I am the complete opposite. When I rewatch Star Wars movies it's either I liked them at 1st viewing and find issues but still liked them and may like them more, or a movie that isn't so good on 1st viewing would get worse on rewatch since the flaws stick out more but there would be enough good to prevent it from being the worst. It's why I fear rewatching TROS this year, because I was already critical on the movie and I might be more so on the rewatch. Last month I was really critical on TPM and AOTC when I rewatched the 8 main Star Wars movies before TROS.

Honestly, this strikes me as the more common occurrence between the two! I've encountered more folks saying what you've said than what I said. For me, I think it's a matter of learning to love what works and accept the flaws that don't. This doesn't always happen; I don't think I'll ever truly like Attack of the Clones (though I don't find it insufferable). But it has happened with four out of five of the Disney-era flicks. (My opinion on TFA has never shifted upward, but it's always struck me as a good movie so that isn't such a bad thing.)

Solo is the only one I'm still not thrilled with but my December rewatch cranked it up from a 5 to a 7? Progress!

The success of Knives Out increases the chances of RJ directing another Star War. He cemented himself as a director with amazing critical reception and great box office numbers ->

He created a new franchise with a 40 million budget and fills every checklist of how a studio chooses a director.

LF has no reason to cancel his project other than satisfying the needs of the toxic minority... and after TROS I am worried they might just do that.

But if you have a Rian or JJ come back, you're going to have some segment of fans that would be upset and not go see the movie. That's not something I think Lucasfilm would be thrilled with. And plus the rest of us have to deal with that being the discussion and it turning toxic again.
The toxicity in this fanbase isn't going to magically go poof overnight. We'd need like a Crisis level reset to get rid of it. Now I do think that Rian is going to get to do another SW's movie, but when we don't know until they announce something.

as far as established star wars directors go, rian is at the top of the list. surely. they might also want to go for folks that haven't directed a star war before but have had success with films in the industry. i also suspect, unlike what they did for the ST, they're thinking about the bigger picture and more than one film at a time, and how they are gonna connect and follow up on each other a la the MCU (for the high republic stuff)

First time on (any of) the OT!

Huge Star Wars nerd, absolutely adore the Originals, love the Prequels like the problem children they are and it still hasn't been long enough for me to be as enthralled with the ST as I am with the rest of the franchise.

I think TFA is cool, even if a rather unimaginative rethread. TLJ is actually pretty good, but it demanded a couple of re-watches. TROS is okay at best, though I've watched it only once - my biggest gripe with it was a letdown in terms of concluding the saga, with many dubious choices that reek of corporate intervention.

As for the spin-offs, I really dig both Rogue One and Solo, I think they're both (but especially the latter) very underrated.

Saw it a sixth time in the theaters yesterday. It's a movie I enjoy more and more upon rewatches. Always catching something new from it.
Wow! I've seen it 3 times but that'll be my lot for the big screen. Cant wait to see it again in 4K at home though. I remember going to see Phantom Menace 7 times when it first released! Had a few weeks off work and a cinema pass and was overjoyed to see a new Star Wars film at the picture house despite its flaws.

On the other hand, rewatching TLJ last month made me appreciate the movie more.

I think genre fans can often be too short-sighted when it comes to directors. Patty Jenkins was great before she went into superhero filmmaking, but hadn't done anything like that before. There are so many talented PoC and female directors out there who aren't in mainstream nerd action filmmaking who just need to be given a shot.

We get caught up on these names like Villanueve, Johnson, Coogler, Waititi, Jenkins etc etc. But the point was that talented people are everywhere, not just already the people making superhero movies. These names were doing cool things before and just needed the shot at doing other cool stuff too.

Go fund the next Party Jenkins, not just hire her to do another variation on your favorite genre film.

Def agree with this. And I think her superhero stuff has been meh.

Seeing who they got for some Mando episodes gives me hope that theyre not going to stay inside the disney family when looking for new behind the camera talent.

RJ is obviously the best choice they've made and while I don't like Rogue One I thought Gareth did a great job directing it, but he got shafted with a bland script.

I've been seeing a lot of my fav directors pushing back against working in a studio/connected universe system like DC/Marvel/SW/etc so there is an image/production issue going on there too that pushes good talent away that they need to address.

Unfortunately Lucasfilm had to cut out many of Rian's future Star Wars movies because they didn't live up to the photorealism demands of leftover Carrie Fisher footage :(

Watched end of TLJ yesterday. Poe's whole arc in that movie is about getting humbled and understanding leadership. Am I the only one who expected him to be in a bigger leadership role in TROS and not off running errands with Finn and Chewie? Like he was too important to the Resistance for that?

Also, with Luke's line about the Rebellion being reborn and the war just beginning and his act sparking hope... did anyone else expect Resistance numbers to really increase? Like there would be a big shift in the power dynamics?

Also, come on man, how you do Hux like that? That last shot of him looking at Kylo like he wants to kill his ass... you just make him a spy? Come on man, Hux isn't gonna do the FO dirty like that. These guys just made whatever fucking movie they wanted. Literally did not give two shits about the movie that preceded it.

