It's wild how much Steam has grown over the years. It puts into perspective how impressive Skyrim and GTA V's old records for single-player games actually were for their times (it was ~290k concurrent players for Skyrim in 2011 and ~360k for GTA V in 2014). I thought Cyberpunk's 1M concurrent players was impressive, but Steam has 5 times more concurrent players now than it did back in 2011, so it doesn't look as amazingly impressive anymore.

That's not the total of active users, only the peak.

Steam has over 95 million monthly users as of 2019, might be closer to 100 by now.

Steam also passed one billion total accounts some time ago. So, ballpark, maybe 10% of total accounts are active, and of those, only a quarter are even logged in at any given moment. A good poll here might be "if you're on Steam, do you run Steam at launch?" I'd assume the number would be much higher than 25% given we're an enthusiast forum, but we may be lower.

For instance, I have pretty much every launcher installed, but only Steam gets the startup treatment.

This is probably people's aunts and fathers who installed it once and then forgot about it but still have it boot up in the background every time Windows starts.

and then remember it again a few years later and turn into gamers who like to play games on Steam like everyone else
