The reaction to this is fucking stupid.

Whatever this is, it's clearly trying to get a rise out of people and sell itself through shock value, and so far it's working.

I'm more disappointed that a game this low quality can get this much attention rather than what kind of content is in it. All this attention will just lead to more low quality shock value games trying to sell itself through controversy, like "Baby Kicking Simulator" or "Animal Abuse Simulator".

I don't count visual novels as games, so that alone should disqualify it from Steam.

Nevermind the terribly insensitive subject matter.

I clicked on the EG article and comments had stuff like "yeah what about violence .." which just made me sad.

Get rid of this shit. This looks like those adds that run on pirate bay.

ffs.

Stop reviewing and just boot it. You know you can't make a precedent for this jerk off genre to be on the store.

That's the problem. "Games" like this are clearly trying to gain attention and the media (and this forum) are giving them all they could ever want. There comes a time when you need to step back and look at things from a pragmatic standpoint instead of a moral high ground. There are plenty of highly offensive games on Steam. You just don't know they exist because they don't get any exposure. The best thing you can do in situations like this is to just ignore them. No exposure = no sales. No sales = back to the drawing board.

You... know there's a lot of visual novels on Steam, right? It's pretty much the biggest reason the genre has a western presence at all and has been doing wonders for it.

I know, I just don't really see them as games, I wasn't being completely serious.
Steam tried to sell movies as well, but that failed.

Sounds like the kind of rubbish one of those "edgy" tossers puts out in order to "trigger" people, but in actuality has little to no value as a game, whether artistically or as entertainment.

lmao

even if you really think this, steam sells non-gaming software and movies and tv shows

Pretty sure they shut down their video section.

And yes, I really think visual novels aren't videogames. The name kind of gives them away.

In any case, I tried to make a joke, emulating some of the stuff I've seen in regards to this news story.

Well mission accomplished, seriously this "game" is so low effort it's practically impossible for it to be anything else then outrage bait, steam seriously needs systems in place to prevent scams like this i mean even the fact that the devs can list their "game" with the name Rape Day without anyone at valve noticing is baffling to me.

I am starting to thing Steam is using boys to add games at this point because this is quite unreal. What the fuck is going on there?

"Made by a sociopath for sociopaths!" is the new "made for gamers by gamers".
Or maybe it's straight up the same thing.

The fact these things have to be flagged by the media in order for Valve to act is a damning indictment. They need to sort curation and lower their cut to get with 2019. It's not 2005 any more.

Seem like a very low quality Ren'Py Daz3D game where they didn't even take the time to properly render the scenes.

Wonder if they think the game will stay on steam or just wanted the publicity before going patreon or equivalent like most of those games usually do.

I mean the title of the game alone should've triggered an automated filter list... Like how on earth was this crap even able to get on Steam with a title like that?

Reported it, but with Valve's track record I expect fuck all will be done. Very sad that this is what they've become.

You usually kill enemies in combat, not innocent people for the fun of it. GTA does get a completely free pass for this which I always found weird but that's another topic.

The more fitting comparison here would be that Hatred game or Postal and that form of violence is definitely not normalized.

First of all i think that this game is bad and will do only harm, i obviously not going to buy it and i am hoping that nobody i know will buy it.

I haven't followed the topic but my opinion is that the state must regulate those things and not stores.
I mean, in many countries many games are banned for different reasons.

So, if this game is somehow aproved and have the right to release, why are we against steam and not against the law who let it exist in the first place?

This "game" isn't released yet. Valve checks new games when they release, not when the store page is created. Although this game proves that Valve should check store pages as well.

Can't have Stick Shift or Cobra Club, but rape is a-ok!

Fucking hell. The cishets at steam are absolute trash.

Edit: Oh yeah, can't forget the necrophilia. Or else this two-bit Bundy wannabe wouldn't be able to get it up.

Yeah...

That's beyond insane. Idk why anyone would want to play a game of this nature... it's sick. Reminds me of that game Hatred way back about a mass shooter. It's controversial for the sake of being controversial.

This is the type of game that should not exist whatsoever. I'm all for freedom of expression, but there's a line that should not be crossed, and this game is about 100 miles past that line.

Also, why rape? If the developers wanted to make a pervy game about a guy that sleeps with a lot of women, why not make it consensual? I don't get this at all...

EDIT - Come to think of it, developers probably go this route because they're not talented enough to garner attention with a legitimate game. If you can't reel people in with good gameplay or story, make something super controversial to garner attention. That's the only thing I can think of as to why someone would make a game like this. Not excusing the team at all, btw.

No, the best thing you can do is report them.

Not being on Steam = No sales.

19 days according to SteamDB. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Valve doesn't check titles / store pages until release. This "game" was never gonna make it onto the store.

This seems like this "game" is still under review and was not actually for sale:

This one is ridiculous, but it's definitely not the only game with rape depictions. Pretty sure Naked Butlers has a lot of rape.

Steam will probably ban adult games again. Just not worth it, because unlike say porn or literature these contents are not seen as acceptable.
Hadaka Shitsuji is a (good) porn game though.

I love how he tries to defend it by saying that "Murder has been normalised in videogames" when that clearly isn't the case, normally, not always, but normally, you have a clear reason to kill NPCs in video games.

What justification is there ever for raping someone? Why should that ever be normalised?

He just sounds like someone who is trying to stir controversy so people will pay attention to his terrible product.

I think starving him of attention and reporting it to valve is the best way to deal with this, he clearly needs to talk to someone if he thinks behaviour like this is ok.

And reported.
Sucks that some assholes will always abuse the system. But as for now, the game isn't released yet. Devs are free to set up their store page before being checked. But I guess maybe it's time to remove that from devs ?

My biggest complaint about steam is the lack of curation and moderation when it comes to new games. It's too much of a wild west.

I would venture a guess to say this developer knows the game won't be approved but that's not the point. If he truly wanted this to skate by he wouldn't have been so blatantly in-your-face with his agenda. My suspicion is his goal was to be as outlandish as possible, get people talking and get publicity. Several large gaming sites already have stories on this. As he is doing nothing illegal, he can not be punished. With said publicity he can direct the minority who are interested in his perverse title, because there will be many who otherwise would never have known about it, to his website/whatever he's trying to promote to buy it or other things directly from him.

As long as you can purchase "A Serbian Film" on Amazon, you should be able to purchase "Rape Day" on Steam. You wanna games being seen as art, you have to accept that such crap-games coexist with the fluffy unicorn stuff that everyone else like.

Nothing can be done about this game existing or not existing, people are still free to make whatever art they please.

It doesn't meant we have to give up and say 'yeah this is fine' for content platforms which take our money. Nobody has an unassailable right to release depraved garbage on Steam or any other storefront.
