How does it get added to the store?

ABOUT THIS GAME
Control the choices of a menacing serial killer rapist during a zombie apocalypse. Verbally harass, kill, and rape women as you choose to progress the story.

It's a dangerous world with no laws. The zombies enjoy eating the flesh off warm humans and brutally raping them but you are the most dangerous rapist in town.

Rape Day is a choice driven visual novel. It does not include grinding or any other time wasting activities. So skip the foreplay and enjoy your Rape Day; you deserve it.

RAPE DAY - THE VISUAL NOVEL GAME CONTAINS:
  • More than 500 images
  • Over 7 thousand Words
  • Evil Choices
Originally I had the zombie character holding a baby, because I thought it would be interesting, and I've seen this in other zombie stories. However, this presented a bit of a problem, because it is illegal to render a underage character in the presence of anything with sex or that is sexual. For this reason, the baby had to be removed before anything sexual could happen.

Realistically, it's not exactly just going to crawl away... so in the first draft of the story I was going to have the main character punt it out of the scene, but I'm not really sure how far you can kick a baby, so I settled on him running really far away and then drowning it and then coming back. To be extra safe I have him mash it up into pulp so it's not really even a baby anymore. This however is not shown only described. I don't particularly like blood, gore, bruising, scratches, etc. so none of this is shown in the game.

And then there's the comments on the post...

Well, not anything, things like pedophilia definitely cannot be depicted even in fiction if I am not wrong.

In America? Depends on what state you live in. I believe on a federal level restricting basically anything in fiction is considered unconstitutional unless it's a VERY specific type of incitement (and even that I'm not sure on), so it defers to state legislature, many of which it's a legal grey area because of the mess that is obscenity laws and how subjective the Miller test is. Where Steam is headquartered, it's 100% legal IIRC.

Well that's a fucking shame.
And yes, the game deserves to be reported and deplatformed regardless

Unless the book contents relates to real life events, the subject of pedophilia isn't taboo in fiction. It is very much legal to own books with it, and you only need to look at the book "It" with the infamous sewer scene.

Did the developer make a post yet about how we're literally Nazis for being offended?

I'm certainly not arguing for this game. Or a game like Serbian Film. I personally find no value in the sort of media, but some do. I was just curious if those who find value in films like Serbian Film think interactive media is too far or just as valid for that sort of expression as film.

I mean I'd honestly be interested in seeing it done well. I go back and forth on seeing value in something like Serbian Film, so I'm not against transgressive media at all.

But I do think that being interactive changes the dynamic a lot, and because of that it's harder to lock down just what "done well" would mean in a case like this. Especially with the technology we have now, making Custer's Revenge seem like a curious quaint bit of history more than the massive controversy it once was.

The job is made, the game has a lot of articles, he can now sell the game on his own web without steam... I don´t really see why write articles about this kind of games the only thing they do is make the game more popular or at least that`s what I think.

But you can't reasonable consider banning rape in fiction without banning murder and torture. Murder has been normalized in fiction, while rape has yet to be normalized.

This guy sounds like a serial killer himself.

Rape is more offensive than murder because murder victims aren't able to watch entertainment that exploits their trauma. And rape is far, far more prevalent in our society. Most people generally know that murder gets you a prison sentence, while rapists are often given leniency.

People like this act like DOOM and some theoretical Lynching Simulator 2019 are functionally equivalent games and deeply miss the point of how a larger social context shapes our reaction to violence (not that a horde of violent video games contextualize their violence in problematic ways but... the industry isn't as much of an arm of the US military recruitment industry as it used to be and it's definitely a discussion for another thread anyway)

It's the only way to get Valve to do anything about it, unfortunately.

This one is ridiculous, but it's definitely not the only game with rape depictions. Pretty sure Naked Butlers has a lot of rape.
This title is not suitable for players under the age of 18 or those who may be sensitive to fictional depictions of the following: workplace sexual harassment, stalking, physical and mental abuse, accidental death, murder, cannibalism, consumption of bodily fluids, and graphic sexual scenes of both a consensual and non-consensual nature between one or more adults featuring unprotected sex, group sex, food, violence, bodily fluids, bondage, domination, erotic asphyxiation, drowning, pet play, beastiality, foreign object insertion, double penetration, fictional drugs, exhibitionism, and crossdressing.
Steam will probably ban adult games again. Just not worth it, because unlike say porn or literature these contents are not seen as acceptable.

