Ive always been interested in this but I remember hearing that the PS4 version had major issues. Did those ever get fixed?

I had a lot of fun with the game, 55 hours in total.

It's already a good package as it is but they are of course numerous factors which could be improved.

The number 1 issue of the game is the performance, the world streaming is super bad with FPS drops and geometry pop-ups even on relatively decent PCs with an SSD.
If that could be improvement the game would already feels massively more polished for a lot of players on consoles and PC.

The other aspects are tight to more/better content.
I was already suprised that the game is handcraftet and has a decent narrative.
Initially I thought this might be just a randomly generated map with no meaningfull story behind.

Couple of things which could be improved/expanded:
- Just a bit more different bioms/wildlife and also from a game perspective force the player to explore and visit all or most of the bioms, through items or story pieces.
There are bioms and wildlife I never encountered because it wasn't necessary to go there or I was always swimming passed it.

- Tied to it is also the lack of possible endgame content.
Subnautica has a lot of features which could be improved but I feel especially the building mechanics and exploration of the whole world suffers from the structure of the game.
In the beginning you are limited in your abilities to gather resources and you spend your materials into building new tools and going further story wise, you don't invest it, at least I didn't, into building a large base or even multiple bases, although this is something I quite enjoy doing.
At the end of the game when the story is finished and you have all tools and vehicles to really collect a lot of resources and explore the map, there is simply no motivation point.

Personally I also really wished that the thirst/hunger wasn't progressing so fast.
You can play the game without it but then a couple of game mechanics/items are simply useless so I went for the survival mode.
But it's so aggressive that's it was mostly annoying in the beginning of the game.
I like to read about the story pieces, the wildlife I scanned or the objects but since your character literally dies if you don't give him a bottle of water every 10 minutes, you can't afford to casually read all the stuff.

So good. Congrats, UWE!

The world of Subnautica is so fresh. The gameplay loop wonderfully paced.

The game is in turns a peaceful Zen sandbox and a terrifying deep dive into the abyss.

Such a gorgeous space to traverse.

Can't wait for Below Zero to go 1.0.

I love the game, but I stopped playing because of absurd loading times.
On Xbox X it takes almost 10 minutes to load my savegame

So well deserved. In competition with The Witness and The Outer Wilds as best open world game this generation IMO. I wish AAA studios would play through the first half of Subnautica to learn how organically it's possible to teach and guide a player through a setting, without dragging them by the nose the entire time.

Damn man I remember asking Flayra questions about defense chambers on the Natural Selection boards, and look at him now.

After Unknown World's struggle to get Natural Selection 2 to take off, I'm really happy they've finally seen some success.

Subnautica is the best singleplayer survival experience out there. On Filmic mode, the game is both beautiful and terrifying.

Funny how this thread comes up as I'm in the middle of watching the Subnautica AGDQ speedrun.

I've been thinking of getting it myself, but I'm not sure if I can handle it. Underwater areas in games just fill me with complete dread, and I just know there are Eldritch abominations lurking in the waters below that you will have to encounter.

The thought alone is scarier than any horror game I've ever played in my entire life. :<

Had to stop playing it on PS4 due to poor performance. Same with Outer Wilds. Just can't play first person games that perform so poorly.

Well deserved, it's one of the most engaging and atmospheric games I've played in recent years. And I probably wouldn't have played the game at all if my kid didn't get me into the game so that we could play together. It is a great experience on PC, the game overall is quite unlike anything else I've played due to the underwater environments and fantastic sound design.

One of the best games of the decade and one of my all-time favorites, without a doubt. Deserved. A masterclass in how to marry level design, story, and mechanics until the experience becomes greater than their sum.

I hope against all hope that Subnautica 2 is in the cards.

It's a great game and made the brilliant decision to let you turn off the incredibly tedious food and water mechanics that turn most survival games into a slog.
