I wish they had prioritized making all themes work together. Mainly because I want clear pipes and creeper vines to work with the other themes.

I really hope those blinking blocks will have a faster setting. Those were some of the most fun and difficult stages in 3D world and it would translate amazingly well to kaizo mario.

Actually I think it's the other way around. They didn't want to make new 3D Models and animations for things 3D World didn't have so they decided to just make it unique.

Some things are weird, like trampoline mushrooms being exclusive when they'd be really easy to make sprites for. The NSMB games had them.
Ah right, that makes sense too. Would be labour-intensive and it seems they already had quite a bit on their plate.

And BTW, ain't it funny that the way forward for the 3D World style... is 2D? =P Really glad the awesome soundtrack made it over, let's hope there's a lot of it there!

And the new Kondo tracks are wildly interesting as well...

Surprised nobody catch this yet. This show that the Super Famicom logo some people saw is probably a new sound effect that play Mario Circuit from Super Mario Kart. (which could be a double reference. As 3D World also had a level based on Mario Kart and played a rendition of the same music.)

I don't think that last game is Super Mario Bros 2. I think it's possibly Super Mario Odyssey. What a way to capitalize on the success of that game by bringing a 2D version into Mario Maker.

Thought I saw this mentioned somewhere here already, but I guess not. Having Mario Circuit available to play in this game through this sound effect will be very cool! Won't be that great in non-3D World themes without the car though.

I brought up the Super Famicom logo. It's cool to see what exactly it is.

No, you're simply moving the goalposts. You said that PS Plus does the same thing as this. But they don't.

No one said they offered a $100 minimum purchase on every single discounted item, only on this specific offer. Yes, you can use it on games that cost $60 at launch. Although many of the titles are older and have already been discounted for less than $50, and most people do not make $50 games purchases in pairs.

As for PS Plus discounts versus the eShop sales, I rather wish Nintendo would offer that degree of discount, where a major exclusive title like Horizon can be discounted to around $10 with all of its DLC included. Have they done anything like that with Zelda? I believe PSN had God of War for $35 recently. The degree of discount offered in PSN sales isn't remotely comparable to Nintendo's discounts, which I rightly described as meager.

As for my "bizarre" issue with this, I simply made an off-handed remark that it's funny Nintendo seems to think this is some fantastic discount and that it's a comment on how poor their discounts are compared to other platforms. I find it much more bizarre that so many people feel the need to pile in to defend Nintendo's honor on the issue of pricing because of a short comment made in passing during a quick-moving thread on a livestream

You're complaint was no one else puts a discount tied to an online membership - exactly what PS Plus discounts are.

You said there is a €100 discount paywall which is not true given there are sales all the time on the eshop + you get money back on every single digital purchase

What do you expect? Nintendo to offer 20% off every single game on the shop?

PS and Xbox certainly have deeper discounts over time on first party titles but can you get any big 1st party preorders for equivalent €50 like you do with this promotion? No.

Both platforms offer different things. You won't find first party Nintendo games for half price after a few months for obvious reasons, if you don't like it then don't buy a Nintendo system

Shit looks hella dope. The biggest surprise for me is seeing 3D World in a separate category from the others: Extra Game Styles and there was another empty space next to it which suggests to me that we're going to get at least another game style for the game whether it's hidden or DLC.

I know it's too different from other Mario games, but I want it to be Yoshi's Island.

Here's a 2 minute version of that gameplay BTW with the music:

Sorry to bring this up, but do you have a timestamp for that? I'm trying to find it myself with no success, and it would settle the current discussion on the matter.
The thread itself already has that information :P

Damn dude, I was pretty much expecting Mario Maker DX, but this completely blows MM1 out of the water; it's completely irrelevant now. So much new stuff, I was mildly excited before, but I can't wait now.

Is there any part of the old 2d marios that cannot be recreated in Super Mario Maker 2?

Any type of platforming that cannot be made? Anyone think about this?

I am glad there's a story mode because the editor looks so overwhelming that I probably won't bother a lot to make.

Also I want a 2D "3D World" game so bad.

Did you play the first game? Level creation is surprisingly easy...and fun! Super Mario Maker is the by far the most enjoyable level creation tool on the market and it's very accessible to people who don't normally like to create things, such as myself.

