For as much as I liked the movie, the first half needed to take a damn breath. There was no room for any scene to breathe or carry the proper emotion.

I mean the issue is that a shit-ton of the film is shallow, member berries and empty fan-service. Critics don't respond well to that.

Also it suffers from some bad editing.
Star Wars movies should be fun and this was fun. I want to see all of the "meaningless" side stuff. The exploration of the different planets and seeing new creatures and characters in the first half may seem to be superfluous if you just want a tight, plot-focused film with no frills... but who goes to a Star Wars movie for that? Nothing felt as tacked on as Finn's in TLJ.

The cinematography/CGI was breathtaking. The music was nostalgic and effective. The set pieces were exciting enough. The Kylo/Ren/Palpatine meat of the plot was great and I had no idea how it was going to go exactly. Poe/Finn were mostly just used as side-dressing without much substance, but their scenes were fun!

I was honestly waiting for something to be mad about and it never came.

The fan service was certainly all over the place but I thought they did a really good job of doing obvious references mixed in with light nods with imagery and lines.

Looking through the thread I guess a few share my opinion at least.

This is by far John Williams best soundtrack this trilogy. Lots of callbacks but used interestingly and in new ways.

Just saw it and loved it. Full on loved it.

Very few parts I had issue with, mainly the pacing of the first 15 mins or so. Way too fast, no focus, just bam bam bam bam and then it feels like hitting a brick wall when they finally discover how to pace themselves.

But yeah. Best of the sequel trilogy I think.

High five me. I agree with everything you just said.

For me after the first watch:

V - VIII - IV - VII - second half of VI - IX - III - first half of VI - Solo - Rogue One - I - The Clone Wars movie - The Holiday Special - II

I've come to the conclusion that I might just like anything with the name Star Wars in it though. So I might just be a blind fanboy. That being said, I went in expecting to hate it and I didn't.

Reviews and my disinterest in the ST be damned, I'm still hyped to see this tonight. I grew up watching, reading, and playing in this universe. There's no way I'm not going to see it opening night.

I hope JJ has learned to slow the fuck down and not keep everything so quickly paced, but JJ is no doubt going to JJ.
If anything i thought the main flaw was thats its slow without much happening in parts, very different from TFA wich was too fast

I greatly enjoyed it. Yes, the pacing was rough for the first half hour but the rest worked for me. It was fan servicy, but honestly, I kinda like that for a finale.

Glad to see this movie is for the fans

Yea this is what this is kinda turning into now that I'm seeing the Crazy positive reactions from some . I don't know how people are going to discuss this because there are legitimate problems with this film but tons of people appear to not care because "fun". I'm not saying that's a bad thing I'm just saying I really honestly don't know what the discourse on the movie will be in a few years

I feel like none of the movies are natural extensions of each other.

The Last Jedi didn't flow from TFA, and this didn't flow from TLJ. Still, I enjoyed watching them all.

Of the new movies I rank..
1)The Last Jedi
2)The Force Awakens
3)Rise of Skywalker.

My rankings off the top of my head: VI, V, IV, VII, IX, VIII, Rogue One, III, Solo, Space Balls, Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure, Ewoks: The Battle For Endor, Robot Chicken Star Wars Episodes 1-3, Poop, II, That Star Wars Porn Parody, I.

Loved it. Previous film needed to spend some time setting up the Palpatine stuff, but that's what happens when there's no plan. JJ did the best he could with that first half hour setting the stakes, but it is the weakest part. Once everything gets going it's great. Rey and Ben were wonderful again. Made me cry every five minutes. Williams best score of the trilogy. Sheev was amazing as always. I'm happy.

Just got out. Overall I liked it, but the first half is JJ Abrams at his worst impulses, and the movie's second half occasionally confuses references for things fans liked in previous movies for moments of actual emotional resonance. It's better than Star Trek Into Darkness, but still feels very comparable to that movie's tone and pacing.