I wish we had a proper large scale plan on what's coming like Marvel, right now we know nothing and it's boring. Next celebration maybe?

Robert Meyer Burnett, a former writer/director/producer turner YouTuber, claims to have a copy of a 12/12/2016 draft of Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly's version of Episode IX. Supposedly titled Duel of the Fates with the following opening scroll:

The iron grip of the FIRST ORDER has spread to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Only a few scattered planets remain unoccupied. Traitorous acts are punishable by death.

Determined to suffocate a growing unrest, Supreme Leader KYLO REN has silenced all communication between neighboring systems.

Led by GENERAL LEIA ORGANA, the Resistance has planned a secret mission to prevent their annihilation and forge a path to freedom...

I doubt it's real (boy howdy is that title SUPER fan-fiction-y), but hoping it is if only so we can know what was in one of the other versions of Episode IX. More at the Reddit thread which includes a link to a video where he goes through it.

A lot of people in the "What would your Episode IX be" thread carried on these story crumbs and in similar ways. Seems pretty clear to me that Rian left a lot for the writers of Episode IX to build on, Abrams and Terrio just didn't build on it.

Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottm...-first-1-billion-disappointment/#66d06c71308a

But Kathleen Kennedy's leadership at Lucasfilm has yielded five movies that will gross just under $6 billion in global grosses. Inflation aside, that's more than all six Peter Jackson Middle Earth flicks. That's 35% of MCU's $17 billion 22-movie cume. That's 76% of the $7.723 billion earned by the eight Harry Potter movies. And those five moves include one super-sized smash (Force Awakens) and one huge miss (Solo), with all but Rise of Skywalker earning decent reviews and solid audience word-of-mouth. Even with all the behind-the-scenes struggles, I'd argue Rise of Skywalker is the only one that seems a victim of studio tug-of-wars.

Pretty good result.

Sure, I may not have loved TRoS but I do not get those keyboard warriors bending over backwards to try and paint it as some absolute financial disaster. The Disney/Lucasfilm/RJ/JJ/KK/Overall SW hate is strong.

The paragraph preceding this one made me flinch:

Am I shocked at how bad the J.J. Abrams-directed/Chris Terrio-directed Skywalker Saga finale turned out to be? Yes, I think at worst most of us were expecting a Batman Forever-type "course correction" but instead we skipped straight to Batman & Robin. Am I harder on the film's performance both because there are more Star Wars movies in the pipeline and because Disney, Lucasfilm and Hollywood in general damn well needs to see that you don't make a $250-$300 million franchise installment by (seemingly) listening to proverbial online trolls? God, yes.

I get not liking The Rise of Skywalker, but this seems a bit much...

Anyone have recommendations for good podcasts / youtube videos / interviews / analysis related to Star Wars? For example, I recently enjoyed Waypoint's podcast episode about Star Wars

Or for that matter, anything of the sort that talks about Rise of the Skywalker without completely hating or shitting on it?

The idea of a communications blackout is actually very interesting...but I could not see Trevorrow doing justice to such a plot point lol

I've been really enjoying Star Wars Explained on YouTube. He didn't love TRoS but he's not making "everything wrong with" videos about it.

Edit: To clarify, I don't recommend that channel because he didn't love Rise, but because I find he's got a fair and balanced perspective on all of Star Wars. He knows when things aren't for him and is very thoughtful about the content he puts out.

he also has a podcast/rss feed for his stuff!

I may need to check that out.

Speaking of podcasts, I listened to the AIAS podcast with Stig from Respawn about game development (interviewed by Ted Price). There's a great chunk in it where they talk about making Fallen Order, how the project came about and dealing with Lucasfilm. Good stuff.

Some neat ideas in there. Seems all over the place but probably better than what we got with TROS. Builds on TLJ more and has more world building

Co-sign. I love Alex and Mollie of Star Wars Explained. They love and know a crazy amount about Star Wars.

The Ringer series retrospective was very good

Yeah, Binge Mode Star Wars has been excellent. Jason's "New York Sports Radio Calls" at the end of a couple of episodes absolutely killed me.

I'm the host of a Halo podcast, my co-host and I did a 3 and a half hour "Oddball" discussion starting with Rise of Skywalker and ending with a little Fallen Order and Mando. We're fans of Rise of Skywalker.

Probably fanfic, but not bad a bad list of super vague bullet points. Wrapping around to Coruscant and Mortis is a far more effective way of capping the saga than resurrecting Palpatine. Kylo's arc seems awful, though. Even worse than TROS.

I wonder when we'll start seeing Rey Skywalker merch and get her name updated along with the new saber in Battlefront. I'm guessing it won't be until after the blu-ray release.

Mortis instantly makes me smell BS. Mortis was also part of the another completely bogus leak not long ago where someone was saying Matt Smith had been cast to play The Son. Mortis ticks so many fanboy buttons (deep lore foundation straight from George Lucas himself) that it feels like a Star Wars fan honeypot for false rumors. In reality, introducing Mortis in the final movie of a trilogy might be more out of left field than bringing back Palpatine.

Yeah I agree, especially luke inspiring literally no one sucks.

Also that "script leak" get the Luke haunting kylo thing right. How can you not include that: "See you around" ugh