Some of the more scripted things seem to be hard or impossible to replicate. For example the 2nd castle in SMW with the blocks moving into and out of the screen.

I feel like I have to accomplish all my life goals before this game comes out because from then on it's just Super Mario Maker 2.

this is your irregularly scheduled spoiler-free stream link page shilling for purposes of bookmarking and whatnot

Thanks for that!

Man no clear pipes in every theme makes me so sad. Ever since I saw this romhack level i hoped we could recreate something like it with the clear pipes.
https://youtu.be/-jYGfmiGr1Y

Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well. GPB + Invictus hype!
I was also hoping we'd get clear pipes in other styles...

My takeaways from the Direct:

Good:

- Vertical levels
- Story mode
- Endless mode
- Downvoting levels (maybe that's just to prevent bad levels from showing up in other player's endless runs and I'd be totally fine with that)
- On / Off switch functionality
- Night themes are more than just different backgrounds / music
- Wide variety of win conditions
- Potential for more extra game styles down the line
- Cranes
- Boom Boom and Pom Pom
- Not a fan of MP in general but it seems fun for people who enjoy it. Could be fun to watch streamers compete against each other

Bad:

- 3D World is separate from the other styles. Yes recreating the assets in different styles is a lot of work but this is basically a new mainline Mario game with so much new content. Why draw the line here?
- Sounds like vertical levels are only available as subworlds. I guess they didn't want to implement goals for vertical levels. I would have been fine with them simply adding the goal orbs for vertical levels.
- The SMB3 forest theme seems out of place. Having skinny pipes as the ground tiles seems super weird. Also the SMW desert ground tile color doesn't really seem too deserty. I like the damaged look of the scaffolding, though.
- Still no Charging Chucks? :(

All in all there's not really all that much to complain about. There's so much potential for great levels oozing out of every pore of SMM2. I can't wait to start building!
Pre-ordered the limited edition. I'm ready to go.

My biggest bummers are the ice theme looks crap in SMB3 and the forest theme in SMB3 really isnt forest at all. I hope you csn make regular ground in that theme besides just pipes. It's my fav theme so seeing the backgrounds look so plain compared to the other themes is a bummer.

Do we know if you can remove the time limit from a stage with different course clear objectives? I'd love to make a Frontier-style level where the main level is like a mining town, and when you enter the vertical sub-level it's a deep mine you have to dig down to the bottom of, but I'd prefer people can take their time on it!

Why do people undersell 2D Mario so much? This is a lot of good stuff but it's nowhere close to being able to replicate every game. It still can't even fully replicate SMB1. Tons of stuff missing from SMB3, SMW, and NSMBU.

Interesting that they actually added Dry Bones to the 3D World style

The original only had Parabones.

Also I wonder if Fire Bro is 3D World exclusive. That'd be weird, it's an enemy in 3 and NSMBU...

What's wrong with allowing water underground? Ghost house? No sunken ghost house ship? k. :C
It doesn't even make sense in Forest. Forest isn't associated with water levels. And then the thing that IS associated with forest levels, poison, is locked to the night version of forest, which gets rid of the bloody forest! So you basically can't even have poison in forest.

That's great news for me. I'm not usually much of a builder myself but I'm still getting this. I'm relieved there's a story mode too though!

There's a whole lot of enemies they could add just from SMW:

Spinys, Sparkys, Flying Koopas, Mecha Koopa's, Charging Chuck, Thwimps, Swooper, Blaarg, Dolphins, Eeries, Ninji, Rex, Dino.

Spiky is such a big omission.

I would absolutely love it if they made a sprite for all the Smash Bros amiibos.

Just imagine being able to play as Bayonetta in this.

A man can dream.

There is still a lot missing from Super Mario Maker 2 if you want to recreate the old games. Even just playing the first few levels of Super Mario World, you're going to run into a bunch of stuff that doesn't exist in SMM2, such as several different enemy types, diagonal launch pipes, invisible blocks that unlock across the entire game at the same time, and so on. We're getting closer, but we've got a long way to go if we want to do all the things the old games did.

I feel like the biggest omission is that using a mushroom on a boo doesn't turn it into big boo in SMW. Instead it's just a scaled up boo that looks like crap. I have no idea why they didn't do that one properly.
