So far, the Unsupported are VR games and Persona 4. Really wonder if they will be able to fix Persona 4, but if the issue is Persona using windows only decoders, that might be too much work for me to trust Atlus to do.

For everyone talking about P4G, it isn't supported by the default proton that valve ships, and it's by default.
It seems it uses some non-free codecs on the game and valve doesn't want to support it, but there are forks of proton that will work, like proton-ge.

As in video decoders? Looking at proton db this seems like it will be an issue with a lot of Japanese pc ports.

This doesn't mean you can't play Persona 4 on the Deck by the way, this means that you'll have to download a custom version of Proton and maybe use launch options (or some other fiddling). This is the case for desktop Linux and I'd be surprised if Steam Deck was any different.

Pretty much this. Proton-GE has support for quite a lot more games than regular Proton. Some games rely on video codecs / windows media foundation that Valve can't support because of patents. Installing Proton-GE will be a case of dragging and dropping files and selecting the correct runner in Steam. Valve is / was working on a solution by transcoding video files but I am not sure if that is ever going to be released.

I fear for everyone just expecting a "handheld console" out of the Steam Deck that plays every game on Steam.

This might be the Decks biggest hurdle and might backfire.

But I hope people do some basic research before spending 400-700$ on a device.
of course, they won't

I don't want to mess with my Deck too much, so I hope there is a chance Golden will be supported in the future.

No Yakuza listed... yet. I get an awful feeling I'll crack and buy one when/if Yakuza is playable on this thing. More portable Yakuza? My only weakness...

P4G unsupported?! Huh.
It's the one unsupported game that specifies that Valve is working on it. Given that the issue is known (use of Windows codecs for its videos) and the solution is known (re-encode the videos), there's a decent chance a solution would be put into place.

Failing that, there's always the Glorious Eggroll edition of Proton, which I believe ships with aforementioned Windows codecs (because Microsoft is less likely to sue one dude than Valve for patent infringement).

This is just the first batch so unless a game is listed as unsupported there is always a chance that it'll come as verified in another batch.
Oh for sure. Im just trying to stave off the temptation to buy one of these things for now. Portable console Yakuza games would consume my entire existence!

God list to start with. Bummer about P4G, it was going to be the first game I'd fire up when I get my Steam Deck, lol :/

I actually thought that P4G was already confirmed working...

Only 28,239,229 more to go!

Edit: Damn, like half of that list is From Software / Dark Souls, lol (slight exaggeration, don't jump on me!)

They definitely gave that impression at the beginning.

e. g. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021...-will-run-the-entire-steam-library-at-30-fps/

Steam Deck can handle entire Steam library claims Valve

Valve is yet to discover a game the Steam Deck can't play
Being realistic about PC gaming in general there's always gonna be one or two oddballs that don't behave as expected. This should come as no surprise to anybody.

The more charitable read on that would be that this line of questioning was around the hardware capabilities of the Deck, rather than whether the entirety of the library is compatible via Proton.

For the record, I didn't believe that back then, but they gave the impression imo

And 5 unsupported from 67 doesn't sound like 'a few oddballs'.

I always thought they were making the messaging sound way too optimistic when anybody who's ever played on PC for extended periods of time or tried Proton knows that your mileage can vary by a lot on a title to title basis

I would trust the Verified list and that's about it. I've had issues with even "Gold" rated titles in ProtonDB

While not much to worry about atm seeing most are VR, this is making me wonder if opting for Linux is the right choice for this. I'd say one of PCs biggest strengths is essentially the library it has access to and getting increasingly concerned whether it will all be playable using linux/proton.
That and how will playing games from other launchers work and being locked out of gamepass games essentially.
Feels like SteamOS will be the best way to operate the deck, but will it have all the compatibility of windows? (And I wonder with windows whether using that would hurt performance comparatively to SteamOS)

4 are VR games, and Valve specifically clarified they would mark all VR games as "unsupported" even though you can rig it to work.

P4G being "unsupported" is likely to be solved once they resolve the audio/video issues. This is entirely what should be expected from Proton compatibility - most things work, anything that doesn't work is likely to be solved or will not be solved until the specific anti-cheat method is compatible / greenlit for proton. It's going to be a constantly rolling venture for Valve as it has been since they began the funding these efforts in 2016

I think people expecting this to be a console are actually more likely to accept it won't play 100% of all steam games. The compatible games will make for a far better launch window than most consoles even the ones with good BC.

People expecting this to be a handheld PC are way more likely to expect this to play 100% of steam games.
