They're not going to be as important as the core 4, but they never will be, so I'd make your peace with that.
Never.gif I need Lapidot and I need it now. Plus Sugar and crew gave been mishandling Lapis for years! I wish Sugar didn't have such a complex about her brother so Steven wouldn't always be in the spotlight.

the way the story is told he pretty much has to be, it's always been told from the point of view of a camera fixed on Steven/Steven Fusions/Projections

They need to change the structure of the show. The end of last season finished his story unless Sugar's brother complex has her cooking up another 5 year arc for Steven.

Bit shitty to dismiss the entire concept of the show and the creative vision as a "complex" on behalf of the creator, really.

Its not at all uncommon for authors to base characters on their close friends and family

I don't mean to imply that she is "into" her brother, but she named the show/main character after him plus the ending theme has her putting him on a pedestal while putting herself down. I can appreciate an artist being self-indulgent since they all are, but it doesn't always make for good art. Also I have to keep in mind that she isn't the doing everything herself since there is a team of storyboard artists/writers doing the brunt of the work. At the end of the day, I'm just frustrated that Sugar uses Lapis as a conduit/stand-in for her own traumas and then neglects the character over many seasons, despite having introduced her in the first season.

They don't need to change the structure of the show, it's fine the way it is. Steven's the viewpoint character, that means some things will happen of screen and sometimes that means missing things I would have liked to see but so what? It was Rebecca's choice to tell the story this way. And you not getting as much Lapis as you wanted doesn't mean the show mishandled or neglected her, for the longest time she was a tertiary character at best because she intentionally kept her distance because of her trauma, that was a believable portrayal of such a character. Of course they could have done more with Lapis if the show was about her but it's not.

Nah. The show has issues precisely because Steven has to be the focal point. I harp on about Lapis but she isn't the only character that has been neglected, Pearl's character arc still hasn't finished and kind of stalled back in twenty fucking sixteen. Hell, look at how Sadie and Lars have been handled over the years.

Like... I know you are right.
but I'm hard pressed to think of a popular cartoon that had a time skip before it :P
Batman The Animated series skipped a few years when it introduced Tim Drake and made Dick Grayson Nightwing, then it skipped decades when Batman Beyond started.
Young Justice season 2 was set about five years later and season 3 has another timeskip.

is Batman beyond actually in the same cannon universe I thought it was completely alt universe?
and Young Justice is indeed a fine example (though well after Dragon Ball)

Transformers. Movie has a time skip of 20 years which sticks in the third season.
These seems like a good example though.

Yeah, it's officially a 2-year time skip according to this video:

The rest is just neck talk.

Looking forward to seeing what's and who's changed in the movie and the sequel series that will probably be announced via commercial after the movie finishes.

Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato had a many-months timeskip in its initial story, after being very very tight with the timeline before that. 1970s.

It's the same universe. They actually did a crossover in Justice League with Batman Beyond and Static Shock

Fan artists shifting into overdrive mode when new info comes out is always a delight.

There's an episode of Justice League Unlimited that basically serves as the series finale for Batman Beyond. It's literally called "Epilogue."
"we injected your dad with Batman so his sperm was Batman, ensuring new Batman after Bruce wad too old to be Batman"

There's also the time travel episode but the events of that one aren't fully canon anymore, especially because I'm pretty sure Terry died

I was hoping they'd time skip to him being 18 but I'll settle for two years. More interested in what Connie and everyone else has been up to, naturally. I found out an online friend of my mind has (possibly now outdated) insider information on some future plans for the show but they won't say anything concrete. :< Also a few pretty dysfunctional people work(ed) on the show apparently.

Nice.

And its interesting to see how much he has changed in that 2 years compared to years before where he hardly changed .

I guess he finally feels he's older and that is now being represented.

Considering what had transpired in the previous season, it's only rational that Steven had done a lot of maturing during that time and came to the conclusion that he needs to play a less passive role with the team.

I subscribe to something a little bit more primal:

Steven is aging because of Connie. Until her, his only true barometers were the gems and his dad.
