I Honestly think a lot of people don't understand what Rebecca Sugar is trying to do with her characters.
To me the entire series. Was sold on a single song.
And it isn't the one most fans focus on.
It's these lyrics. In 55 seconds.
"I don't need you to respect me,
I respect me,
I don't need you to love me,
I love me,
But want you to know,
You can know me,
If you change your mind.
If you change your mind.
If you change your mind.
Change your mind"
It's the only song in the Steven Universe catalog that I always cry to. I love "Made of Love". I adore "True Kind of Love". I mediate to "Here comes a thought"
The continuity freak adores "Love Like You"
But no song hits me as hard as "Change Your Mind"
I'm going to be 40 years old this year. And no song as perfectly expressed my own Journey in my sexuality, my gender, my everything.
And while Rebecca Sugar sings it well, Zach nails it out of the park for me.
The whole series, everything about it can be understood in that song. And the wonderful lesson it teaches to children who watch the song.
That you don't need to fit in, you don't need to be normal. No bulky or absentia teacher can ruin you.
You stand as yourself, and those who hate you don't matter. And yet, they can still be your friend, if they can change as well.