Opinions are gonna differ on this and I can kind of see both sides. But, the fact that this "game" has been listed for almost three weeks and people are just noticing now should show you how visible this crap actually is on Steam.

In my experience every VN that uses Daz3D assets for pre-rendered CG and just pops them into Renpy is always terribly made and awful. There are a bunch of people that legitimately think what they're making is good though, so it might not be a troll game, just really really awful.

Don't know why people are signal boosting this garbage.

This title is maybe not as far out of line from other recent stuff going up on Stream behind the age gate as people might think. I was somewhat surprised that the PCGamer article didn't delve into how this relates to other content going up on the service. If this does not get approved for sale on Steam I think it would have more to do with the flagrant title, product description, and marketing.

Naked Butlers, for example, just went up on Steam and features extremely explicit content. As an otome/yaoi game it's more likely to go unnoticed, but Valve has clearly turned a corner on allowing X-rated content. Whether that changes again is another question.

I checked and there's no rule it would fall under... 🤔 What category did you pick?

RAPE_DAY_on_Steam.png

Interesting, I guess this doesn't break any set rules. I wonder how Valve will proceed.

Will people boycott if this stays and how? My guess is that it's gone within the week, but if not this would be 10x more interesting than the THQ shenanigans.

How this game is more outrageous than, for example, GTA where you can do mass killing at will?

Here's a thought.

Instead of using the current headline, why couldn't the reporters use headlines like these:

"Steam listing a problematic game called Rape Day, and here's how to report it"

Instead, the article double down on attacking Steam and use this kind of sub-headline:

"Visual novel glorifying sexual assault is a major challenge to Valve's anything-goes policies."

I mean, sure, Valve is at fault here, but how about the solution? They don't even mention anything about reporting the game. They simply want to attack Steam and that's it. With this kind of article(s), all the game will get is more publicity. People who are into this kind of game will be informed and support the devs.

And reported.

Damnit Valve, this is why opening the floodgates was a bad idea. Gross stuff like this appears on their store.

Using over seven thousand words as a video game bullet point is the equivalent of telling people how old you are with "I'm twenty and three quarters."

This ain't it chief.

There are games that depict rape, but in this rape is the point. They aren't equivalent.

GTA is a bad example. But Hatred (currently on steam) is.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/341940/Hatred/

As it's a game about killing innocent people as far as I can tell, which is ABOUT murder. This rape game being up is gonna open some real conversations people might not wanna have. Maybe both shouldn't be allowed on steam but valve is gonna have to make a statement about this soon.

Nah. Valve isn't gonna say anything. I wouldn't really expect them to either. The store page is just gonna get taken down.

Murder is a relatively outlandish experience. Society as a whole also condemns murder extensively, there's no precedent of people condoning/ignoring daylight murder. In GTA, it isn't really realistic, either.

And at the end of the day it can still be argued that its slapdash violence might be harmful (in terms of how it changed/reinforced the status quo of the industry, how it influences all the 10 year old boys playing the game, etc.).

When a game like Hatred comes out that's more realistic in terms of violence and murder, it still disturbs people.

Sexual assault is...different from murder.
1. It's far more pervasive.
2. Millions (the majority?) of people don't really understand what constitutes sexual assault. This contributes greatly to difference #1.
3. Sexual assault is far more difficult to investigate and prosecute.
4. Connected to #3, a lot more people are living with the consequences and hurt caused directly by sexual violence today. Shit like this being widely available is harmful to them.
5. It's harder to divorce the depiction of sexual assault from real life cases of sexual assault. Shit like this is created and distributed for sick fucks to get off to. People don't get off to video game murder, or use video game murder to emulate feelings they might get from actual murder. In the vast majority of cases, the thing being killed in a video game doesn't really show pain. Shit like this depicts the pain of sexual assault (to a degree) and makes that the focal point in its presentation, fetishizing it.

Yuck.

Also how gross and obscenely uncreative do you have to be to make a game like this and then title it "Rape Day"?

fucking junk.

I know Valve makes billions, but it's probably too expensive to check all the titles for words like "rape." It'd be cool if there was an automated way to do that. Maybe someday.

Look, I promise you that although it does it with a wink, what happens in Naked Butler is worse than anything this stupid troll game has in it.

By Valve's current set of rules, this "technically" doesn't break any of them. The argument could be made about their unlisted rule about the game being a troll game or low effort, if that ends up actually being the case.
