Got out about an hour back. I liked it. Not as good as Last Jedi, but I liked it more than Awakens. Felt like I was watching a movie at 2x speed, though, and a quarter of the film was missing. It mostly worked as a pulpy space adventure fun for me. Not very funny, but performers did a good job. John Williams carried this movie across the finish line.
I just finished my showing and...I'm mixed on it? There's things I like, things I dislike, and honestly I'm just not sure what to think right now. This sequel trilogy has been a wild ride and I guess if anything it makes me curious to see what happens next.

This is where I too stand - sure it could have been tighter as a story and a bit more exploratory in regards what it sets up in the beginning.
But overall it felt like a Star Wars story. It felt fun. As a pulp space adventure with wizards with lazerswords should feel.
it's the most star wars movie possible. the only reason it's "divisive" is that a large portion of the star wars fan base is determined to be miserable about anything star wars related.
This is how Star Wars has always felt for me, which makes sense because Lucas originally wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie. It's never felt particurly deep (outside of certain aspects of TLJ), I'm just in for lightsaber battles, cool set pieces, space magic, and spaceships. Maybe that's why I really enjoyed this, because I got a lot of that in the sequel trilogy.
Just got out. I don't know how JJ does it, the movie tries to sell itself as this energetic and exciting yet what it does is being dull mess. Doesn't help that it move at a frantic pace, like it really just want you to take in the spectacles not the story. And good lord many of these "spectacles" felt unearned.
And that final fight is one of the least exciting shit ever. Why do you set up this big fight only to do it like THAT??? WHY?????

Is it good? Well, look. I mean... Okay, look. In a movie as, I mean, you have to understand that quantifying... with a movie like this... look. Listen. Do I recommend... Could I recommend. Look. It's like this: Is it good? I mean, it depends... look,

Ok, I just got back from seeing this. I didnt realize I had gotten real D 3d which wasn't bad at all.

Also I didnt feel Finn getting scrapped at all in this, I felt he had a great part in this film.

It was good overall. I think the pacing is a big problem, but it eventually slows down and focuses enough to deliver a relatively cathartic conclusion to the saga. It's definitely more of an over-the-top action movie than TLJ was, for better and for worse.
I'd love to see more with some of these characters - Finn, Poe and Rey all finally feel fully realized in this one.

Just got back, I uh.. well, that was something. A lot of good. A lot of bad. The bad stood out far more than the good.
However, the movie ends on a pitch perfect note, even if predictable. At least we got that.
The first half of the movie is classic SW and the trio dynamic is even better than I thought it would be.

The movie was fun. I was expecting a mess after seeing the critic reviews but it wasn't like that at all. Some misses but overall it was a good watch.
For those who have been reading the doom and gloom, and are concerned... my wife and I just got out of our showing, and both really enjoyed it. We both loved TFA, and liked TLJ quite a lot (her a bit less than me.) I'm truly surprised at just how... vitriolic the response has been. Looks like I'll continue with my "don't engage with the discourse" policy, enacted shortly after TLJ released. :)
Just got back from theater...I really enjoyed it. The blame falls on Kennedy for not creating a coherent trilogy which in turn caused the last Jedi not moving the story forward enough and JJ having to come back and move things at a breakneck speed. I enjoyed every bit of it though and I thought it was a solid send off. There were definitely some issues but overall I think this was my favorite of the final trilogy.
I thought the 3rd act was the best, the first half was an editing nightmare.
Well that ended up being a great movie, same as the other two. There were some issues with pacing, in particular the first 15 minutes are just strange and I'm not sure what kind of feeling JJ Abrams/the editors were going for sequencing and structuring things the way they did. It was mostly smooth sailing after that though.
Frankly, the first thing I thought after the initial hype from finishing the movie wore off is that I want to gather up every single dumb fool from the past two years who perpetuated and/or escalated via responding this ongoing nonsense negative discourse about a bunch of freaking Star Wars movies, put them in a room like a group of kindergarten students and tell them to stand in a corner for 10 minutes and think about what we did and what a bunch of bad boys and girls we are. Hell I include myself in this too, I can't believe I let myself care so much and get sucked into this nonsense too.
Mostly I just feel ashamed with everyone and greatly envy the masses that just went into these movies and had a great time being none the wiser to the internet being a bunch of knuckleheads.

It just moved quickly. The editing was good, the pacing was just very fast. They were pretty up front about it from the get go, and I didn't actually have much of an issue with it. There was consistency there, though I'm not necessarily a fan of that speed, but it's JJ.
Nah man. TFA is fast paced in a good way. It has well timed scene transitions and a cohesive narrative flow.
This had none of that. The editing was really bad.
I didn't have much of an issue with the actual transitions and editing. The pace was obviously too fast, but they were very clear about it from the beginning. However they were moving so quickly that you had some "teleporting" issues. But that's more pacing than editing.
Again, I'm not condoning the pacing, but I thought it was consistent and even.
If you want examples of bad editing, look at R1, where songs just literally stop during transitions.
I agree with pretty much all your points. I still really enjoyed the film.
Gave myself several hours to think on it, and the film honestly feels like the best of the three despite the pacing, edit style, and related set up issues.
TFA: Great pacing, but hits the reset button to solely retread the same beats. No care given to the things they want us to care about, and a couple of shaky scenes (Rathtars and Phasma capture) make it a mere decent entry.
TLJ: Stronger writing in the central plot and great ideas. The execution of the B plots and the humor attempts in the first half mar the film, but ultimately IMO it stood up with the former strengths and paving its own path.
So with TROS, again, the pacing and set up is a bit weird. We jump in in the fallout of a galaxy shattering event with no build up, and are now teleporting from scene to scene to fit probably two films worth of development and world building into 2 1/2 hours.
Yet despite that...somehow it works. The character arcs are effective. Everyone has their time to shine out of the main cast. The reused footage of Carrie is incorporated eerily well, and they gave the character more than I imagined would be possible. Even with the pacing jumping from scene to scene, the transitions make enough sense to just work.
It didn't fit everything I would want out of what they were attempting and they really could have broken up the film into two to better explore these characters, but respect for delivering what they did in the circumstances that were set upon them for one film amid the loss of a beloved actor that was a vital component to the story they wanted to tell.

I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like I'm going to need to see this at least twice to completely soak it all in before giving it proper judgment.

Iiiiiii really liked it, actually, and I was prepared to hate it after the leaks. For reference, I think TFA is kinda bad, and TLJ is okay but has a lot of problems. Which by default makes ROS my favorite of the new trilogy???
It definitely had some dumb stuff, and some moments that I didn't think were earned, but it was just tons of fun, and had a lot of heart. Turns out, that was good enough for me!

It's genuinely interesting to me how differently our crowds behaved. Mine was fully invested in the film pretty much the whole way through and the laughter was — almost — always with the film rather than at it.
Maybe ask the mods and have them merge the other spoiler thread with this one?
I'll add that, of the three, this one does show the evidence of cuts/changes the most.
Same in my showing. The only parts that had people laughing at or groaning (amid contested cheers) was the last moment with Ben and Rey and hearing Hayden Christianson's voice.
