one of them and whoever they are, they aren't coming back. So actually both TLJ and TROS' reveals still align with this, but it pretty clearly rules out Rey Skywalker or Rey Solo, both of which people have sworn up and down was what JJ really wanted.

Or would you have preferred Abrams did as Johnson did and simply left the next movie with no plotlines to go with?
lol. Dare to dream that a Star Wars plotline could be more than just a continued fixation on a character's parents.

I've also generally enjoyed the Disney era, particularly compared to prequel era Lucas -- and not so much because of those movies themselves, I just had no interest in any of the Clone Wars/prequels setting, aesthetics, etc. and was really bored of droids vs. clone troopers quickly. If I have one big complaint about Disney's management of the franchise compared to late 90s/00s Lucas, it's that the video games have taken a huge step back. There are so fewer of them now, and as much as AAA dev times and costs are a big factor in that it's also clear that Lucasfilm has been extremely difficult to work with on this. The loss of Lucasarts really sucked for SW games.

It's actually a somewhat common occurrence for me to like Star Wars movies more with each rewatch! Rogue One sprang up from like a 7 to a 9 over time, for example. I think TROS has gone from a similar 7 to about an 8.

I can def see Williams winning for it being his last Star Wars score. And even though he's won Oscars before, I could see this being the kind of thing where the Academy gives an award for one movie that's really meant to double as a lifetime achievement Oscar.

Disney has produced some very good Star Wars content, yeah. I tend to think they've only made one bad movie and one bad TV show and the rest are pretty fun, so that's a fantastic run so far. As you say, the videogames are pretty neat so far too - I loved Fallen Order a lot and, while I've never played it myself, I do hear good things about the Battlefront 2 campaign.

I'm very interested in where they go from here. They seem intent on establishing their own era some centuries before the fall of the Republic, so will everything - movies, TV shows and games - take place in this "High Republic" era? Or will we continue to explore the galaxy both during and after the Empire?

I forgot about RotS. I saw that once in theatre and it was enough for me. I was very done with the PT at that point despite having (mostly) enjoyed the last one. Took a few years to get over my cynicism in the "People Vs. George Lucas" era but ended up liking Sith the most of the PT overall.

Maz: Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku, they're never coming back. But there's someone who still could.

Poe: SOMEHOW, PALPATINE RETURNED.

Rey: Rey Nobody was perfectly fine and I take it all back.

Cool

I'm okay with him going off and doing his own thing.

Have a Star Wars future free of any baggage of previous films. Bring in more women directors.

Would love to see a Patty Jenkins or Deborah Chow lead movie!!

I want him to do another one. There's going to be baggage no matter what. Yeah, some people will "boycott" it but I think he deserves another one. I think he's the only writer/director I'd want to see get another one though.

I would also love to see some new voices as well. I'm be all for a Patty Jenkins Star War. Let's get some new perspectives and ideas.

Patty Jenkins did say the wait for Wonder Woman 3 would be longer than the gap between 1 and 2, and while the implication almost certainly wasn't "because I'll be directing Star Wars in between them" that would be cool if it worked out. Chow might be getting prepped to do it someday too, but she'll be busy on Obi-Wan for the next year and a half to do the 2022 movie probably.

I wonder, assuming Black Widow goes well and she'd up for doing another blockbuster so soon, if they would reach out to Cate Shortland for it.

I disagree, I think since we are post-ST and if the next director is not any of the previous directors of SW I think that would get a lot of people excited in the same way when JJ and Rian were announced back when the Sequel Trilogy was just starting up.

And since the story won't be connected to the Skywalker Saga, everyone would pretty much go in with the same expectations. A new story, in a different time period with a new creative team helming it.

But if you have a Rian or JJ come back, you're going to have some segment of fans that would be upset and not go see the movie. That's not something I think Lucasfilm would be thrilled with. And plus the rest of us have to deal with that being the discussion and it turning toxic again.

I'm okay with an actual fresh start and to have all these white dude directors put their money where their mouth is and step aside for more POC and women directors.

I think genre fans can often be too short-sighted when it comes to directors. Patty Jenkins was great before she went into superhero filmmaking, but hadn't done anything like that before. There are so many talented PoC and female directors out there who aren't in mainstream nerd action filmmaking who just need to be given a shot.

We get caught up on these names like Villanueve, Johnson, Coogler, Waititi, Jenkins etc etc. But the point was that talented people are everywhere, not just already the people making superhero movies. These names were doing cool things before and just needed the shot at doing other cool stuff too.

Go fund the next Party Jenkins, not just hire her to do another variation on your favorite genre film.

I do agree with you there but I also think, we're not going to get away from toxicity in this fandom. It's just never going to leave altogether which to me, isn't enough to exclude a great writer/director from making a Star Wars movie.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't think Rian should be doing the first High Republic film or anything. I think there should be some time away from the ST before he gets another shot.

I am the complete opposite. When I rewatch Star Wars movies it's either I liked them at 1st viewing and find issues but still liked them and may like them more, or a movie that isn't so good on 1st viewing would get worse on rewatch since the flaws stick out more but there would be enough good to prevent it from being the worst. It's why I fear rewatching TROS this year, because I was already critical on the movie and I might be more so on the rewatch. Last month I was really critical on TPM and AOTC when I rewatched the 8 main Star Wars movies before TROS.
