Yeah that part in the video of hammering in the "Claude" thing felt a bit silly and needlessly spicy.

It's not even a Gascoigne situation, where it was a wrong assumption/confusion around the french language (between "oing", pronounced like woolie was saying it, and "gne" which in french would just join how the characters say it). It's just a different (but correct) way of pronouncing it. Yeah the other characters say it differently in game, but it's like making fun of someone saying "Mehrio" instead of Mario.

This is truly the oddest thing in the world to throw down over. Language is all arbitrary nonsense anyway, however someone's name is pronounced in the work is how their name is pronounced. Like, it would be one thing if they were native francophones or something, but they obviously aren't - Woolie's French is basically at a grade school level - so I don't understand why the defense of "but this is how you could theoretically pronounce it if it was from a french person pronouncing their name this way in French!" even matters. It's not even an issue that he pronounces it wrong - just that they took it a step further and basically said the game is wrong for pronouncing a name in English they way everyone in an English speaking place would pronounce it.

Aside from 3rd Birthday, none of his LPs have really had the pop of his Naruto LP, and I think that's probably because those two LPs were based around seeing Woolie's reaction to things that he's heard of, but never seen. Everything else is him doing games people probably already know his feelings for (Platinum titles), playing random ass games that may/may not be interesting to the viewer, fighting games stuff with people who may as well be randos to the broader audience, Gon in 60 Seconds (which relies on Woolie's history of hating Hunter x Hunter), and podcast clips (which have him interact with Pat and typically involve interesting/evergreen topics). There's not a lot of consistency outside of the podcast clips and Gon in 60 Seconds, which makes it harder for him to build up an audience.

Also, as Pat pointed out in one of the CSB podcasts, it probably doesn't help that literally everyone who isn't Pat that shows up for an LP on WoolieVs has a thick ass accent. That's not necessarily great when you know lots of your viewers look at other tabs during the videos, since it makes following the conversation a bit harder, which can lead to disengagement. Personally, I think Reggie and Minh are great personalities to contrast with Woolie, but I can admit there are times where I have a bit of trouble following them, because they aren't enunciating things as well as Woolie is.
I felt bad thinking this but yeah...I have trouble understanding Woolie's friends in the LPs I checked out like 7th Stand User

I've also just noticed some obscure lore from that image:

Shadow The Hedgehog
Miles Tails Prower
Sonic Thumbs Up

So is Thumbs his middle name or is it a double-barrelled surname?

You know, that card of Shadow smiling is totally off-brand. Happiness is not part of his onscreen persona, and it makes me wonder who authorized such a blatant breaking of kayfabe.

Woolie having Pat as a friend actually makes going into Yakuza worse than just buying the PC releases, since Pat has far too much useless and outdated info to convey that has no relevance to newcomers that just get the games on PC or PS4. Knowing the dumb stories of how these games came over on the PS2 and PS3 is now the euqivalent of grandpa's war time stories that have gotten increasingly inaccurate. All that matters is we'll soon have the entire main line games on one system and PC seems to adhere to releasing the games in chronological,as in the actual time-line of the games, order.

My opinion feels super unfair but it's hard not to think it anyway - I respect the insistence on Woolie sticking to doing his own independent thing but at the same time this being a video done with Pat would been about 100x better in basically every way, and I can kinda say that about a lot of things Woolie does. There's a reason why their old LPs had the usual standard rule "one person is at least somewhat informed on this/has beat it, while the other one hasn't" and whenever that rule is strayed from the video usually drags or kinda just sucks. Obviously I can't place blame at any person's feet in particular since, hey, Pat is by far doing the best for himself and has a busy streaming schedule with him, Paige, and the podcast, so maybe he wouldn't have wanted to do it anyway, but I just feel like by far the best stuff the four of them have done since the breakup has been one collab or another. Even with Pat I only tend to watch him when paired with Paige.

I also saw a point mentioned elsewhere that also puzzles me - what is Woolie's strategy, for lack of a better word, with his channel, exactly? Waiting a month before playing this game at this point was a nightmare decision, it basically ensures every single person in the audience that cares has already played it and the more enthusiastic fans have had the time to blow through the game multiple times by now. There's no way this is a win if you're coming at it so uninformed with no guidance at all. I get that their brand has often been to just wing it but sometimes you really shouldn't. It really feels like Woolie's channel has struggled to get attention because of repeated examples like this. He is so, so bad with just mentally checking out if he's not 100% into something.

Like, looking back on it, Woolie's rant during the podcast about Titanfall 3 when Apex Legends was blowing up kind of shows that he's just genuinely not into chasing new things, doesn't like what most people like, and prefers to just quietly do his own thing. He's not big on change once he's in his ways and teaching him new concepts isn't very easy because he's usually not all that willing. So a video like this where he's effectively dragged into doing something on a recent popular game is sure to bomb horrifically. He's basically trying to do a channel where he gives almost no one what they want because that's not his thing.

While a Fire Emblem LP would probably have worked better with Pat, I think we can all admit a Fire Emblem LP would take forever and would be incredibly boring. It's like 50 hours and mostly a visual novel.

In general principle I do like the idea of just doing your own thing, but I'm not sure how far that's actually sustainable. Also while we're on the channel subject playing Sekiro doesn't work at all if you don't at least do one session a week. Every time a week is skipped he basically has to relearn the game.

But ...you should absolutely make fun of people who say "Mehrio" instead of Mario. That's like Homer Simpson 'nucular' level wrong.

Yeah, that's basically a solved issue, just play them on PC in order. The only real debate is if you start with 0 or play that later, and people seem to have basically settled on starting with it being the best route.

Mario literally says his "its-a-me Mario!" in around fifty games.

There's no excuse to mispronounce it.

I'm so happy Matt is doing a playthrough of this one as Until Dawn was one of the best of the SBF. Sigh, its games like this that make me really miss the Zaibatsu.

Oooof, they're using the shitty turn based combat implementation for Yakuza 7. No wonder Pat isn't into it.

Must have been on stream or something i don't follow. Pat thought this would be a neat game when April Fools showed this stuff off. Monkey Paw's wish for a joke for some people, but being an rpg will hardly effect the story. However the impact came from it's brawler combat, and there are decades of turn-based RPGs it now has to be compared to. And just starting out new can really suck if you don't check out all the QOL improvements that have happened.

My solution: Put a cooking mini-game with 3D food and also PSO2 in there and we'll have enough laughs for a while.

Anyone else noticed that the seventh mainline Yakuza game is doing a similar thing with its title to another seventh mainline entry in another series (Resident Evil 7) by having it named, "English title : Japanese title"?

It works on two levels because not only is that the case, but it's turn based because the protagonist loves Dragon Quest - the game is literally "Like A Dragon"!

S tier naming.