Strange Thought:
With all the weird retcons, fan service, zany pacing, and crazy tangents, I think this might be the sequel trilogy's equivalent to Spider-Man 3.

I don't think there's enough depth to this one to generate much discussion. I assume people will only talk about it in regards to the overall trilogy and how they relate to each other (or more specifically how they don't work together).

Kind of funny given the general theme of RoS.

Just got back. I had my issues with TLJ but I did like it overall. I generally like everything with this series. But man this movie is a mess, a bloated off the wall mess that didn't give much time for anything to breathe. Hell it didn't even have great action scenes, it's full of action but the kind of stuff you find in shallow summer movies, not a Star Wars movie.

There is so much new random shit that goes on that I was wondering if I was watching a Harry Potter movie. at least it keeps moving so it isn't boring. It has some really great moments usually fleeting as it has to get to the next insane moment.

Yeah this is the worst of the three, I don't know what was going on here. It feels like the quality dropped, like when you compare the Hobbit to LOTR.

Definitely my favourite of the new Trilogy. Minor issues with plot devices. Definitely a big middle finger to TLJ even in the dialogue. But I loved so much of this movie, especially the stuff with Palpatine.

TLJ was much better at doing a 180 from TFA than this was at doing a 180 from TLJ.

I thought this movie was a little pathetic, and a complete capitulation to the worst fans of the franchise. It had a few great ideas to accomplish what it set out to do, but failed to execute on them properly. It's also the worst crafted movie of the new trilogy, and I'm not talking about the story.

The 3D in our theatre broke, they switched it to 2D, and were giving out free movie passes.

But I didnt want my first watch to be in 2D, I love 3D. Now I gotta wait till a show tomorrow to watch it 😭

I really can't shake the feeling that this movie was a DC movie. It legitimately felt a lot like Justice League.

As a Star Wars fan, I absolutely loved this movie. It may not be the best movie of the sequel trilogy but I'm not so ready to say it's the worst either. There were times I was thinking it was actually my favourite. It is far better than the 58% it's gotten and light years ahead of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

I've known all the leaks for months, so I knew what plot points to expect. Maybe that helped with processing things. But I really like most of the major choices that this movie made. This just felt like Star Wars, it's not a perfect movie but it feels like a near perfect finale. I had tears in my eyes and cried in many scenes, even just the shot when Leia is hugging Rey, even though I've seen it many times in trailers.

I think I've seen people say they like the first half is rougher than the second but I think I actually liked the first half a little more, the main characters interact together really well and it's a lot of fun reminiscient of Indiana Jones.

Is it better than Revenge of the Sith? I think so, but its main flaws are almost identical to ROTS. The pacing is breathless, scenes could breathe more, character development is very fast.

I don't know how people are coming out of this saying it's so disrespectful to Rian Johnson. There's a lot of things here that really build on and incorporate what Rian did.

Really, really happy and satisfied with it.

I liked it. Biggest complaints are some plot cheese but no more there than any of the movies, that and the pacing was insane, but i blame that on the first 2 movies not moving things forward enough on their own.

Just gonna quote myself from the Star Wars OT.

I LOVED IT!

Look I get why some people didn't like it.

Yes the movie pretty much never stops and yes it's a non stop barrage of fan service but I do not care I loved it.

The crowd I was with seemed to really like it too so that made me happy.

I do agree it felt like JJ was trying to cram two movies into one but I still liked it.

I plan on seeing it again to get another read but as for today I really needed something to cheer me up and this was such a big help.

Once I finish rewatching the whole series I'll try to get my rankings.

In the end I get what some don't like about this but honestly I don't think it was worth some of the vitriol I've seen.

Also anyone who says this is worse then the prequels is lying through their teeth.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself and I'm pretty happy with how this saga ended.

I really enjoyed this. Exciting and fun. It gives this series' main characters proper focus and ends the saga on a satisfying note. Are there issues? Certainly. Some plot contrivances in particular feel a bit over-the-top. Still, I'd say there is far more to like than to dislike about The Rise of Skywalker.

