Super Mario Maker 2 is the sequel to Wii U's hit Super Mario Maker, allowing you to step in the creator's role and build your own Mario courses, with a myriad of objects at your disposal. Play-testing is a snap too, being able to freely swap between making and playing your levels at any time. Prefer to play other's creations? There's a whole host of user created content available to download through Course World, with multiple ways to play it!
Is this your first time trying out Mario Maker? Consider checking Yamamura's Dojo, a series of live tutorials hosted by the titular pigeon and his apprentice Nina. They teach you pretty much everything you need to know making levels, so your level won't end up getting mass-Boo'd.
Like the previous entry, you can freely swap between Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U styles. This adds elements never before seen in the original games. Want the Angry Sun in Super Mario World or Banzai Bills in Super Mario Bros.? Mix and match to your heart's content!
One of the biggest new features to the game is the addition of a new game style: Super Mario 3D World! Unlike the other four, the level editor resets when you switch to/from it, due to it offering many elements not found anywhere else. Containing Clear Pipes, Beat Blocks, Cat Mario, Piranha Creepers, Meowser, Bullies, and the brand new Koopa Car, this style truly stands out on its own!
In addition to the 6 course themes from the original games, there 4 new course themes, with their own aesthetics and music to vary things up further. Additionally, each theme has its own night version, with its own aesthetics, music, and even unique mechanics! The number of unique themes has more than tripled from the first game!
The most requested feature from the first game is here! You can use steep or gentle inclines, just drag a piece from one end to the other. They seamlessly blend in with the rest of the ground, making them great for both aesthetic and gameplay purposes!
A fan favorite of Super Mario Bros. 3, the Angry Sun chases Mario throughout the entire level. It won't rest till it gets him, so watch out! Why does the NSMBU version look like it doesn't want to be here? Who knows, but please don't make it more upset than it already is by bringing it up.
Adding basic programming to the game, you can set blue and red blocks to alternate with the press of a button, and make colored treadmills change their direction. The applications for these are nearly endless: blocks, platforms, pathways, walls, you name it!
Exclusive to the Forest theme, freely control the water level. You can set where it starts, how high it rises, if it falls after rising, and how fast it changes the tide. Enemies will even seamlessly change their physics depending on if they're in or out of water. In the Castle theme, it turns to lava!
Exclusive to the 3D World theme, this bad boy lets you drive over nearly anything at high speeds. Goombas, crates, Koopas, spike blocks; nothing can stop you! Well... don't run into walls. Your car can only take a few head-on impacts.
Based off the Super Mario Challenge in the first game's 3DS version, set special conditions that must be cleared before touching the flagpole. From collecting x amount of coins, to never jumping, to defeating 7 Chain Chomps, there's a lot more possibilities for the levels you can make.
Auto scrolling levels can be customized far more than ever before. Adjust the trajectory of the scroll and how fast it goes, with up to 10 adjustments per sub-level. Levels can be more dynamic than ever before!
Pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend and build alongside them! Each player gets their own mini item selector to build without getting in the way of others.
Watch the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct to get a small sampling of all the new features this game brings to the field (its linked in the Media section at the bottom of the OT)!
Peach's Castle has been... undone!? Play through over 100 levels made by the experts at Nintendo (and maybe even some Nintendo characters!), learning clever course design on the way. Beating levels gives you coins, which you can use to fund the rebuilding of Peach's Castle. You may also be tasked with collecting materials or rescuing builders... or maybe even healing the wound between the workers and their anti-union boss! Talk to all the characters in the hub world too, there's side jobs for Mario to perform for even more cash!
Story Mode also has some mechanics exclusive to it. Levels may force you to carry a heavy stone that restricts your jump height to the goal, or escort a little Toad to the goal without them getting hit. Having trouble with a level? Pressing the minus button at any time during the level will let you access Luigi's Parts, a host of blocks and powerups you can place into the level on the fly, giving you that boost you need to complete it!
The online component of the game. You can browse all sorts of levels made be creators from around the world, with a new tagging system to sort things like speedrun, autoscroll, and music levels. You can also look through the newest levels or those that are particularly popular. Not only can you play individual courses, but you can also test your might by playing through Endless Challenge: an endless selection of levels sorted by difficulty until you run out of lives. There's even leaderboards to compete in!
Besides playing the levels, you can also reignite your inner Miiverse artist through the comment system! Draw or write a message for other players to see either during the level, or towards the end. There's also Maker Profiles, where you can dress up your own Mii! The more people play your levels, the more parts you unlock for your Mii to wear in your Maker Profile.

Super Mario Maker 2 does nearly everything better than its already excellent predecessor, keeping the charm of a Mario game while introducing some incredible new ideas.

Nintendo has delivered a much more robust and feature-rich Mario maker, and hope players will use it well.
God is a Geek - 9/10
Despite the multiplayer being slightly underwhelming, the new creation tools, single player story, and addition of Super Mario 3D World make Super Mario Maker 2 a fantastic overall package.
Metro GameCentral - 8/10
Not just one of the most versatile 2D game creation tools on consoles but the best collection of new Super Mario courses since the 90s.
