It seems Atlanta and the metro area have a big problem with street races:
" A total of 75 adults were arrested and charged with loitering or prowling, with some being charged with possession of a firearm under 18, police said. Also, 27 juveniles were arrested and their parents were charged with curfew violations. The names of those charged were not released.
The Atlanta Police Department has been fighting street racing for much of the past year, but it has also spread into the suburbs. Last week, Gwinnett police said that county has also seen an uptick in racing. The department said it conducted traffic stops for street racing on more than 300 drivers during a recent weekend. "

Is this a problem where you live? I grew up in a smaller town in Brunswick, GA. We would go out in the country side to race on dirt roads. I did race my old car into a drainage ditch once. It cost $50 bucks to have the tow truck pull it out after no luck with pickups trying to pull it out.
I can't imagine trying to race in a metro area-too dangerous.

Today I learned prowling is a crime.

I've seen crowds like this in other places. Basically a night time car gathering where people start getting stupid. Definitely not safe to have cars racing close to people so I'm okay with busts.

There are drag strips everywhere just go there instead.

VICE News has had some really interesting mini docs over the past few years about the street racing scenes in various cities. Watching those I do sympathize with the street racers -- they talk about the community, how it keeps them away from bad shit, etc. ...but then I remember that it's extremely dangerous and they're putting innocent bystanders at risk.

In one of those docs someone they interviewed said if the city had a sanctioned racing track then most of the community would move there instead, and that got me thinking. Maybe that's a better solution.

There are tons of race tracks out there, they're just not in the bounds of cities for noise and safety.

Has... has anyone been killed or even hurt in these street races? The fact the article makes it a big deal that they seized "four weapons" and "less than an ounce" of weed leads me to believe no.

Also over 100 people being charged with "loitering", "prowling" and/or "violating curfew" is a fucking joke. Literally being arrested for doing nothing.

Also also, this means literally nothing:

The department said it conducted traffic stops for street racing on more than 300 drivers during a recent weekend.
Same shit happens all the time to my dad for having the audacity to drive a Mustang with a body kit. This is just cops harassing people trying to get around the city, nothing to be proud of or brag about.

Must be a new Fast and Furious coming out. No this isn't a problem where I live, I legit thought street racing died out for the most part years ago.

Yes people going at really high speeds for thrills in places not designed for it has caused numerous deaths. I googled and found examples of several in about 30 seconds.

I know a few of them got busted up on 285 and around the downtown connector last year. They also woke up a bunch of people in my neighborhood a couple of months ago tearing up and down the street around 3AM. Fuck ‘em.

Imagine that you live near by and are just trying to sleep so that you can go to work the next morning. I'm not a fan.

I’ve noticed a lot of news articles coming out of the Bay Area about street racing and sideshows, saw one recently where cops broke one up and impounded a bunch of vehicles.

there’s a very mainstream show, Street Outlaws on Discovery, that is all about illegal and impromptu street racing, curious how influential the show is. A new episode airs tonight and it’s supposed to feature one of its big racers wrecking/totaling his car(this race happened last year).

There's always a few people who end up killing others a couple times a year

I don't get street racing, just go to a strip or a track or something. I get that there's a need for community and all that, but someone just ends up getting killed every so often. It's a big problem in my city(Houston).
A good amount of folks who street race don't have the financial means or access to go to tracks. Plus, the appeal is the community aspect, and also late nights--most tracks close at night.

I've known quite a few folks that street race.

Not defending it btw. Just explaining it so we can think of broader solutions.

Super tired of street racers. A bunch of them gather at a parking lot near by and rev their annoying lawn mower engines after 10pm. Then they go racing up and down the roads and keep people up at night. I fuckin hate em.

Just a couple weeks ago hundreds of them shut down a major highway in Denver.

I don't care if it's an outlet for them. Plenty of people have mental outlets that don't inconvenience or put others in danger. Street racing is a shitty hobby.

In Germany we get a headline about people getting killed in a street race (usually pedestrians or uninvolved drivers getting hit by crashing racers) every few weeks.
Oh for sure I don't doubt people have died because of street racing, I'm more curious about in this specific area (particularly organized street races, not impromptu "two random people on the road decide to race each other" deaths). Because it is all community run, safety and precautions taken are going to vary from place to place. I have no idea what the Atlanta scene looks like.

I like car culture and muscle cars more than a lot of people on this forum, have always loved Mustangs and currently own two of them, but I’ve never been big on street racing. Even just driving during the middle of the day going to or from work or running errands I sometimes come across someone that wants to race me, and I’m just like nah Paul Walker I’ll let you get in trouble I don’t need that. Just seems really stupid.

when I want to screw around with my car(s) I do I out on open roads where there’s no one around(there’s plenty of those around here). I like having my Mustang for my personal enjoyment, not to try and prove I’m better than someone else on some suburban street.

Fuck street racers.

Your community-building ends where it concerns other people’s safety. Because nothing says “community building” like killing innocent bystanders.

Some kid just died a few days ago from racing in Boston. His girlfriend passenger lived. Shame. I don’t like the idea but death is the risk.

They’re free to put their own lives at risk if they wish; it’s the other innocent people that they endanger that’s the issue.

I’ve known people who were killed by these selfish pricks.

A night at a drag strip is not expensive at all, especially if you're actively working on your car. Cities should still budget a little to help out though and hold open nights to draw them in.

There is plenty of community at a track as well, always people showing off and shooting the shit in the staging area.

Here in Houston there have been people who will shut down entire intersections or parts kf the freeway so they can film each other doing donuts on the freeway itself.

A month or two ago some couple in their car got shot at for trying to get through one of these intersections.

There are people that get together to race along stretches of highway late at night all the time. I know people who do so along 99 and the 290 feeder right by my apartment.