I was gonna write a huge wall of text about this movie but you know what? It's not worth the effort so I'll keep it simple:

This movie was bad. Really bad. I disliked pretty much everything about it and whatever I thought was good had little little to no impact after all the nonsense I had to see to get there. This is by far the worst movie in the ST and one of the worst in entire franchise.

I was bashing the hell out of this from the leaks but going in with horrendous expectations I enjoyed it.
Its still stupid and an absolute mess but it finished this trilogy alright(definitely not the saga though)

Theres nothing to be said about this movie that hasn't been said but having just gotten back, this is one of the worst movie going experiences I have ever had.

Its not a good movie in and of itself. Its essentially star wars rise of the maguffin which takes up 2/3s of the story. Followed by a lifeless rehash of star wars climaxes for the last third. A lot of people have called the plot video gamey-but that is fucking insulting to video games. I'm not even one to argue that video games are a great medium for story telling but holy shit the pacing in story telling there compared to this movie isn't even comparable. Just one lifeless scene chasing something totally irrelevant to the story to the next repeated 10 or so times.

As a star wars movie, it just solidifies that the ST only existed to tear down what came before it so it could repeat all of the same plot points and adventures with the new characters, but worse. This franchise has nothing new or interesting to say or do in its universe, its creatively fucking bankrupt and designed to just milk as much money from its fans as humanly possible.

I'm one of the most ardent TLJ haters around here, but I genuinely would rather have 100 TLJ movies before ever sitting through this movie again. Not a single point in this movie was I having fun or think anything going on was interesting. This film is lucky it has the star wars brand to prop itself up to a 58% on RT.

Did not like the last 20 minutes but overall I think it's a solid star wars adventure. It feel like this was meant to be 2 movie but I glad JJ just got it over with. Want to move on to something better, like what ever Mandalorian is setting up. Or a Rian Johnson Trilogy.

Yuppp. Just got back from a free screener of this at Alamo Drafthouse. Full open bar for a few hours before the movie and free food and drink during. I have NEVER been so excited to hear "last call" in my life. Probably the longest 140 minutes I've ever hard to sit through in a cinema. Such a shame. You know it's bad when half the audience laughed at the big ending moment and someone tried to hush them only to be met with 2 times more giggles and hoots.

Movie is absolute trash. The entire film plays like a synopsis, and I swear the average line length is 5 words.

Thought it was solid and definitely the best of this trilogy. Agree with other posters that the early pacing was pretty off, but eventually it got its footing and had some nice payoffs. Portions of it felt SUPER influenced by Clone Wars and Rebels and I mean that in the best way possible.

The movie was excellent! Glad to see a lot of people here agree. :)

Still doesn't touch Return of the Jedi as being the most fun in the series, but it's close enough.

I loved TLJ and feel the same way as you about this, at least on an initial viewing. Scenes in the 1st have moved at a brisk enough pace that we got to explore a variety of places while never being on one place too long, and I really enjoyed that. Sure, maybe it didn't have a ton of exposition, but we have TLJ for exposition. This one is for cool space battles, scenery, and closure.

This might be the first trilogy that I feel gets better with each entry, at the end of the day I really, really enjoyed the time I spent with Rey and the gang.

Man, my theater had the complete opposite reaction. Lots of us stuck around afterwards and talked about how much we enjoyed it. 🤷‍♂️ Judging by the audience reaction on RT, you're experience is in the minority.

Just saw it. Shit was all over the place. Very few memorable scenes. Totally average writing.

Felt small in scale, not the last movie in this series.

And holy fuck whose decision was it to have music playing almost nonstop throughout the entire god damned movie?

Just got out from seeing. Call me crazy but I really like it.

Seems like it's a crowd pleaser. Nearly everyone at my showing was clapping and cheering at a lot of the scenes.
